    No offense, but this is ugly. Doesn’t fit the character of the house at all. I usually don’t critique things this strongly, but that was the only word that popped up.

      I would have used fugly. Absolutely hideous. She destroyed that beautiful room. All it needed was to cover the red paint with something light. I watch design shows all the time--I love them. I've never seen one this ugly. It actually makes you nauseous and dizzy. She must secretly hate the homeowners. I don't want to believe she's truly that awful.

    I absolutely love this! I realize it’s not everyone’s cup of tea for many valid reasons, but count me among the camp who embrace the fresh take and creative spirit. What Sarah says at 21:10 sums up why I think it works so well.

      Seriously. If you don’t want it to look so woody, put in some painted furniture or mix the wood tones. It’s a crime to paint that trim.

      Wrong. Way too much wood. Doesn't always work for the family. Great Great Grandma wood. Brighten and lighten. Dark wood overkill. They did the absolute best thing for that family and that room . Dark wood doesn't always work.

    As a fan of period restoration, this makes me sick to my stomach. Paint the walls a light color, paint the "band" at the top a darker color to add contrast that's fine, but you leave the woodwork (and the floor) it's stained color, clean it up and apply a nice satin finish to it to make it glow . Since they painted that beautiful and in perfect condition stained woodwork, they should NEVER have added that black to the panels on the doors, OMG what the hell was she thinking? It's AWFUL! New light fixture and sconces, yes, definitely needed. That drape material - BUTT UGLY! The chairs are okay in style and I like the black frames but the new upholstery colors - ick, the white table is okay but looks like plastic - maybe it IS plastic! NOT a fan of that new light fixture, NOT a fan of the stupid looking china case that is totally out of character with EVERYTHING in the room and the period of the house, and that rug is ridiculous. You do NOT use white in a rug that is going to be used for a dining room. Natural texture sisal or similar that can easily be vacuumed up. Geez - I'm disappointed in Sarah's choices in this room. Overall, not a fan of the end result.

      I think it looks great, and it serves the home owner's purposes much better than it had been previously. I never understand the "wood purest" aesthetic. Wood is just a building material. There's nothing sacred about it. If a room has wood trim, wood floors, wood doors, wood windows, wood furniture... there's a point where it becomes so ubiquitous that it's not really special anymore. Plus, it saps a lot of light out of a room compared to white trim. Stained wood should be used like any other design element: if it suits the goal for the space in a particular location, then use it. Otherwise, you've got to be willing to let it go. Forcing a room to be a slave to any design element is not good design. For instance, the table is definitely a cheap table they bought at IKEA, and they explicitly stated that they chose it because there were very young children in the house and they wanted it to be durable. They can buy a nicer table when they kids get older, if they want, but for now they're not worried about needing to be precious about the table. So, that table serves their purposes very well, and they're not letting a design element detract from the functionality of the space. The materials should always serve the space, not the other way around. That goes for any design element that honors the period the structure was built in, as well. Period restoration is nice, but not every old house needs to remain a time capsule to the era in which it was built. This isn't an ugly room. It's just not your taste. You're welcome to dislike it; that doesn't mean the decisions were empirically bad.

    I just started watching, and my choices would be
    - a light paint, that matches the color of the wood, perhaps wallpaper
    - keep the wood as is, because the paint will give it a completely different dimension
    - sand and lighten the floor
    - new modern light fixtures, that gives more light and gives the room a fresher/ more modern look
    - mirror, to reflect light and make the room feel bigger
    - a big nice carpet covering and defining the sitting area, go for natural materials, since there are kids
    - new longer table, with chairs, probably with washable covers, that are easy to take on and off, make themselves, or change following seasons
    - built in seating by the window, with storage underneath

  • @guitardee1

    Far too busy on the eye and the scale of the curtain fabric is too small and spotty looking for such a large area. The "poppy" fabric next to it in the shop would have been my choice (only because there were those two to choose from. There may be others that would work better

    • @CardsbyMaaike
      @CardsbyMaaike 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, the poppy next to it or allium was better., or a blocky design with the colors from the chairs, wide stripes or squares, not fussy little people... Sarah said not a lot of pattern, but it's soooo busy, also fifties inspired, (not modern) the round white table was 60's might have gone well, but then they say you need a carpet to anchor the chaos....with more chaos. A carpet underneath a dining table is madness anyway, but again too stark and busy. Don't mind the trim painted white, but again the starkness of the black and white on the doors, is too much, unless the drapes looked like the doors, then it would all tie in together. Ideally black white and one accent bright color on the drapes in my opinion, but hey at least it's not all grey like all the interior designers did a few years back, like living with bare concrete

    @ginam3379 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    OMG. It’s hideous. I love mixing modern and traditional and can even (sometimes) justify painting wood trim but this is just... awful. I actually quite like the drapery fabric but it’s being overwhelmed by the colours, the black and white rug, the black and white paint, too much furniture. I can’t imagine a pleasant family dinner in there. It looks like a room that would just amp up a couple of rambunctious, small children. I think the person who mentioned the word “circus’ in the comments, nailed it.

    I have a dining room like that - oak floors and window frames, an antique walnut table, and a Renaissance revival sideboard. I love them. I modernized and brightened with a lighter paint colour, a new light fixture that is still traditional, sheer curtains, and new dining chairs. I've seen a lot of Sarah Richardson's designs and I'm shocked at this mess. Her designs are usually stunning, elegant, and high-end. Maybe she let her wee twerpy posse who can't even spell "sapphire" influence her too much. Is this a dining room or a kid's playroom?

Notice how there is absolutely no footage of any other part of this house? Probably for a very, very good reason. I realize this is not a new show, maybe as much as 20 years old, but COME ON! Stop painting over beautiful wood!!! Change the wall colour....but leave the wood alone! This is why I hate these shows, as far as I’m concerned you’ve ruined the character and charm of this house completely!

    Reminds me of the eighties with different colors on the chairs, drapes (these are very eighties), patterned carpet, the mirrors , chairs .... very beginning of eighties.
    And to the person in the comments that don’t want to paint wood: keep that to yourself!

    I have to disagree on painting the wood trim on this one! With this caliber of wood, design around it...

      Sarah did a makeover where the homeowner insisted that all the woodwork be left as is, and it was honestly the absolute worst makeover I've ever seen in my life. It was almost as if she did nothing because the room looked exactly the same.

    Ok, that might be the worst makeover I have ever seen. I have watched this more than once REALLY trying to find one thing I like about the final product and well it's just ugly. Oh, wait I do not hate the drapes......I just hate them with everything else in the room. Totally ruined that beautiful sideboard!
