I discovered this movie in 1989. I caught it about 1/4 in on HBO one night. I bought the paperback of “Red Dragon” the next day and read the book in a single sitting. This movie was such an influence on me. Thank you for introducing it to a new audience.
Another actor: Chris Elliot of Cabin Boy and Get a Life fame (and numerous appearances on David Letterman) is also one of the forensic team that analyzes the Tooth Fairy note.
There has been a lot of Hannibal Lector based content. I read the books when they came out and enjoyed them. But I would argue that Brian Cox is the one actor that absolutely convinces you he has killed and eaten people. And Peterson best portrays the kind of personality required to hunt these people and the impact it has upon them. Until Millennium, no one ever did an emotionally traumatized investigator better.
What i love about Manhunter and Silence of the Lambs,is how Jack Crawford has limits. He needed Will because his mind only goes to a point. How Farina plays him..There s just stuff he wont think about and that costs lives..Will was his star Agent..The one who thought outside the box. There are moments when Graham will say he s gonna do this or get me the That.. Then There s this beleagered look on Dennis Farina s face . Why? ...The man has reached his peak ,He knew he had to get him back because otherwise its that scene when he says Its a forgone conclusuion The Moon is full ,lets face it we re too late this month..We got the team and the scene will be fresh as weve ever had it. Thats what happens when Jack has gone as far as he can and the team as good as they are still wont have those closing pitcher kinds . His wildcard, hotshot Agent. Its crazy how he had already excepted that Another family was gonna die and maybe ,since the team is hungry and the crime scene will apparantly be so fresh that theyll hage a better chance of Killer making mistakes. Graham says He wont stop..Why? He s just getting a taste for it. When Crawford and his team are on the road After a killer named Buffalo Bill..Even though the Movie isnt a sequel to Manhunter in a sense. It is but most who saw Silence didnt know they were both adapted from the same Author and seties.Unless they were die hard Thomas Harris Fans. Yet just like the blind helpless final girl scene similarities here is the other. If youre a fan of Manhunter as i was and I noticed that Crawdord is intensely got his eyes On Starling, and its like he is grooming or Shaping her into some mold and he isnt sure if she s just a waste of his time or if she was that particular Agent that brings everything Jack has pulled together and utilized to get the job done. He s like Gregg Popovich, He s the head coach and these people are who he s scouting for to make a successful unit. Because when they are in the car after viewing the woman with the diamond shape Skinning and moth down her throat. He s kinda like agitated with Starling, the case something we wont catch on first view. If you are a fan of Manhunter and Silence you will see he is setting her up with specific questions and then she says i..He wont stop.. and you see it in his eyes, So he Asks Why?..Because he s just a taste for it..Jack then knew he had his Closer, that one who will go where his talent and just way of thinking couldnt go further. To where the cold cases would start mounting up.There is a continuity in the Crawford character, and i believe its the same with The blind Helpless damsel with the killer playing out the same. Its Like how Metal Gear Solid 2 was to the original.. Clarise is Raiden or Jack "The Ripper" The next generation of Foxhound . The whole game was some weird Meta Simulation of the events from the First Metal Gear Solid.Certain things were similar or even deliberately written as to have these tipping point moments that align theme wise Plot, character etc..I just appreciated how Farina and Sheppard are 2 very different in their portrail of Crawford. Mainly just on the surface level though. You know here that Jack has probably been on edge because hes got another Serial Murderer like Francis D. and before. He needed to be right about this woman. He was about to reach his peak on the Agro Crag and people are gonna die unless i find my Hotshot Star Agent. You see it in his eyes like these are continuations and i wanna say growth..I cant here because That s how Crawford is written in the films as adapted from the Harris books. We have 2 adaptations of A Original and its Book Follow up are both in their ways.Producers,Script writers. The Director having a vision and yet they got the best aspect about these books because they werent really relatedto each other. One guy Has a Fast paced and kinetic energy and stylized Version where everyone lives near or in the coolest and nightlifiest kind of place. Even Dollarhyde had those city skyscraperlight in view from his swamp Ruby Ridge like place. Then the other is making an adaptation of This book which is the sequel to that one etc.Demme is making the tone for his Telling like Cronnenberg s The Dead Zone, with atmosphere and tone that is The 3rdact of Psycho but its the whole movie. Its when Vera Miles is making her way to Bates s house in the afternoonish .The cicadas.. The old Model T and you get this sad visual storytelling thru the rooms or homes of these characters..and the whole movie is about innocence lost and trauma. Differing tones yet they both still work as a series because the characters are translated to the screen smoothly and accurately. Even if you get A Pizan Tropical shirt wearing who aint blowin smoke up ya ass.. He couldnt do any other way because his brain hasnt and as we see just isnt gonna go further..He need s Will Graham and Clarise Starling because without em He just cant go further.. Thats when he needs to pass that baton and crumple up papers like and scream Ya fuckin right and id do it again! Thats just cool as hell to me..
It's interesting how you describe Brian Cox as "like Dracula" because I really feel like his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter influenced Claes Bang's performance as Dracula in the 2020 mini series of Dracula (which I'd love to see you guys discuss, I think you'd have strong mixed feelings haha)
A character played by different performers that is consistently excellent for different reasons... The only other one that comes to mind is Pennywise the clown, and that's just two portrayals.
I remember watching this years ago because I was obsessed with the Hannibal trilogy. I always kinda thought it was cool that Frankie falson was in all the movies, it's the kinda silly fact I feel the need to tell people that don't care... Red Dragon deffinitely ended better but other than that, there wasn't a whole lot of difference other than Red Dragon was more updated. I felt Anthony Hopkins was the best Hannibal and Mads Mikkelsen was a younger version of his portrayal, less refined, but you can see the pieces beginning to shape up. I must admit, I didn't watch the full third season of the show as it wasn't as captivating as the first two series.
Currently on a season 3 rewatch. The first half is really rough. Once it gets into the actual Red Dragon stuff in the second half, it’s back to its old strength, and a great finale.
@ruffastoast8570 enjoy the journey! Richard Armitage as Francis Dolarhyde is worth seeing, especially as a comparison to Manhunter. They even use a lot of lines straight from the Red Dragon book.
Who else is royally pissed that they didn't promptly make a Mindhunter season 3?
Maybe one day…

Hey lads, dont know how you fell into my algorithm but you did and its resulted in a new sub. I really like your style. Keep em coming
Glad to hear it! Welcome to the channel.
FINALLY! A in depth video on this amazing film :) You have my SUB!
Thanks for the sub!
Brian Cox makes HL terrifying with calmness, not with theatrics.
Agreed it was a great take on it.
Awesome deep dive - looking forward to possible future exploration of the Hannibalverse. Episode ranking of a season of the TV series anyone?
Is that Tom Cody himself?!
Great film, good review!
Michael mann cut his chops on Miami vice TV show that's where he honed his style of filming

Whoops! Maximusolivia9982 beat me to it!

I absolutely love Cox has Hannibal in Manhunter. My favorite Hannibal though is Mads.

And subscribed this was badass to watch
Thank you and welcome!
You guys definitely need to catch up on Michael Mann film's.
Have since watched Heat, and it was great. Still lots to see however.
I remember seeing as a kid on NBC
A character played by different performers that is consistently excellent for different reasons... The only other one that comes to mind is Pennywise the clown, and that's just two portrayals.
That’s a decent shout. When they inevitably remake it again in 10 years we can see if this one holds!

If you haven't read the novels how into it can you be?
It’s on the list!
Obviously Chris Elliot was the best thing about this movie.
That’s who he was!
