  • Ischia Dolphin Project is a long-term study on cetaceans based in the central Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy) and the research expeditions are supported through volunteers’ participations.
Focusing on personal growth, socially responsible behavior and teamwork, the experience allows transferring to different users the values of biodiversity and species richness of the Mediterranean Sea.
The encounters with such charismatic mega-fauna as whales and dolphins in their natural environment together with the comprehension of their complex behaviors, societies and threats, help in understand major conservation problems, including habitat modification, overfishing, resources depletion, pollution.
The boat environment promote the values of recycling, energy efficiency, water and resources conservation.
The crowded waters of the Gulf of Naples offer an insight into the impact of human beings on the environment that leads to a greater appreciation of our natural habitats.
IDP team is a direct medium for awareness actions. With the confidence of volunteers and intimate knowledge of the environment, they can actively present educational materials and discuss conservation issues.
They directly improve volunteers’ understanding and awareness, sensitize them to environmental issues, and care about the species we study.
IDP scientific publications, courses, events and workshops contributed to the establishment of the Marine Protected Area of the islands of Ischia, Procida and Vivara, in which the cetaceans’ critical habitat was partially included.
