This is what's been missing from my swing for years. "Wind, unwind" has been my mindset. Sometimes I hit it good, most times bad. tried many thoughts to "get to my left side". Now, you've given me the "how", and the "why" to go down first, then extend. I have always 'skipped that part'. This starts today. Thanks, Rob!
As a long time Stack & Tilter, I’ve always had a problem with the timing of “crushing the cam, “ when you advise crushing it (going down & forward with left knee and shoulder). I find it difficult , since I am bending the knee that’s supposed to be doing the crushing. It’s only when I start straightening the left knee do I feel like I can crush the can. I learn something new every time I watch your videos! Best coach on TH-cam!
I'm with u weirdo... I straighten the left leg to start the swing... cant get a good feel of going down... trying now to feel more pressure on the bottom of my left foot to start the swing
Thank you Rob, this is exactly what I needed to see. I’ve been lifting up too soon. Perfect. However I can’t remember when I last wore anything with belt loops 😅
Rob, now I am confused, I watched a video of yours yesterday that said the first thing that happens in the downswing is the hands are pulled down, which is it? Thanks! 😀
Had my first lesson with Billy Irvine today at Leatherhead GC, who directed me to this video. I am a high handicapper just starting out with S&T, and had a tendency to bend my left knee inwards during the backswing before extending my lead leg too early and “jump” up, leading to inconsistent strikes. Down and forward, crush the can. Great instruction, clearly explained. Looking forward to more lessons!
Dude, you might just put the final piece into my S&T swing! i have had a dramatically progress in my game in just 1 month, going from totally lost my swing, to giving myself a fair chanse of par almost every hole..What i struggled with is off the tee! since i started going more around my body i went from super slice 2 snaphook..and trying 2 experiment between those 2, its always a lottery...But i just went out and tried 2 "crush the can"with both irons and driver, and irons felt extra crisp, BUT driver felt also clean!..ofc it was just into the net, but if i can take this feeling 2 the course, it will feel much better with the driver! I have practice so much lately my whole body hurts lol, but i was looking for the "final piece" 2 get the right timing, and this feels great!😇 Thanks Rob!
Love your video on shoulder and knee down. I watch all your videos well demonstrated and easy to understand. Stack and tilt is the best swing for solid contact, and I believe your one of the best teaching it. Hopefully people find your site. I know I tell people about it. Thx Steve F
Great explanation as always. I’m going to search and review your old “down & forward and up & back” video now that I have a better understanding. Thanks
Thank you, Rob, I have watched several of your videos and the contents make so much sense, and they appear genuine solutions to sway and early extension frustrations! A work in progress development for me, but looking very positive. Tks!
Thanks Rob! I think I’m keeping too much weight on my lead foot at address (85% or more). Doing so leaves nothing to transition into to start the downswing. I’m going to try this drill with a little less weight forward at address (maybe 60-70%) and feel the shift forward before coming down.
Hi Rob, my club fitter made me do the same start of the downswing a year ago (had not heard of S&T back then) I practiced it all winter, but at some point I felt (which face on video confirmed) that I did exaugurate it so much that my spine at P4 started tilting towards the target too, the feel was that I literally "fell" into the ball too much. Although I could not really feel it or spot it on video I think it made my body instinctively react by getting up too soon. In the book it seems that the S&T inventors don't mind a slight 'towards the target' tilt too much as long as the hips and weight moves forward quickly and the shoulder center stays in place. But to me the idea of my spine not being on a vertical plane as a rotation axis (in face on view) feels totally wrong to me. What's your take? My "fix" by the way is to focus on flexing my lead knee straight towards the ball only (or even slightly in front of it) in the backswing and resist the temptation to angle it away from the target
Another excellent video. I fully understand the concept of weight pressure at set up and no weight shift. But the part where mileage may vary is how much weight pressure to have on the front foot at set up? I’ve seen videos where it can be from 60% to even 85% but that seems too big a variable. And also it is subjective anyway as far as the percentage. Meaning what I might think is 60% might actually be 70% or 55%. So I guess my question is do you just have to experiment with the feel of front foot pressure to get what works for you?
Great video, on 'Crush the Can', however, I seem to be slicing the ball(R) when practicing. And the clubface is square at address. I seem to be hitting before the ball each time!? Is it just a case of keep practicing? 🙂Many thanks....
Rob: As is customary tremendous video Some tour players like Mac O'Grady and the player in this video @ the 8:49 time stamp have their clubheads somewhat higher and less loss of angle @P- 5.75 Others like Scottie Scheffler don't What factors determine a higher clubhead or less loss of angle just before P-6 ? Thank You
Good stuff, Rob! I have been S&T for a few years now and this move has always been confusing. I was trying to trail side crunch to initiate but after watching this, that must be wrong as that move causes the left shoulder to raise not move downward. Will try this today.
@robcheneygolf1 Thanks for making this video, Rob! I’ve gotten lazy with this in my transition and it’s the perfect wake up call. In your original video on this move you mention it works for every club that you hit from the ground. Does the ball position under the lead shoulder and hips being farther forward in the driver set up change this move at all?
The FEEL is down and forwards, but the push back up starts to happen very quickly, so there isn't (shouldn't) be a great deal of actual head movement when done correctly. This drill is designed for the player who starts the downswing by raising the lead shoulder too quickly and hanging back with the weight.
Fabulous instruction Rob. Nothing but gold.
Thank you! 💛
Rob is by far the best instructor online ! Listen to this man !!
Thank you!!! 🙏🏻

