This made me cry! To think that this was her mother's last song and Kate is no more. To think that the song is about Proserpina, a daughter lost in the underworld and much longed for by a mother still among the living. To think that this is the story of all of us. I'm 50, I lost my dad last year, my mother is 80 now and very, very tired, herself so close to the underworld. Sometimes I think I'm sinking down there, too. But then our kids, our Proserpinas keep us here, busy with being alive.
I just went to her concert in Stockholm, and she was great, she had the audience in her hand. I saw couples swaying back and forth, people who kissed and hugged their loved ones, people who knew the texts sang with her. A great experience.
I just saw an interview with her on tv where she said this song was so special because of the fact that her mom was dying, but she could not go to her because she had to wake over her newborn son in an incubator at the hospital. I can just imagine how tough that must have been for her, her mom and her son fighting for theire lives and not beeing able to be there for both. Wonderful song...

I found Martha when I was 16. At the time, her lyrics didn't really ring any bells for me. Now as I have lived many years since, I think of her lyrics so much and how painfully some lines relate to me now. Her lyrics are absolute poetry. I adore her.
I heard this the first time at the end of a movie "TRASHFIRE". BRILLIANT. Sometimes I feel like Travis Bickle (taxi driver) and other times I think of the poison that Martha's mother wrote. I also had a cat called Orpheus (who took Proserpina, Persephone)
I was brought here by my parents, for without their beautiful union my journey here would not be possible. RIP mother and father - the world was a better place by your presence.
This is instantly one of my new favorite songs that she's done. Her voice always captivates me and takes me on a story with every song and that's personally why I love Martha so much. This is just so beautiful!!
The song was originally written by Martha's aunt the late Anna McGarrigle of Canada's McGarrigle Sisters. The only performance of the song by Anna -- to my knowledge -- was the live version she performed a few months before her passing (on TH-cam). One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Sung here with such conviction and power by Martha. A beautiful tribute. Amazing family of musicians.
+John LaStrada - My mistake...song was written by the late Kate McGarrigle. Martha's mother not aunt. I was writing way too fast. The only performance of the song by Kate -- to my knowledge -- was the live version she performed a few months before her passing (on TH-cam). A beautiful tribute by her daughter. Sorry for the error in my original post.
At first I was a little confused...."what is this?"....but then I fell in love with the melody, her stunning voal performance and the huge emotion in the song. Beautiful.
a brilliant song like others i was brought to this song by the incredibly under-rated film 'Trash Fire', this song is so excellently used right at the very end, it fits the mood of the film perfectly.
Where is the ascending third button here?? Not Like - Like - and .....?? Somebody has obviously fallen asleep on the job. That was really good. Thank you.
Just took me 10 years to find this song. Thank you, internet!!

This song makes me cry too
This woman is an artist of the first order.
So moving and brings me to tears everytime. Crying for my own Proserpina

Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III brought me here because they both brought Martha into this world. RIP Kate McGarrigle.
