Ju-jitsu is ancient and everything was in it, including using weight distribution and leverage concepts. The word itself means "gentle/minimal force/by any means necessary", so the concepts of tiring out your opponent or using their force against them have always been in it. Also breathing through the diaphragm (the "harra" as they called it) is as old as paper. All high level martial arts players (Japanese or Chinese arts) have to use breathing within techniques to go beyond black belt. Gracie adapted and refined these concepts and techniques very well. Hey I liked the cold water breathing thing - I love cold showers and the energised sense of overcoming it with breathing powerfully. Good advice Kron!
I feel you're taking it to literal. Of course leverage was there before because without leverage there is no armbar. On the same token though a 120 lb guy tried to use strength which against someone like Matt Hughes would be useless. So you have to perfect weight distribution. Japanese JJ and BJJ are two different animals. With the same backround and origin story.
***** what 120 pound guy? BJJ is Japanese JJ. Carlos Gracie and Luiz Franca learned it from Mitsuyo Maeda, and taught it to Helio Gracie and Oswaldo Fadda respectively. Gracie became a big name and they have been bullshitting their history ever since. Yeah Helio Gracie could never do a pull up: philosophycommons.typepad.com/.a/6a01901e204628970b01a511caa927970c-pi
People, this kid's a beast, but he's still a kid. His training and his lineage have definitely given him some insight into views on physical and mental training. But he's still prone to the same bravado and egotism of youth. But some great words: "it only counts when you're tired." That is very true. When you reach exhaustion that is when you see what you're made of, what you can handle.
Funny how the Gracies talk about GJJ as its all technique despite weight advantage but when he was beaten soundly by Kimura it was because of the weight difference.
beating someone bigger than you is one thing, beating someone 80 pounds bigger than you who is the world's top judoka is something else. also look up Kimura's rules for the fight
Well, we are all humans. He got beaten by a better jitsu person, it happens. Some ppl just have one superpower, and its to brake all youre skills in pices, even though you usually win 999 times out of 1000. Im not a blackbelt, but ive noticed that some bodytypes have it easier with me then others. I dont have any other excuses when i tap, then being weak in the areas they are strong. Im learning constantly, and i feel that is what jitsu is and represents for me. Oss

I have great respect for this man but Gracie Jiu Jitsu is not the only Jiu Jitsu. Even in Brazil Maeda taught other Brazilians and Japanese Judo and Jiu Jitsu do have guard games, not nearly as extensive of course, but those arts do have guard techniques, lots of them.
I go to a school who the head professor is a black belt under Rickson Gracie....it is one of the best schools ive been to and these guys really stick to their guns and they work....its not living in a fantasy world. In the fighting world u habe to believe in yourself to be successful. Of all fundamentals ive been taught rickson gracie fundamentals are the most effective in jiu jitsu.
the idea is all behind defending yourself and what jiu jitsu is is a way to defend yourself well against any opponent in the street, they train all their lives soo they are prepared for whatever comes all through their lives, and if you are fighting in competition then weight can play a roll especially if 1 man is 150lb black belt jiu jitsu and the other is 220 jiu jitsu black belt theyre both black belts in jiujitsu soo they both "know" what they are doing and the 70lb advantage is exactly that an advantage but that still doesnt mean the weight will win the fight your ability to capitalize on your opponents mistakes is what wins a fight
He said his dad invented the positions on weight distribution? Didn't Rolls Gracie travel the world learning wrestling and sambo and other styles and combining everything to form what we know today as modern BJJ make it happen? There is a video with Rolls and Rickson rolling where Rolls tools Rickson in a sparring match .
LOL Helio didn't invent the guard. That's such bullshit. They had it in Judo and in catch wrestling it was bottom body scissors. Gracie certainly got really good at it however.
I see a talented young man trying to evolve in the shadow of a legend. “…only JJ there is…” that’s semantics not philosophy. He doesn’t actually believe it’s the only JJ that exists. C’mon peeps. Learn what you can from his insights. (..and lighten up) 🥋😌

LOL, the word Jiu Jitsu loosely translated means the gentle or compliant art. This is a Japanese word. Using leverage and your opponents force is one of the oldest themes through most Japanese styles (obviously excluding things like Karate ect). While I'm not taking anything away from the developments that occurred with the Gracie vein of Jiu Jitsu, because it has taken on a life on its own and changed and added many positive things. The fundamental principles of Jiu jitsu were not created by the Gracie's, not even close. The comparisons drawn between Jiu Jitsu and and "Japanese Jiu Jitsu" and that the Japanese versions are all about throwing and holding down are utter nonsense. This reasoning is looking at Judo and sport Judo I might add...which is not Japanese Jiu jitsu, it is Judo. What Gracie Jiu jitsu can definitely boast is that they have taken the application of "Ju"(gentle, compliant, yielding), to a whole new level on the ground, the same way Judo did with Japanese Jiu Jitsu's throws. Jiu Jitsu is a mother art at its origin and it has had many many specialists during its existence that focus on specific aspects and give rise to new strains of the style, Gracie Jiu Jitsu is no different...this doesnt mean its not good, it is, and it works, it just means that despite common belief the Gracie's did not come up with Jiu jitsu and its principles...it means that they adapted the same way Jigaro Kano did and hundreds of other Martial artists over time...That being said Jiu Jitsu does not belong to any one "inventor" (a term often used now days), over centuries warriors have forged what stands today, mostly through trial and error.
What he meant to say was that Helio reintroduced the world to fighting from a guard position. Nobody, not even the Gracie's will say that they invented the guard. Don't take it literally. What he meant was that nobody in contemporary society in Brazil or anywhere else utilized ground fighting in a Mixed fight atmosphere previous to Helio or the Gracies. Maybe Maeda did it in challenge matches or samurai in the battlefield, but most people won't claim to have learned about it from that or judo. Yes, Judo does it, but not the depth or philosophical dependence on ground fighting like the Gracies. They popularized it.
I know the history of Luis Franca, GFT etc... it's just that Kron like other people, doesn't articulate his thoughts as well as others. If you ask him about the Fadda lineage, I doubt he'd deny their existence. What he means is, Gracie jiu jitsu is pretty much why 99% of all BJJer's are doing it to begin with, specifically, Royce's achievements. Same with his comments on guard work etc. Seriously, what percentage of all BJJer's trace lineage to Fadda? 3%?
GJJ (philosophy) and keeping true with practical defense first in defining it's ideal approach. Efficient effective technique. I think Mr. Gracie miss spoke when he said Grand Master Helio "created the guard" he certainly developed it. It was a little used prewar judo technique. Weather they were aware or not only God knows.
