As a beginner in Procreate, thank you for explaining EVERYTHING in detail and why each tool does what it does. This is soooooo extremely helpful and is actually easy to follow along with!

I usually skip their videos. I watched your video from start to finish because you were straight to the point. Thank you so so much for sharing your way. Thank you thank you!!!
This has got to be one of the most creative ideas I have ever seen! I don't know how you figured all of this out, but thanks so much for sharing it with us! God bless you!
Love this technique. Thanks a bunch for sharing your knowledge. Sometimes if you’re using a photo taken with an iPhone, you can remove the background of a subject by holding your finger onto the subject till it glows, then slide it, you’ll see just the subject & can paste it as new photo. It doesn’t always work out but when it does, it’s a real time saver.
Thanks Joel. Would you please do a longer hair dog and it does NOT have to be watercolor or the same technique as this video, that would be great. I have done some of your other tutorials and enjoy them a lot.
I truly cannot thank you enough for all of your videos. Your skill, generosity, voice, teaching style, and personality are perfect and very much appreciated. I’ve learned so many tools that I can apply to additions projects! The one part that keeps tripping me up on this tutorial is the eyes - I can get them to look okay when it’s primarily dark black/brown, but with any cat eyes or eyes with additional color, I can’t seem to capture the true essence of them.
Really enjoyed the tutorial. So I tried this with my black lab, not really crazy about the way it turned out, he is all black with brown eyes, so didn’t have many colors to choose from. I subscribed to the channel, I’m falling in love with Procreate.

Wonderful results, needs a little patience and attention to detail but so worthwhile. I had coincidentally just finished a pet portrait using more traditional digital method…I.e. reference, drawing and painting with watercolour brush set and both give pleasing results but with different means to an end. It’s fun to try both. Thank you again for the hardworking you put into making these tutorials.
It always amazes me as to how many different ways there are to get to the end result. Found this fascinating as well as helpful. You showed me a better way to use the curves tool which helped me to understand it much better too. Thanks so much for sharing your process & techniques!
I loved this technique I'm a very new procreate user and have drawn my dogs and also friends best friends. My dogs are ticked black and white and I didn't understand how to set the curves. Also do you write a step by step guide as well as that makes it so much easier to remember when your an oldie like me. I will post my effort on fb of your dog. I will definitely be coming a Patreon soon. Thank you so much Joel
Hey Jo :D I dont write guides unfortunately, though i wish i had an extra day a week to do so :D For a 2 tone dog you can bring the curves right close together to just make it black and white. So drag the blacks in the bottom right along the bottom of the curves to the centre, likewise drag the whites from the top right to the centre at the top.. Then move them both to either the left or right depending on the dog. Hope that helps and i hope to see you join the family over on Patreon :D
I’m so glad found your Procreate tutorials….they are so detailed and with a smooth and easy workflow. I’m using much more tools and modes for creating artworks. Thanks for sharing🙏
Your video is really awesome and you show what to do step by step especially for me a beginner! 🥰 I have a question- if you have a black dog with 5 colors and a red tongue sticking out. Should that be included in the red section or another color layer added? Should you go with the original photo color for the tongue? Also is there a bug in Procreate? When I select yellow sections. Some very small areas in a bearded dog, the erase icon all of a sudden shows up and my section of yellow is gone! This has happened numerous times and I never hit anything.
Hey 👋 that’s going to be a struggle to do to be honest. The best thing to do would be to add a coloured background, so the dog can stand out a bit more. You might also have to tweak the curves a lot just to bring out some shadowed areas
Really hope you see this. I gave this a shot using my nephew. Figured what’s the difference, colours are colours. It’s just what’s selected that matters. Apparently there’s a trick to it because mine looks way more avant garde. If there is a difference in doing a human, could you do this again only using a person? I know, allot to ask given you did this video. It is however a year old if that helps. 😜
It’s just beautiful. But how do you do this with a long haired dog, for example a sheltie? Do you have a video too? I think it’s difficult with removing the background with all that fur
Hello Joel I have a question, I can get the dog to the canvas…when I have the lines I cannot get them on the dog the lines every time if gives a black silhouet can you please tell me what I do wrong…the invert does not work…thank you so much
Hi! When I try to select the automatic option the dog turns all with blue light and blue navy. What could be the reason? before this step, my dog is red/ black and yellow. THANK YOOU !!
