there is just something about chinese music that moves me more than any other kind of ancient (well medieval) music... it has such a melodiousness and elegance yet liveliness to it

Tang dynasty was not in ancient times?

Yes, I appreciate the same "melodiousness, elegance and liveliness" in Yue/Cantonese traditional classical music performed and heard today.

I bought this album on cassette in Beijing in 1994 and I agree that the first tune (Huan Sha) is exquisite. I would love to hear it played solo on a pipa

Thank you for sharing this. I wonder who composed the pieces. The music doesn't seem to be based on the actual scores that survive from the Tang period.

you can try listening to Nanyin 南音 from Quanzhou, China. maybe the only genre that still preserved Tang Music.

There may be some remnants of Tang music in the guqin tradition (one or two pieces are verified to date from that period), as well as in the tradition of Xi'an Guyue. Some pieces in the Japanese gagaku repertoire (and the related solo gaku-biwa repertoire), which are still performed today, also have their origins in the Tang Dynasty, though they are performed much differently today from the way they were in the Tang period.
As far as nanyin goes, the instrumentation and musical style are more typical of the Ming Dynasty than the Tang Dynasty, despite the performers' claims that their music has Tang origins.

Very interesting. Can you tell me what guqin pieces date from the Tang? Also, do you know of any good reconstructions of Tang music?

    • @archkde

Hey Jack, silkqin.com would be of great help for you in identifying which qin melodies came from the Tang period (although since most qin books were published during the Ming and Qing dynasties, I doubt it can be definitively said whether a given melody in these handbooks are from the Tang, and would have sounded like this back then). Be careful though - you could click on connecting links on that site for days and days and still find new interesting information! (I'm speaking from personal experience...)
Perhaps the hallmark of Tang musical reconstruction is Laurence Picken's work. I don't think the documentary (called "On the Road to Tang") is on TH-cam, but you can send me a PM and I can email you it.

Is this violin we can hear in the recordings? Isn’t Tang music played without occidental instruments ?

    不純也不雅了!這就是現代“國樂”,跟蒙古的音樂比較相像,ㄧ千年前的人的靈魂已經不在山西了! 福建搞不好還有些純粹的古代靈魂吧!北方果然已經完全是胡種!
