- Another adventure with Chloe looking for suitable playgrounds for a 3 yr old little girl. Chloe has been constantly asking to go to a playground since we got to Korea so I finally took her to look for one.
Wandering around Japan felt a lot more safe than Korea. In Korea, we noticed a lot more people drinking and smoking on the streets than in Japan. I don't think Korea necessarily has more drunk people, but Japan seems to clean it up fast or hide it well (part of the Japanese courtesy culture?). In Korea, there were a lot more drunk and crazy people about - an old drunk guy even tried to grab Chloe! Fortunately, we didn't run into any drunk people or anything dangerous on today's adventure, but still, walking through unfamiliar streets is scarier in Korea!
If I were to bring Chloe back, I probably wouldn't want to bring her to the first playground, even though it is really close to us. There were too many old people smoking (even though there was a big sign that said no smoking) and it felt very run down and unfriendly. The 2nd playground felt more safe and a better place to bring a child.

I can explain a little bit about the smoking issue in Japan. As you may know, Tokyo will be hosting the 2020 Olympics so there has been a stronger push to enforce a public and indoor smoking ban. Unfortunately, a lot of (old) people are addicted to smoking, so making anti-smoking laws has been very difficult. You may have noticed that Tokyo has designated smoking spaces; smokers will face a fine if they stray too far from the smoking spaces, and this law was put into place not that long ago. If you walk in the more wealthier wards of Tokyo, you'll probably notice fewer public smokers around than in other wards.
Indoor smoking is still a mixed bag, some places don't have closed-off smoking areas and some do...😩 I don't understand the open smoking areas in restaurants though! Very annoying! 😤😠 I was in a cafe with a smoking section with walls that only went up halfway to the ceiling. 🤷😷 (How is that enclosed?!)
Dealing with public drunkenness and other crazy shenanigans (my husband and I were followed by a guy in Akihabara) in a foreign country is always scary. ☹ I'm sorry you guys had to experience that. 😟 Unfortunately, Tokyo absolutely has its share of public drunkenness. 😣😢 Drinking culture runs deep in Japan. It really depends on how late you're out and where you are walking in Tokyo. 😕 -sighs- 😔
