It's about a UBC student in behavioural studies who did and experiment. He got a LARGE fish tank, divided it in two sections with a glass wall, put a barracuda in one section and food fish in the other section. A couple of weeks ago, I was lifting weights at my local gym while there were three other people present: the gym manager, another guy weightlifting, and a woman who was probably a grandma. It was the second time I had seen this grandma at the gym, and I thought it was admirable that she was trying to get in shape at her age (probably mid 50s). At one point, she walked in my direction to go to another station, and I made the mistake of smiling at her and saying "Hi" as she passed by. She glanced at me, then scowled and looked away as she passed by. I thought to myself, "That was really rude." Afterwards, I realized that she assumed I was trying to chat her up, rather than expressing a casual, friendly greeting that I would have said to literally anyone at the gym. It will be a long time before I make that mistake again.
you did nothing wrong and met a weird person, so what. getting anxious about it and thinking this was a mistake is the completely wrong approach. greeting people you might like is completely normal behaviour. sometimes they recoprocate, sometimes they dont, thats life. move on and try with the next person you like. your way of doing thinks is equivalent of a guy going to a boxing gym as a beginner, you try to swing but you got hit first, and now you leave instead of trying to continue. it is a very weak resolve to a setback and the exact opposite of what you should be doing in such cases.

But the experience does add to the number of times I've had less than positive reactions from women when I did nothing more than offer a courteous acknowledgment of their presence.
