It's quite incredible how effortless he makes his drumming look. What he's doing is so complex, so many subtle, intricate things going on. This is really something else to watch, getting this close-up of his playing. Thanks so much for this.
I agree. This track especially, I love the how patient the buildups are (2:14); how the single guitar starts from square one and utilizes a good deal of silence. Then the delay pedal kicks in, and then the drums as they get gradually more complex. I find that kinda thing fun and elegant and it's what makes this my favorite math rock album.
@@yana_2_6_0 it's actually not a delay pedal! altho I understand that confusion, Ian actually puts the 3 chords in a looper pedal, and then adds a 2nd loop of him playing those 3 chords again but delayed
1:46 the way he stops the crash cymbal ringing with his stick, hits the bell on it and then hits the bell on the ride while doing all the other shit he’s doing at the same time. Seriously the master of polyrhythms. My favorite drummer ever. Also that hi hat work with his foot. Nobody does that shit. And when he uses his hi hat as a crash cymbal and closes it real quick. What the hell. Amazing.
Don Caballero might just be one of the most important American pieces of art ever drawn and pulled from the sticky taffy-like ether of creation. It will inspire. It will hurt. It will awe. I'm 42 now and Don Cab has been with me on cross country train rides, heart breaks, death, the soundtrack to novels, and when my wife walked down the aisle to the beginning of Peter Criss Jazz. I am never not entertained and bewildered by Damon and whatever group of musicians that surround this human fucking tornado of talent. I am absoultely grateful for these playthroughs! Please cast your spell with twin wands on those drums like the wizard you are until the god damn wheels come off!
Probably my favorite DC track and that's saying something. Also the first I ever heard, I was about 13 when it came out, and it really opened me up to new sounds/styles. It makes me really happy to see him do it in full quality like this, so fucking smooth and effortless. As someone who jams along on DC on drums but without a double bass pedal, I really never put together how often and intricate the switches are between hi-hat control and the bass. Very unique as Che's style always is.
What a time to be alive to see these songs played through, recorded so long ago when the band was still active when we couldn’t see the notes played up so close.
very nice song, thank you. i think the camera work was the best in this video, nice color. Though you couldn't see all the footwork, not sure which is better
Amazing! I think one of the most interesting things about these close up vids is seeing that you're a 'heel down' player on the kick. I'm really surprised you can get that kind of power out of that technique. I guess it should come as much of a surprise since basically everything you hit is different than just about everyone else.
He's a pretty burly and strong fella which is probably how he generates such velocity with his right foot. I was always surprised by how deft his drumming is in general, prior to seeing them in the 90s I always imagined his style to be more brutish. Also, it's super cool to see Justin (Demonic Sweaters) chiming in here. His drumming with Lincoln and Kukim was equally as inspiring to me back in the day as Mr. Che. He rips some of the smoothest and articulate triplets ever!
Oh my god I’m so happy I found this channel. Don Cab is one of the reasons I started drumming 25 years ago as a kid. Way to go Damon! Glad I see the foot cam with that left foot action.
This is the first song of Don Caballero I listened to, it was on the radio 20 years ago (a french one called FIP with all kinds of styles, very eclectic). It was a delightful suprise, and I've never stopped listening for this band since then, which is on my top 3 of "musical artists that are very close to my inner child" (or something like this, probably simpler). My favourite song remains Railroad Cancellation. Thanks of lot for sharing these drum plays, and thank you Damon for being such a lunar drummer, with so much personnality and creativity in your style. It inspired me a lot in drumming. Long life to you 😊
American Don is one of my all time favorite albums. I spent so many hours in the car in college trying to figure out and memorize these drum lines. Thanks for putting up this channel, it’s great to see your music being brought back to life!
probably my favorite math rock song of all time, so glad to see you do a live playthrough of it Damon :) Don Caballero 3 would be pretty awesome to see you do live as well!
Damon, can we get this same style and these angles for Don Caballero 3? For 20+ years now my friends and I have used that opening beat as a sort of right of passage in drumming. I would love to see the detailed view of your method and style on that one!
I keep freaking out after so many years listening to you. I will never get bored of hitting the "repeat all" when I listen to your CDs. I can only think of one adjective: brutal artists. Deamon, please, I'd love for you to play again: No One Gives a Hoot About FAUX-ASS Nonsense. Please, it's one of the songs, if not the one I like the most.
Just came across yr channel- Holy shit, thank you for this video! Can,t help but smile watching these. Lucky enough to have been able to see Don Caballero live many times in NYC late 90’s - early 00’s. Couldn’t even count how many times I’ve listened to all of these records. Bravo Damon the Octopus
Really loving this! I was lucky enough to have ever seen you live in the Netherlands and it was phenomenal! I really like these playthrough videos. Really gets me inspired as a drummer. Still one of my favorites Damon. Would love to see you live once again!
This is so cool that hes doing these,:)))))) like witnessing something from another world or someone that came back from the dead, music complimenting or as well🙏💜
Most uncomfortable looking drum set up ever and weirdest playing style but absolutely amazing skill. Listening to this band in high school was what taught me to play the drums myself and I definitely wouldn’t have the same appreciation for music or drumming without Damon Che.
Damon, have you thought about remastering American Don with a slightly higher dynamic range? I would buy them again if they had a better dynamic range.
You forgot to do the patented arm raise before the snare comes in 🙂. I always liked the switch to riding the floor tom at 0:48, and the creative use of the cymbal choke technique at 2:38.
how did that snare position come about? i mean i get it’s the way you feel most comfortable playing, but did you find that out by accident or did you try the usual positions and those didn’t work out with your playing-style? just curious. your drumming utterly fascinates me.
@PfaffPfantom those are a pair of North Gun ear protection mufflers. They do not have headphone drivers in them, so I guess he's using them over regular earbuds or inears of some sort in order to reduce the noise level while recording. Hope that helped!
@@DonCaballeroOfficial Huh, might just have to get a double-bass pedal then. Been trying to learn Don Caballero 3 but my leg explodes trying to do those rapid three note kicks.
His wiki page says he does that "possibly to accomodate his long arms" but it's not a source that comes from Damon himself so take It with a grain of salt
Damon Che is the most drummer ever.
His hi-hat work is the largest.

Damon is one of my favorite drummers. I was lucky enough to see Don Cab in the 90's!
I don't exagerate if I say I've been dreaming of this play along for the last 15 years. Thanks Damon! ❤
Awesome so glad it's being received well!
I used to think I knew how to play drums. Then I saw footage of Damon Che and realized I will forever be a student.

I always wanted to see how Damon did this song. I’m stunned and jubilant! Even better than the studio recording. Incredible stuff.
his movements seem so casual, yet what he's playing is so complex and detailed
he dances with the kit it is visually beautiful aint it
That's a wild angle to that snare drum!

Effortless. A master. How busy has Damon been with drumming these last few years? He seems to play these tracks no problem!

It looks like he was doing a combo of heel down and heel up, but i definitely found that surprising as well

His foot / toe placement is more towards the beater than it is towards the heel plate, that's probably what it is.
that was just fantastic. I can't believe all 4 of his limbs are just always on the move doing something new after every beat. Damon Che Octopus
The fact that he can play with B8's and make them sound great just shows that gear doesn't make the sounds, the musician does.