So I'm guessing for a pet without any black, I'd color the "black" layer same way you did the "red" choosing my pet colors from the photo. I'll have to try it later, hope it works!
Thank you for this tutorial! I’m doing it for the second time today and was hoping for some help/clarification on the Curves process for dogs with colored fur. On the example you gave of the yellow lab using the Curves, it’s back appeared black. Would you have left this part out of the black masking process, since it’s obviously not the same color as like the nose? (I don’t really know how to phrase my question, I apologize if it doesn’t make sense). Thank you!
I tried doing this with my dogs but after I finish the curves step and get to the select step (7:37) when I tap on any black parts, everything turns blue and black. Any ideas of what is going wrong? Thanks!
This is an amazing tutorial..new sub here...also a digital watercolor newbie...wondering what your initial canvas dimensions are or will dimensions of canvas automatically adjust after importing the watercolor background you've generously provided? thank you again!
Hey hey, my canvases when they are square, tend to be about 2000x2000. you cam find the canvas size under the name of the file in your gallery view, where you see all your designs :)
I am having trouble with the masking tool. When I select the black area, then select the black layer and click mask I end up with a grey layer and a white layer with no image of the dog in either. Was I supposed to hit copy before I selected the black layer to mask?
This technique looks brilliant. I'm just testing it out now but I've gotten to the yellow layer, and the auto select is selecting the whole image?? I'm on the right layer, but can't seem to get it...any help?
A fabulous tutorial. I'm very new to digital art and found I kept touching the screen with the edge of my hand, very frustrating! I notice you wear a glove, can I please ask where you get this? Hopefully this will stop more accidental errors 😖
Hello I love this tutorial! Having trouble at 14:20 when painting the black layer. The black paint is not appearing. I ensured I am on the right layer, have 100% opacity for the brush. Any suggestions? I really would like to finish this painting :)
Hey hey 👋 it’s hard to say without seeing your layers but I believe you are on the mask. You need to be on the layer not the mask. If that doesn’t help feel free to message me on Instagram for further help ☺️☺️
Thank you so much for the tutorial - it’s very easy to follow. I have a papillon dog who has a lot of ear fringe and fur, and I am having a hard time with his portrait. Do you have any plans for a fluffy dog tutorial??
I dont see why not, though a dog has more separated colours so it may be a little different. I actually made a water colour that can be done on people - th-cam.com/video/K-5GxYlKqi0/w-d-xo.html
I have been following your video right up to the point where you have to go to the black layer and choose your wash brush and start painting to bring out the black image. Every time and I have followed the video exactly up to this point nothing will appear. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?
Hey Joel! I feel like there is something that I am not doing right. First of all, all of my layers default to gray. Everytime I try to select the colors, I am getting a plain blue screen. :'( Any advice?
I think your selection strength is too high, try tapping and dragging to the left to reduce the selection strength. Also try making sure colour fill is turned off on the selection menu
Love this tutorial!! I have a question though? When using the curves do you just look for either 3 or 4 colours? I have a drawing im trying to change to watercolour but there is more than 4 colours. I always struggle with the curves part!
Thank you for this!! Great tutorial, however when I’m on the white part on the automatic fill tool, instead of turning my background black it turns it blue, and I was wondering if you know why know why that is? Thanks!
Great work! 👌🤩 I tried a different picture, of a person 🙃 and I failed... What I did wrong I do not know. The problem is that I can only mark one area in the black layer. Same goes for white, red and yellow layer. And then nothing shows up marked on the mask attached to each layer. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? 🤔 So frustrating 🙃 Sorry for my poor English!
