      @@ThinkerThemer At first I was a little overwhelmed with all the numbers on the board, but I felt more at ease with the explanation. I thought the river mechanic was very interesting where you can be the "rabbit" of the game and jump ahead but sometimes it pays to be the "turtle" and be slow and steady. I also like the twist on making your player object known to others, most games give you a secret objective (which I enjoy) but it is fun to see things done differently.

    • @ThinkerThemer
      @ThinkerThemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the numbers are really just the cost to build... but the board is certainly quite busy until you get familiar with the iconography. This game has both revealed objectives and secret objectives which is a nice combo I think. But absolutely the best mechanic is the one you mention... that constant tension of jumping ahead or doing more things... Thanks again for watching 🥰

    Hey there! Impromptu joke got you a subscription! Found this via BGG notification. I really lime how you take turns & the attention to 2p vs 4p scaling. I value both views... Yay welcome back to Melbourne, glad you made it back safely! Getting to sleep in your own bed again must've been super comforting. Egizia looks cool, I like to think I am fairly well versed in BG titles but you guys consistently showcase games I've never heard of! I've been playing Viscounts of the West Kingdom this year, and it does suffer a little from demotivating people when someone is clearly ahead and uncatchable, even though all scoring is endgame you can usually get a sense of whether it is close or not. So I guess I am pro-secret-objectives too!

    • @ThinkerThemer

      Ooo we are yet to play Viscounts but that does sound like something that would annoy Maggie. Unless she happens to be very good at it 😆 it is so nice to be back home in VIC. Your own bed, your own routine.... not to mention the coffee...

    Excellent review! I remember seeing this one on kickstarter, but I passed on it. I think I saw a couple (p)reviews where the game could be a bit mean (maybe with the irrigation rings?). Maybe I'll be able to give it a try at a game meetup some time in the future :)

    • @terrencesoltz8943
      @terrencesoltz8943 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With four players, it can be very tight and a bit mean, more in competition for the best spots and cards, but occasionally with the crop rings as well. That said, my experience is with the original version.

    • @ThinkerThemer
      @ThinkerThemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Luke! As Terrence mentions it is mostly "mean" in you losing the opportunity to go to a space but the irrigation/crop ring is the most directly mean aspect. However it does feel like it isn't worth it to try to attack other players in that way and with a low conflict group I suspect it wouldn't even be used.

    At the end there I thought Maggie said 'This game is very sphynxy instead of thinky'.... And I'm with Maggie, I don't mind losing if it's a close game, but watching my point marker slip farther and farther behind is unmotivating. I LOVE hidden points in a game. I refuse to play games like Monopoly or Risk where the whole point to wipe people out of a game.
    Nice to see you two back in front of the camera and glad you are safely home.

    • @ThinkerThemer
      @ThinkerThemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      HAHA that would've been funnier than her Nile joke Stitch. 🤣 Definitely agree on your point about games with player elimination - I think Maggie would just walk out of the house and never come back if we played a game like that now. Thanks for watching and your support as always ☺

  • @terrencesoltz8943
    @terrencesoltz8943 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another solid review. So, I've only played the original on Yucata, but it looks like they've replaced the Tombs and Temple with the Columns and Statues? I've found that the Temple tends to get ignored, as it's too hard to fill in, without the ongoing bonus that you get from the Pyramid. It also looks like they moved the Sphoenix building spot to the end of the track, so you don't have to give up any placement opportunities to build there and get cards. Not sure how I feel about that.
    Ont the theme/artwork side, I like the colors. I think people have this idea of Egypt being drab mostly because we're seeing the art through a 3,000-year lens.

    • @ThinkerThemer
      @ThinkerThemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that's right! Your temple issues must be the reason they changed that. I like having the Sphinx cards at the end because you really have to think about how much you want them when trading off stone/power to build the monuments earlier. And you are quite right that we are used to looking at Egyptian artefacts once the colour has drained... maybe everyone can leave their boards out in the sun for a few centuries 😎 Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Terrence. 😊

    • @terrencesoltz8943
      @terrencesoltz8943 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThinkerThemer Now that I think about it, the tombs were also a bit wonky; if there was an expensive one at the head of the line, no one can afford to build it until halfway through the game, and it locks the whole line. Interested to try the new version whenever I get to play games in person again.
      Another thing. Were you in QLD early enough to catch that crazy sea foam? That had to be the most Aussie thing ever: “Hey, check out that cool foam, but don’t play in it, because it’s full of poisonous sea snakes.”

    My friend, Luke, got a copy of this just before the pandemic hit NY full force in early 2020. As a result, it hasn't gotten to the table yet. Hopefully, we'll return to something close to normalcy sometime in 2021 and we can meet at his place to play this one! And while the Nile joke was funny, I laughed hardest at the Phoenix/Sphinx mix-up, with Amy saying, "I don't know... theme." :-) As for the vivid vs. muted color question, isn't it likely that the muted colors people associate with Ancient Egypt today were more vivid in the past and faded over time? I'm with you two. As long as it's not painfully garish, brighter is better than bland.

    • @ThinkerThemer
      @ThinkerThemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So true Steve about the muted colours! Maybe those people can leave the board out in the sun for a few centuries 😅 Look forward to when you all have your boardgaming groups back together and you can try this one with Luke. Thanks for watching and your support as always 💕

      @@ThinkerThemer I've played Shipyard, but it's been a long time. My recollection is that it was a little clunky, but interesting. Definitely a point salad kind of game, where you're building ships section by section, outfitting them with gear, hiring staff, and navigating a channel, each action having it's own rewards and endgame scoring. If you're into rondels, though, it's worth checking out, just for interest's sake. It's kind of like Colonia is for worker placement games (but that's another story). The main action selection mechanism is somewhat similar to Glen More, except the tiles represent the different actions you can take. Some of these then lead you to manipulate smaller rondels to specify the details of your action. I remember not liking the navigation part, as it's kind of this awkward tile-laying sub-game that didn't seem to fit with the rest of it. One interesting bit, however, is the endgame goals. If I remember correctly, you start with a handful of options, but then you have to abandon one (or two?) of them after each round, until you're left with just one (or two?) at the end of the game. They can be worth quite a bit, so choose wisely!

    • @ThinkerThemer
      @ThinkerThemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds interesting!! Maybe if I can find someone who owns it and can teach me id give it a go. We have such a backlog as it is and the year has only just begun 😬 actually glen more 2, even with the rondel which i usually love... kind of fell flat for us.