That’s great to hear! You’re in great hands with Billy, he’s one of the absolute best in the business! 👌🏻
My new favorite online instructor.
Very kind, Pat! 🙏🏻
Good stuff
Thank you!
Excellent video. Down and forward with stack and tilt backswing and proper wrist bow have really improved my game
Love it!!! 😍
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
I am finally grasping this move but why has it taken me so long I don't understand! Very worthwhile video. Thanks Rob.
Cheers, RC! 👍🏻
Rob, crushing the can is the great tip I was looking for. I can strike the ball much better now. Thanks!
Love it! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Thanks . Your demos are very clear and simple . I will adopt your techniques in my practice and take it to the golf course . ❤
Thank you for watching! 👍🏻
Grant Waite demo swing is classic!!!! Great lesson Rob! Thanks !

This was the missing link for me. Perfect video
Glad the video was so helpful! 👍🏻
Valuable drill . Thank you Rob
You’re welcome! 👍🏻
I think this guy is the best online instructor 😲
Very kind of you to say so, Chris! 🙏🏻
I can’t see when you sat down and forward arw you pushing your knee to outside your left ankle. Or just pushing your knee towards yours toes?
thank you matey!
Thanks for watching!

The amount of side bend (tilt) plays a big part.
Many thanks @@robcheneygolf1

Happy the video was helpful, let me know how you get on with this feel. 👍🏻

In your original video on this move you mention it works for every club that you hit from the ground. Does the ball position under the lead shoulder and hips being farther forward in the driver set up change this move at all?
Is this for Driver as well?
Yes, the shift to the left is the same with driver ↘️
To be more specific .... is the pressure on the lead foot on the heal of the foot or the balls
Initially the ball of the foot, moving more towards the heel as the pelvis turns in the downswing and follow-through.
Does this also work for the driver?
Yes, it does 👍🏻
This move always confuses me a bit as it seems to contradict keeping your head still during the swing i.e. head on the wall drill.
The FEEL is down and forwards, but the push back up starts to happen very quickly, so there isn't (shouldn't) be a great deal of actual head movement when done correctly. This drill is designed for the player who starts the downswing by raising the lead shoulder too quickly and hanging back with the weight.
@@robcheneygolf1 Thanks Rob! That helps. Always appreciate that you reply to comments.
Is this another way of saying the old advice to keep your back to the target at the start of the downswing?
Somewhat. But keep your back to the target while shifting your weight to the left side.
