    Thank you for that! I really wanted to sit down and write about how I thought it was just fine. This movie is probably one of the easiest movies to translate into other languages; the Japanese text and dialogue would be preserved, and all of the English dialogue (dog and translator characters) would be dubbed for any other country. I think people just want to have an excuse to make an uproar about "cultural appropriation", a phrase that gets overused and misused a lot (not all the time, as there are instances where it's used correctly, but this is not one of them). I might still write about it sometime...

      A common critcism is that, even though Wes is attempting to honour Japanese culture and Kurosawa’s filmography, the film relies on and perpetuates racist and orientalist stereotypes and caricatures, making the Japanese characters cold, inscrutable and unrelatable. Using stereotypes isn’t inherently bad practice, but the power dynamics between “the West and the East” means that there is an unbalanced portrayal of asians in film. The way he imbeds the meta elements into the actual film and animation (especially translations, like the digital simul-translate device) also limits the experience of non-English speaking viewers, and especially Japanese viewers (who often found the Japanese dialogue, which is not meant to be understood, muffled and distracting, as well as the onscreen Japanese text distracting, as well both groups speaking Japanese totally dismantling Wes’ use of language as a device), making it very anglocentric, primarily to be experienced from the english-speaking view. It makes me jump between the questions, what responsibilities to artists have in society? and how can we justify the potential real-world harm done by an artist’s expression? Ultimately, I think that the film is orientalist, regardless of intention, but that doesn’t mean Wes or the film are fundamentally bad or wrong, but a good jumping off point for a discussion about balanced representation in media.
      Also, I loved it! It made me cry, but that doesn’t mean its not flawed, and criticising a film doesn’t always mean people are seeking attention.

    I loved this movie. It made me laugh out loud and it had moments that genuinely moved me. And the comedic time of both the animation and line delivery is excellent. My fave but is when they fight over the bag of garbage.

    And I have a Dog! So extra love!

    Thank you for being the voice of reason. I was all ready to grab a pitchfork and go stick a whining bitch! I LOVE dogs! Mine passed away a while back and this movie gave me the über feels! My spouse is Japanese/American. Half the theatre was of Japanese descent (Hawaii). I studied Japanese performance and deeply respect the culture. But this wannabe crybaby stuff has GOT TO STOP!! This is a comedy that pokes lighthearted fun at a fictitious city and its evil cat-lovin mayor. This movie was amazing and the artists that created it - cast included - were phenomenal. So, yeah. Thanks for preventing me from landing in jail for life.

    People calling this movie cultural appropriation towards Japanese and overall Asian culture is like calling a film like Coco or any other Mexican/Latino culture based film cultural appropriation. In short it’s idiotic unless of course the film is blatantly making fun of the culture and the people or isn’t presenting them correctly.

      Olga Kholod I totally agree. Second part was good even with that twist. I honestly did like the second part that did cut corners (place the last two snakes or hitman in the same place), retell what happend in the church rehearsal but with more context , that live grave scene where she had to punch her way out of the ground. I also did like the element of actually using some of the run time to get her training with her sensei. It was good its just that pacing wasn't always there, (especially with the reveal and what follows after that) seemed a bit to slow for me.
      Nonetheless I still enjoyed watching them back to back on early morning.

      Darjeeling Limited got some flack when it came out. For Darjeeling Limited the biggest discussion around it was that it simplified all of the Indian characters. That being said, the film was also about Westerner's forcing themselves in things they didn't belong and how tourists treat these places as sideshow attractions.

    • @nishapatel-vu9lm
      @nishapatel-vu9lm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As a British Indian, I thought that Darjeeling Limited was fine, there were the attractions but the characters approached them in a curious sincere way. The Indian characters were slightly 2D in places but that is because it isn't from their viewpoint

    I honetly loved the movie, but I really hated Tracey (the American girl character). I felt that it made absolutely no sense for her to be American in a movie where allllll of the other characters were either Japanese or translated barking. Just weird and unnecessary. Plus, the character herself was pretty underwhelming, both in performance and in writing.

    Wes Anderson has an issue with writing and using people of color. In an attempt to accurately portray these cultures like in Isle of Dog or Darjeeling Delight, it comes off as using the culture and people as a backdrop and props. I don’t think he means to do this viscously, but is a consequence of western fetishization of the east.
    Broey Deschanel made a great video about this and the topic of orientalism as it relates to Wes Anderson.
