I first heard this instrument a few days ago while watching a documentary about the Japanese on Borneo during World War II. I instantly fell in love with both the instrument and music. It's really beautiful. Thanks for sharing this! It's hard to find acoustic versions of these instruments here on TH-cam. I don't care for the electrified versions.
Andrew Garton It will be tragic if this music and the knowledge that goes with it is lost. I would hope that somewhere someone has documented it in video as you have here. I would love to learn this instrument.

Many great songs such as suling apui, kawa kabun, ilun jebut and lepo jalan etc. if you want to learn the instrument, theres a teacher i know named Hallan Hashim. pretty famous guy. He teaches in Miri, Sarawak and also provides online classes. he doesnt ship his sape’s internationally across the world but you need to go to his studio to buy one from him.

Commentary a bit exaggerated,sape music have been taught to a lot of young students nothing is lost. A dead master is dead master as it happens in other arts form.This music does belong and confine to any political boundary.Indonesia and Malaysia have a shorter history than the sape music so don't decry that it is an Indonesian/Malaysian culture.
When this film was originally shot there were very few people being trained in the Sape. This particular master player had only two students and he himself was taught to teach several generations of music from his region/village on the island of Borneo. It's good that more people are learning, but his concern was the loss of a musical heritage to draw from.

That is my grandfather...his name is Asang Lawai...Her Race is Kenyah in Badeng Group...
