I really like the Mares Quad but currently i don't own any dive computer lol i just have a water proof watch (330ft rated) and have pressure gauge and depth since i only dive in springs and shallow waters (max 30/50feet) so i just plan my dives using the dive tables and a chronograph watch and dive my plan,( i use EAN32)and i never had a problem or ran out of air. Before i buy a computer i will just rent different ones from different shops to see which one is more reliable and good for the money, but now i don't really need it since here in Florida max depth everywhere is 50' lol. I bought the Mares Puck Pro Plus as the first computer for my son and me (both of us novice divers). Great price for new divers buying all of their new gear. One button is both its strength (simplicity for new divers in the water) and its weakness (gets annoying navigating settings and logs). Overall, still a solid choice for the price.
P.s.: Wrist style is great for travel if you are renting BCD and regulator.
Your definitely right about the one button being both good and bad. Ease of operation until you hit it one too many times, then you have to go all the way back through it again.
Don't you find it incredibly limiting to only carry Mares?
Not knocking Mares, they make great stuff, but in some areas there are better options if you go to a different brand. That can be simple cheap options like bolt snaps, or if you want to go with a BP&W, dive computer, dive light, or TEC shorts.
I guess if you're contractually obligated to only carry Mares, there's not much choice, but every dive store I've been to carries a wide variety of brands. My LDS carries Mares, Suunto, Shearwater, Apeks, Aqualung, and Garmin dive computers. They carry Apeks, XDeep, Mares, and Hollis BCDs. Bare, Waterproof, Beuchat Apeks, and Mares wetsuits. Apeks, Mares, Aqualung, XDeep, Atomic Aquatics, and ScubaPro regulators, etc. etc. etc.
I'd hate to be limited to only one brand when walking into a dive shop, and if I am, I'm coming for something specific, and not to get advice on what to get.

Good day. Thx for the awesome videos. Need some help please. So I currently got the mares puck 3 console and love it although it is not air integrated. When diving at Florida keys now in July I decided 5o buy myself the mares smart air wrist watch computer. Now I need to ask is in the console and the watch it has a pf that can be set. It is set on 0 at the moment. What would you recommend I set it to and if you could maybe make a video explaining the pf setting. Think the pf stands for personal factor. Could be wrong. Thank you
Hello @andrelabushchagne7453, the personal factors are better considered to thought of as a conservative factor. Since both the Mares Smart Air and the Puck Console are using the RGBM algorithm, there is nothing wrong with setting them to be more conservative. That being said, I simply left my Puck Air (the integrated version of the Puck console), and my previous Mares Smart Air on P0. Hope this helps.
And over time you will end up with 5 computers :-) Mine are 5 working Suuntos. Always a D6 or D9tx on the wrist and too many transmitters too (2 x 2)
You speak the truth. I personally own one of each of these shown in the video.
I have both a console computer, and a wrist mount computer. I find myself preferring wrist mount with AI as I can easily check it even in the middle of a task and see both my decompression profile and my gas remaining.
In the proper diving position, wrist mounts are much easier to read.
Hi Brian, good video as always but since it is aimed at new divers surely question 1 is budget? Do people who are new open water divers really need to consider a $1200 computer when a $2-300 unit will be more than adequate for their initial needs?
Hey Mike, great question, but the last part of your statement is the key to everything. What is their needs? Matching budget to their needs is pretty easy to do, as most of these computer are very reasonably priced even at full retail. This is also why we carry such a wide range of computers, from high end to low end. The key to keeping dive gear cheap is you have to use it. If you spend money, a lot of money on dive gear but you never use it, then well you wasted your money. However, if you go diving and get good use out of your gear then it ends up paying for itself. Here is an example. We have full kits starting at $699. We rent gear, full set, for $85 per day. So if a diver was to rent gear instead of buying gear, after he has rented 8 times he has then spent the same amount of money as what he would have if he would have bought the $699 set. Most of our customers dive between 20-50 times in a year. So if they were to rent gear 50 times their total cost would be $4,250. For that same cost, I can completely equipped an entire family. With that being said, they could have purchase a really nice set of gear, high end we will call it, for half that price. So if their budget allowed them $4,250 to rent gear, then well it would definitely allow them $2000 to purchase their own gear. Whether a new diver actually needs a $1200 or a $200 computer is up to them. We don't determined what their needs are, they do. All we do is help them reach their goals by providing them equipment that will be necessary to reach them. I have on numerous occasions talked new divers out of big purchases, after they told me what their goals were. I take the time to explain what each computer does, how it works, and I always give them an alternative. The ultimate decision is still theirs.

