Why hasn't Chevrolet been sued or fined yet for making the brake light so difficult and expensive to replace? I also have a 2004 Grand Marquis and all I have to do is remove 2 screws on the cover, lift it off to get to the bulb to replaces. Some engineer at GM needs their keister kicked for the way they designed that light! Out of curiosity I just called a Chevy dealer service dept. He said it take about 2 hours to replace that bulb in a 2010 Malibu, several hundred dollars to replace a bulb that cost, on Parts Geek about $4 bucks.
So I am going to get an after market light assembly for that existing assembly, use 2 sided tape and stick it to the front of the existing light. Then run a wire over the back deck area,. Fold the seat down and run the wire from the light into the trunk and connect it to the brake light wire. Chevy can shove their planned labor charge up their rears on this one!

I’ve had many cars in the past and have never had such a problem changing a light bulb. Didn’t research before buying this 2011 Malibu. I’m dreading having to change the headlight bulbs whenever they eventually go out. Used to be easy but now it’s having to tear up the entire front end for a single bulb, third brake light etc. They want owners to take the vehicle to the dealership for every little thing. A light bulb should be a simple popping the hood or trunk and easy replacement at a gas station while pumping gas not requiring tools and at least 3 hrs of labor if you don’t want to pay a dealership $500 for labor plus parts to replace.

I am borrowing a Malibu and this just went out. "Ok, this will be easy. I've replaced a million light bulbs. Should be a few minutes... I even have an assortment of bulbs sitting around. so, I'll just get under it and remove this panel.......WTAF!?!?!???"

That process looks more complex than brain surgery. You would think that engineers, making $100k+ per year could do a better job of designing these things...of course, you would be wrong!
