I left Australia 20 years ago and only just heard about this legislation, 5 years after it was introduced. Am I now going to be arrested if I ever return to Australia?

Whilst we don't think you'll be arrested it is important to note that the department of Immigration and the ATO's computer systems are linked so they'll know if you are coming and going from Australia. The ATO recently announced that they may levy fines for non-lodgements so its best to get on the front foot and enter into a payment plan with the ATO to start paying it down. More information from the ATO can be found here www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Study-and-training-support-loans/Overseas-repayments/

Heart-attack averted. My debt is an SFSS (formerly austudy suplement) loan and doesn't seem to be part of the "new" regime.
Still scary to think the legislation could change without me knowing. Need to get some voluntary payments in.

@@ScorchedEarthRevenge great to hear and yes a lot has changed in the past and will change in the future without Canberra advising expats