@@JoelCreate I don't think so. I didn't fill the layer with white in the beginning though... Maybe I should just do exactly what you do, and test out the same dog pic. Thanks for your answer! 🙏😊
Hey hey so could be one of a few things but it could be your selection is too strong when you tap to select your first selection, tap and hold instead, this will bring up the selection threshold. Keep holding down but swipe to the left of your screen and it will lower the selection strength. Let me know if that works
Please help. It works great until I select my blacks. All the black turns white - check. Then it all goes wrong. Go to black layer, add mask. All I get is a blank mask, and original picture stays without the select3d black. I can’t see a step I’m missing; what am I doing wrong?
I was golden until I got to 7:40 and tapped on the nose to select it and instead the entire photo turned inverted colors😩 I’m using the same photo as the video. Any thoughts one where I went wrong?😅
@@JoelCreateYOU are my new favorite person! Thank you so much for responding so quickly with a clear explanation of what to do and teaching me something new! Appreciate your style of teaching so much!🤗
I’m struggling….. when I select the black let’s say and then go to mask it on the black layer..the selection tool doesn’t stay on and nothing masks…I’ve tried for hours lol…what am I missing?
I love this method, but upon trying different images, I’ve found that the curves method doesn’t work with many dogs… many times, I can either get the shadows OR the highlights to be right, but when I move the two nodes together (anywhere on the graph), one or the other is too light or too dark. Not sure if I’m explaining that well… it’s just not working for most images, unfortunately. Any advice?
hey hey so in practice i used the technique on several dogs, however i dont doubt that a few factors will potentially break this technique as all dogs are different. 1. the photo used and its lighting and quality. 2. the dogs patterns or lack of. Feel free to send me a message on instagram with photos of the design you are attempting so i can better understand the setup :)
I'm really struggling with isolating the colors. Everything will be going great and I'm following along then suddenly when I select a color to isolate it, it inverts my entire photo and makes it blue. What am I doing wrong?
i selected the 'black' layer and used 'washed' brush and when brushing on the canvas, no image starts to appear. i try to go harder but still no image. what happened?
Make sure you are no on the mask. The layer has two parts now the top part is the mask. The lower is the layer. Make sure you are on the layer ☺️ hope that helps
I have followed this a dozen times. After I selecgt all the black, then click on the black layer, the selection tool goes off automatically and I cannot get the mask to show the black spaces, what am I doing wrong?????
I can only get this to work on the photo provided. I've tried multiple other photos and I just cannot get it to work. After filling the canvas with white and merging the 2 layers the curves feature doesn't work properly and no mask shows when I try to select the different colors for the layers. It took awhile to get the first photo right following step by step but that is literally the only photo that I can get to work properly. Maybe this just isn't the tutorial for me :(
ok after reading some comments I figured out what my two main problems were. 1. Color fill was ON and 2. The threshold was too high. I was able to finally get it right this time :)
@@JoelCreate I add the background from procreate then I go to the action tool and add a photo but procreate then takes me to my photos which are in my iPad gallery
For the life of me I do not know what I am doing wrong. I have followed this tutorial with the supplied canvas and picture and also with my own picture and it is not working. Every time I select one of the colors it does away with every part of the picture. Same problem as Marie L in these comments. Is there a setting that I am missing? I'm so frustrated right now. HELP! lol
Hey hey so could be one of a few things but lets see what we can do. 1. Do you have colour fill turned on? if so then it needs to be off 2. when you tap to select your first selection, tap and hold instead, this will bring up the selection threshold. Keep holding down but swipe to the left of your screen and it will lower the selection strength. Let me know if that works
Make sure that you are on the layer that you used the curves selection on. You then use the selection tool and choose all the black areas. Then, with those areas all selected, you go to the layer named “black” and mask it.
Louise…I understand what you’re saying….unfortunately, each time I have started over, did my curves on the correct photo layer since the other photo layer is disabled, I am not on the color layers either, clicked on selection and automatic, clicked on the nose….same results. Very frustrated as this seems to be a fun one to do. Thxs for trying to help.