Shearwater makes a great computer. Like all the others, practical for certain dives, and not practical for others.
What I don't get is why some people buy such expensive recreational computers when basicallys for litteraly 50-100 $ more you get a Perdix AI with piezo electric buttons, tons more options, is user confirurable and has a user changable AA batery.

wrist air computer can integrate to 3 tanks. Console based - only one.
But.. what is the difference between smart and quad? Size (yet same amount of data on screen) and apnea in smart? Anything else?
Size, and functionality. The buttons on the Quad become mirrored buttons in dive mode. This means no matter which arm you wear it on, you never have to reach over your arm to operate the screens.

Shearwater makes great computers as well Michael Smart. Several of our divers use them.

May i know your opinion on mares matrix? I'm thinking to get matrix because they are watch style but with additional digital compass. But is it reliable?
Hello Eddy P. I have been using the Matrix off and on since 2013. It is a great computer as far as functionality. The digital compass that is built in has some great features as well. Navigation through the menus is pretty easy with a little practice. The biggest reason I prefer the Mares Smart over the Matrix is, the Matrix is not compatible with the Blue Link system, allowing you to down load you dives directly to the MYSSI app. This may not be a big deal for some, but for a Mares dealer and a SSI Instructor Trainer, it is a no go for me. I do keep my Matrix around as a back up computer though, and have had to use it in certain situations.
Very helpful. May I add a sixth question? I have bad vision, so wear a reading and distance contact when diving. My sixth question is can I read the numbers underwater with my contacts. Kind of eliminates the watch style for me.
Certain models like the Genius definitely make it easier to read while diving.

I really like the Shearwater Teric. I guess you could say I am a watch style guy.
I own the shearwater teric and absolutely love it. It connected to the wireless transmitter I have for my aqualung 750 perfectly. The 750 is great but has two major flaws, it sucks down a battery like there's no tomorrow, and it's nearly impossible to read on the surface and at shallow depths. The teric also has wireless recharging, so no battery changes. I've heard wonderful things about the perdix ai as well, I think some of my tech diving buddies use it.
@@JohnJones-iq7uj you should be able to adj the brightness of the screen to make it easier to read. The battery should last a good day of diving one of my buddies gets 5-6 1hr dives easy out of his.
@@diversdown2116 Yes, the brightness can be adjusted, but at full brightness, it's still hard for me to read in broad daylight, and it eats the battery even faster. With the 750, I can MAYBE get through an entire weekend without a battery change, but the teric doesn't have these issues, I can read it easily on any brightness, and the battery is easy to recharge. The 750 is a great computer, but the brightness and low battery life is what had me searching for a new one.

So personally I like a computer that I can change the batteries in. Rechargeable computers are nice for some, but I have enough trouble remembering to charge my cell phone. I have wore a watch since I was about 5 years old, and feel naked when I don't have one on. So remembering to take it off to charge it bothers me. If you wear a wrist style computer that is not suitable for every day use as a watch then a rechargeable computer would be fine with me. I will say this, one major benefit to a rechargeable computer is, you never have to purchase a battery kit every few years.

Hey, are you still using your Smart Air? It looks like in your newer videos your wearing something else.
So I constantly change between the Smart, the Smart Air, and the Matrix. It all depends on the day. The Matrix is my back up. The Smart Air is my go to for teaching and warm water diving. The Smart is for everything else. I have several different regulators systems I use multiple times a week, its not practical for me to un-mount and remount my transmitter on each. So I use the Smart. In the summer time or when I travel, I typically will always use the same regulator, and this is the one my transmitter stays on. I could just by multiple transmitters, but I hate spending money.
