- My friend Mike from Always Evolving Pythons bought this killer 21 window bus recently and is getting ready to go deep on an upgrade including designs by Sean Smith, interior by Gabes Custom Interiors and some potential mechanical upgrades. But this thing is already a badass with a turbo helping to make some good power and Porsche wheels for a cool look.

Hippies drove whatever they could get their hands on, as long as it was cheap. The VW Bus/Hippy thing is a Hollywood spell that just won't die.
I had 5 23 windows at 17 years old. Everyone was on the Cal look bug trip. I was getting these for $700. Buffed them out and took em to Pomona. Sold for $1800 thought I was smart. Looking back I was an idiot.

When ever I see a VW van any style of this era, it makes me miss my 64, 7 door panel delivery bus.
It was such a blast to drive.

Dude named Rolando built that bus, had Vic at The Lab build the engine. He then sold it to a doctor, (he was smiling all the way to the bank) then the doc must’ve sold it to this Mike guy. But it’s an iconic bus in the VW scene. I’ve been lucky enough to have a picture of my 58 ragtop bug next to that bus.
Unfortunately the engine has cheap Chinese cylinders and the trans was held together with wire ties so it’s undergoing about $15K in rebuild of engine and trans plus wiring issues. But it sure looks good and when it’s rebuilt by pros it’s gonna be a great bus

The bus is beautiful. The less you do to it the better. Install the engine cover, correct headliner and oil cooler if it doesn't have one. I've been driving a VW bus for over 20 yrs., they are great!

I would lose the roof rack and air ride, put on beefier wheels up front and get the stance sorted, also put the engine cover back on and maybe modern seats up front.

Okay, I know this bus, well not personally, but I've followed it since Motormavens did a write up on it. It's Rolando's. I liked it so much I researched the colours used and painted mine like it. Mine has a few next level bits in it that you might like to check out on my channel, like the one off VDM petri steering wheel made of bamboo and carbon fibre. And, in the works right now, a Westy roof rack with the support bows made of bamboo and the slats made of carbon fibre. A real old school meets new world shit. I'm excited to see the direction you take on this. Hope you don't mess with the VW purists too much or they'll rake you over the coals on theSamba.com.

I remember back in the day (pre y2k) I bought a 65 roller 23 window and sold it for 500 bucks. Missing everything and I didnt have the drive at that time to do anything to it.
i gotta 61 double cab but the motor coach was fun to drive feet up on the dash and you really felt like you were flying on the white line of the middle of the road.
Damn does that toaster ever make some nice sounds!! Cheers.

Fatter wheels up front, swap a Porsche 914 5 speed in, add a 2332 crate motor and you'll be golden.
Get a couple buds and cruise in it. Take it to Rodeo. See what they think. Just have fun with it!

It'd be a shame to really fuck with it much. And no it didnt come with a 1500 originally. These are worth close to 100 grand as is. DONT RUIN IT.
What did it come with? I read a 1500? And it won’t get ruined. It’s already been modded so originality is gone as is

That thing definitely has at least a 2 litre engine in it. You could totally leave it like that and be done. But if you are gonna redo that thing you would have to take it to another level to actually improve it cuz it's already bad ass. You are talking some big cash.

Love it, but ya, I would only change the interior to stock. Maybe the wheels; get them in chrome to match the bumpers. Put the lid back on the engine and do a Subaru turbo swap and 5-speed. That's my plan for my 15-window.
i have a 1960 og paint vw bus. I want it to be a sleeper so i would love to find out what the engine and transmission specs

I know he didn't pay half of what you think it's worth. Not much of a motor, turbo attached to the stock intake manifold. Those are not real Fuch's. The rear & middle seat are not correct. They are missing the seat bars and kick panels. If Mike works at Gabes I'm sure there's nothing for you to do on the interior (Lumpy tweet headliner) Don't do a feature if you don't know anything about it and your not going to show anything that's been done

You’re driving it like normal car. Those high rpms, changing down into the corners while cruising slowly, are going to kill the motor. It’s either go with lots of air or chill