Ok….I went through all the comments and saw where Joel talked about “tap and hold” on the selection and then drag “left” to lower threshold….worked…no longer frustrated so we’ll see if I can get this completed….

I was golden until I got to 7:40 and tapped on the nose to select it and instead the entire photo turned inverted colors😩 I’m using the same photo as the video. Any thoughts one where I went wrong?😅
Tap to select but hold down your pen, then drag to the left to lower the selection strength
@@JoelCreateYOU are my new favorite person! Thank you so much for responding so quickly with a clear explanation of what to do and teaching me something new! Appreciate your style of teaching so much!🤗
Very useful tutorial and powerful Procreate tools - Thanks!
I’m struggling….. when I select the black let’s say and then go to mask it on the black layer..the selection tool doesn’t stay on and nothing masks…I’ve tried for hours lol…what am I missing?
That's exactly the trouble with with these so called step by step videos. Most of them miss things and they are terrible, like this one
Same thing is happening to me
i selected the 'black' layer and used 'washed' brush and when brushing on the canvas, no image starts to appear. i try to go harder but still no image. what happened?
Make sure you are no on the mask. The layer has two parts now the top part is the mask. The lower is the layer. Make sure you are on the layer ☺️ hope that helps
When I try to automatic select the colours, it just inverts all the colours on the layer? Am I doing something wrong
When you make the selection make sure to turn off colour fill on the bottom
Menu
@@JoelCreate im having the same problem, i think procreate fixed it- it doesnt seem to work :(
Your selection strength could be too high. Tap and then in the same tap drag to the left to lower the threshold %
Help!! When I try and use selection tool it just inverts the image 😢
Turn off colour fill 😀 I think that will do it
Make the selection then turn it off in the bottom menu
I have followed this a dozen times. After I selecgt all the black, then click on the black layer, the selection tool goes off automatically and I cannot get the mask to show the black spaces, what am I doing wrong?????
Do you have colour fill on?
@@JoelCreate I didn’t check, thank you for answering so quickly. I have my iPad charging now, and as soon as it’s back up, I will check that
@@JoelCreate Thanks, that was the problem

😍😍😍
I can only get this to work on the photo provided. I've tried multiple other photos and I just cannot get it to work. After filling the canvas with white and merging the 2 layers the curves feature doesn't work properly and no mask shows when I try to select the different colors for the layers. It took awhile to get the first photo right following step by step but that is literally the only photo that I can get to work properly. Maybe this just isn't the tutorial for me :(
ok after reading some comments I figured out what my two main problems were. 1. Color fill was ON and 2. The threshold was too high. I was able to finally get it right this time :)
I can’t add a photo from the gallery to the canvas
How come?
@@JoelCreate I add the background from procreate then I go to the action tool and add a photo but procreate then takes me to my photos which are in my iPad gallery
@@vanessaramsden9894 that’s correct, then find the image and it will drop it in
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😍😍😍
For the life of me I do not know what I am doing wrong. I have followed this tutorial with the supplied canvas and picture and also with my own picture and it is not working. Every time I select one of the colors it does away with every part of the picture. Same problem as Marie L in these comments. Is there a setting that I am missing? I'm so frustrated right now. HELP! lol
Hey hey so could be one of a few things but lets see what we can do.
1. Do you have colour fill turned on? if so then it needs to be off
2. when you tap to select your first selection, tap and hold instead, this will bring up the selection threshold. Keep holding down but swipe to the left of your screen and it will lower the selection strength.
Let me know if that works
@@JoelCreate thank you it was the threshold. I don't know why I didn't think of that. Thanks Again!!
Finally solved my problem too!
For some reason, I followed all your steps to get ready to select the first color black and when I clicked on the nose I get blue around the area….??
❤🙏💫
I followed every step and still screwed it up....maybe digital art just isn't my thing
nooo don’t give up. I think your threshold is too high. when you select the area hold down and drag to the left to lower it
