"Maybe if our son was not told he was going to hell his whole life, he'd still be here" was absolutely so raw I burst into tears.

That childless mother found a whole bunch of babies who needed her love, and they found a mom who would fight for and beside them. I love this so much.

You are right. It will and It does get better. I’m glad you found this video. There are people out there who love you as you are. And give your dad time. It sometimes takes time for people to come around. My family came around after some time. Happy Pride.

EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS!!!! The set-up scene! The vocals! The costuming! The _complete turnaround in meaning for the Javert part!!!!_ I actually cried at the end. As someone who wished desperately to play Gavroche as a kid and who now one day hopes to be one among a hopefully vast (come on, theater industry, you can do this by the time I'm good enough to audition, it isn't hard) number of future transman Javerts, this rendition means a lot to me.
We have a horrifically and absurdly long way to go for liberation, but that does not mean we can give up or that we can't or haven't made indisputable progress. We have always been here. We will _always be here._ We are an immutable feature of organic life and the human species. The conviction that radiates from every performer in this video is absolutely emboldening. It may seem silly and frivolous, but this gives me hope.

Why is it that every trans masc Les Mis fan I know wanted to be Gavroche and now aspires to play Javert? Every single one?
Myself included, of course. Stars is my standard audition number.

Lol I can’t even lie, I was cracking tf up just bc it was SO DRAMATIC and literally SO ACCURATE to how all our meetings used to be, back in the (very) early 2000’s. I swear, all of our disagreements (basically every other sentence) could have been a script for a progressive version of “Dynasty” 🤣 ah, I miss having so much passion, but I REALLY miss the belief that things would change where I live. RIP my blissful ignorance.

Eponine has always been my favorite, and I was expecting that one part to fall flat. But, my God, it was beautiful. Beautifully sung, beautifully emoted. I am in love once more. The entire production was beautiful, but to see Eponine given the justice the character deserves is making my heart soar. Not an easy part after all to try to follow in Lea Salonga's shoes vocally.

OMG you guys, I thought this was going to be like a "Miscast" performance and I was thinking: "This should be perfect while I eat my sandwich." Several bites into my sandwich (and a few minutes in the vid) I realize this is a dramatic performance. And then when the mother broke down, I had to put my sandwich down! Then when I heard the dad speak the words at first instead of singing, full body chills, tears. Also: would like to mention this entire experience was amplified by an edible.

This moved me to tears. I’m the adopted daughter of a transgender parent. We lived in a small town and it was in the mid 1980s, when this fact was brought to light during an ugly divorce. Nobody there even understood what transgender meant. Today, it’s recognizable, and has become part of this coalition. I love my parent very much and she has surgically transitioned and I think she is incredibly brave. Love and support to the entire community and to paraphrase the late Senator Edward Kennedy, “still the fight goes on and the dream shall never die”

first of all: i love the concept, i love the costumes, the adaptation choices are interesting, there are some really outstanding performances (eponine!), the emotional resonance worked for me, unlike some others i think one day more was a clever choice because it gives almost all important characters a solo part and combines different musical themes, whereas do you hear the people and drink with me are mostly chorus songs.
i wish the part for enjolras had actually been properly adapted to the performer because it was just slightly our of their range and that made parts of it sound unclean. i also feel like the acoustics didnt really work on tape, as the volume of both instrumental and singing seem to shift. it honestly sounds to me like compression or automatic noise elimination in the mic. live performances are always hard to record audio-wise, musicals especially.
that said, i find some of the criticisms here silly. of course the song doesn’t fit 100% cause it wasnt written for this, that's what creates subversion. it's like non of y'all have ever been in a jukebox musical! i think most of the choices when it comes to the song were really creative, the libretto didn't do it for me but i find that less important.
so a couple vocal performances could have sounded cleaner, but this is not a studio recording and some of these actors are unfortunately singing out of their range. they also probably didnt rehearse for months like full proper broadway musicals do.
honestly unless youre a vocalist yourself and have done this before, i think you should soften your harsh criticism. bc i spent half my life on stages and i can tell you that even fantastic, seasoned singers can give a subpar performance, especially when there's bad acoustics, they can't hear themselves properly, or their part isn't quite in their range. these people clearly all display good technique, sometimes that just doesnt save you.
also ..... this is literally a charity event. can we keep that in mind?
ETA: i am always down for a good dragging when people just genuinely suck technically, but none of these performers do. their technique is good, they have proper breath control and support, they all have parts that sound very clean and the parts that don't sound out of range. it's very hard to sing out of range and it never sounds good.

    • @jessjones32
      @jessjones32 ปีที่แล้ว +6

First I just want to say that I am genuinely happy that so many people found joy and took strength in this performance. I didn’t love it but that doesn’t mean I’m not happy for those who did.
I am all for using songs subversively- that’s what Broadway Backwards is all about. I just don’t think this one was done *well*. I get that some of the lyrics won’t fit, but the problem is that they just didn’t seem to fit the narrative they came up with. I thought it was an odd choice to put the straight couple front and center- even if it was in relation to their son and their journey of acceptance. I didn’t think it made sense to set up the lgbt+ community as the revolutionaries then have the dad/Javert referring to the proud boys (I think?) and their actions as the revolution they had to ‘nip in the bud’.
It has been mentioned in other posts but I’m not a huge fan of shaming people for not being out, so the Marinus/Cosette part didn’t land for me. (I absolutely agree about the Eponine part- they really killed it!) The fact that the Thenardier part could be read as casually fat-phobic has been mentioned too. I just that it was kind of a lazy plot point to say he just wanted swag or that the Mme. Thenardier was there for the food. They could have done a lot more to make them truly antagonistic- like have them threaten to our people or blackmail them.
I didn’t mind some of the vocals being pitchy- I absolutely get what you mean about it being a live performance and for charity. I just think there is room for people who loved this as well as those who loved the idea but not the result :)

I hadn't seen this one before. The "Broadway Backwards" are by far my favorite clips to share with my non-theater loving friends. I only get to Broadway occasionally, but when it's Equity Cares donation time, I do dig deep into my wallet.

I really enjoyed hearing the Eponine role sung in a different voicing. The first couple of chords let me know we were in for a great ride of chord variations and voicings. Beautifully and emotionally performed. Bravo.

I’m a non binary bisexual who lives In fear of my parents knowing. I originally came out to them as a lesbian almost 3 years ago and they supported me. Since then it just seems like 1 step forward 3 steps back. It’s comments like “that haircut makes u look like a boy” or saying things that are just downright hurtful to not only me but so many others. I wish I could stand up to them and be proud about who I am as a young queer person but it’s hard when they are all I have. I have 2 friends who support me through and through and even them it’s hard for them. They are not trans like me so how could they ever understand. Back to the point, this video makes me remember the people and the community that came together to make a massive change in the way they were being treated. Less than human based on something they couldn’t control. I wish to be a part of something like that. I wish I could be out and proud. So thanks broadway backwards for giving me some sense of hope that in a few short years I can be just that
