    Transcript:
    This is our casual kilt model, it’s our entry level model here at USA Kilts. It’s made from poly-viscose which is a man made machine washable fabric. It’s coated with Teflon so it resists stains. It also has anti-pill technology which is a fancy way of saying you won’t get those little bumps like you do on other fabrics from rubbing up against things.
    There are four to six yards of cloth in this kilt, it depends on the size of the sett and the individual. It features Velcro closure, three belt loops, and each pleat will be about an inch and a half wide. This kilt is useful for wearing to the highland games, the pub, and casual events around town.
    This is our semi traditional style kilt, it’s made of the same poly viscose fabric as our casual kilt. We make it with straps, buckles, and fringe so it looks like a traditional kilt which is why we call it the semi traditional model. As I said, this closes with leather straps and buckles and has fringe on the front apron. On the back of the kilt are the buckles, the two belt loops to fit a traditional kilt belt.
    This kilt is made of five to seven yards of cloth, depending on the size of the individual and the size of the sett. This kilt is a little dressier and can be worn with an Argyll jacket and vest or dress it down to wear to the pub as well.
    This is our 5 yard wool kilt model. Construction-wise, it is made the same way as our semi traditional kilt, just made out of wool. It can be made in thousands of different tartans from the mills in the UK. This kilt has embossed leather straps and metal buckles and fringe down the front apron. The pleats on the back will be 1 inch wide to 1.1 inches wide, depending on the size of the individual. The pleats are top stitched; looking closely you will be able to see the top stitch down the top of each pleat. We do use a color thread that is in the tartan to camouflage it as best we can. The main difference between this and our semi traditional model is that this has a cotton lining on the inside.
    This kilt uses 5-6 yards of cloth depending on the size of the individual and the size of the sett. This kilt is perfect to wear to the highland games or can be dressed up with an Argyll or Prince Charlie jacket and vest combination for fancier occasions.
    This is our premier 8 yard wool kilt. It is available in thousands of tartans from any of the mills in the UK. This kilt features pleats that are 3/4s to 1 inch wide. All of these pleats are sewn inside out so you don’t see any of the stitching from the outside of the kilt. The excess bulk from the upper part of the pleated section is scalloped out and a horsehair canvas lining is put in the top to reinforce the structural integrity of the garment.
    The horsehair canvas lining is covered with a cotton twill lining, and that’s the inside of a premier 8 yard wool kilt. This kilt has embossed leather straps and buckles and is made to the highest quality standards for a lifetime of wear!

    Rocky, this was one of your most informative videos. Well, all of them are informative to some degree, but one is the kind of video that can help someone to make a decision about what type of kilt to consider buying. Well done!

    Poly Viscose (aka Poly Rayon) is a 12 oz, man made, machine washable fabric. It's woven by one of the same mills in the UK that weaves our wool tartan cloth and is finished with a Teflon coating. While it isn't quite as nice as heavyweight wool (frankly, nothing used for a kilt is better than wool, hence why wool has been used for a few hundred years), it IS the best alternative to wool that we've found for making a kilt, by far. Offering Poly Viscose kilts allows for us to make kilts for people with wool allergies (who otherwise wouldn't be able to wear a kilt) and / or for those looking for a less expensive alternative to a traditional wool kilt.
    Also, having the cloth woven in the UK (with the kilts made in our shop in Spring City, PA, USA) helps us keep the price down, while still being able to conform to our Celtic Artisan Guarantee: www.usakilts.com/information-and-videos/information/celtic-artisan-guarantee.html

    I would like a little more for those of us who do not have a clan tartan, nor identifiable group (such as military). There are several occasions during the year that I would be able to wear a kilt, including my favorite outdoor music festival, The Muskegon Irish Music Festival. I am the true American mutt, but there is Norman English and Irish in there. I do not feel comfortable "passing" for a clan member. There are only a few "general" tartans, none of which I really like. Do "district" tartans say I am from that area or are they more like a team logo that anyone can wear? Are "ancient" clan tartans, or tartans of unknown clan kinship (such as Crieff ancient) acceptable?

      Mike, wear any tartan you like best, that's rarely restricted. If you look far enough back in your family you will probably find a grand mother at least who is a Scots decent. Otherwise, you mentioned Ireland. If you are unsure what county that family connection is from, choose the one you like best or go with a Irish National tartan. USA Kilts has one that looks nice.

      you can have them taken up and refitted.
      depending on what you payed, this might be a better option.

      @@chefkdowgShortening a kilt is a major undertaking because of the pleats. They are set-in so well that turning up the bottom doesn't usually work because it screws up the bottom of the pleats. A better option, (but a great deal of work,) is removing the waistline and cutting some off the top, then replacing the finishes at the waist, but then that presents a problem with the placement of the straps and buckles.

    • @USAKiltsOfficial
      @USAKiltsOfficial  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Poly Viscose is a man made fabric. It's Polyester and Rayon (Viscose is the British term for Rayon). It's not quite as nice as wool to make a kilt, but ASIDE from wool, it's by far the best fabric we've found to make a kilt from.

    A 5yd kilt is 5yds and 8yd kilt is 8yds and a 15yd great kilt or plaid is 15yds, the size of the person wearing it denotes the size of the pleats not the length of the kilt, some pleates are as big as 5 in and some as small as 1/2 in, but a 5yd kilt is 5yrds.
    And, kilts are NOT traditional Scottish attire, they are now accepted as such but they are not, traditional Scottish male attire was a 15 yd plaid as the kilt was not invented yet and wouldn't be for like a hundred years, they were first used by the military untill the dress code and disarmament happened then all we're outlawed. This is why the pleats are there it's for sizing, a fat man can wear a 5yd by reducing the pleat size and a skinny man can wear the same one increasing pleat size. One size fits all

    • @patrickkeller2193
      @patrickkeller2193 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This is factually wrong, no kilt or plaid was ever 15yd long. Great plaids are the same as kilts, anywhere from 5 to 9 yards long; the difference is that great plaids are two yards wide to cover the upper body.
      Also how do you define tradition? Kilts were created in the 18th century by removing the upper part from the plaid, which is only 200 years older. Before that the Scotts wore tunics and leggings like everyone else in Britain.

    • @robertbradford3461
      @robertbradford3461 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patrickkeller2193 no not factually wrong not completely, currently today they make 10 yd tartans to order from most places. And you said yourself traditional as defined by? The kilt of course and the fact that the plaid came first as early as the 1400s and the kilt part of the plaid is not called a kilt, the kilt came from the military when they began to wear only a kilt and separate tartan in like what 1700's until both were banned, so actually the only factually questionable thing I said was of a 15yd tartan, and though it wasn't normally made I'm sure one was because of what you said yourself the length is determined by the size of the persons it was an exaggeration based on that
