    I just found this series and I'm amazed by the quality and the depth of the videos. I really hope that you pick this series back up and continue it, because this is the kind of resource that is needed for the best experience with those kind of games. Maybe the recent PC re-release of Bayonetta with smooth 60FPS framerate could make you reconsider the future of this guide, and its also a perfect time to continue it for the newcomers who couldn't experience the game during 7th console gen (like myself). Anyway, thank you for those 2 videos and I wish you all the best :)

      This is another thing which feeds into the missing risk/reward dynamic Yoshesque mentioned in the other thread. You have to go IN, gunfire doesn't make any difference. It's a subtle effect, but it's yet another genius bit of tuning which rewards the player for going nuts rather than standing back and chipping away at enemies.

      I used to have a lot of trouble with Grace and Glory/Gracious and Glorious especially on Infinite Climax and I still do to some extent. Learning how to fight against them with Scarborough Fair took a very long time for me. Basic dodge offset, panther offset, using the crow feathers, all of these techniques help to fight against them. Trying to trip them with pppkkk works especially well. Overall fighting against them always feels complex and challenging, and now I think they are one of the best designed enemies in the game.

    Great guides! Really looking forward to your next episode...
    I played Bayo 2 and enjoyed it, but the one thing I really felt was missing were the audio signposts. It not only changed the combat for the worse, it also made the enemies feel less interesting.
    And the game was super easy. Even on hard I felt that I was winning while spamming random attacks. Umbran climax really flattened everything out - it's like the game incentivises you to keep saving up for a nuclear strike. :((((
    Bayo 1 is the game I keep coming back to. It is mechanically pristine, and these videos really do it justice (the FP guide is awesome, but there's nothing like a visual demo..!)

      Sorry about that - I will fix in time for the next episode.

    • @Saur
      @Saur 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK - now this is weird. What browser are you using? Reason I ask is that in Chrome the audio levels are just as I set them and the voice over is clear and well above the game audio, but in Firefox there's some weird normalising effect going on and the different tracks drown each other out.

    • @AlterHaudegen
      @AlterHaudegen 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I think it was on Chrome (Windows), I just watched it again on Safari (OS X), and I can't hear a difference. What you have experienced might have been a lower bitrate on Firefox, which does sound worse.
      It's not that your voice's volume is too low, it's more like there's so much going on in the game's audio that I'm trying to listen to both at the same time and sometimes miss what you were saying (not a native speaker as well here). As I said,it's just a minor gripe.

    Hey I have a question, I've seen bayonetta pros like yoshesque do the 360 air kick and gives a crap ton of damage and combo points but it only does regular damage to me, how do you guys do that?

    • @Saur
      @Saur 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You spin the 360 command on the analogue stick as usual, but instead of just pressing [Kick], you roll your thumb from [Jump] to [Kick]. This causes Bayonetta to perform the aerial 360 kick on the ground.
      Try practising it against a large enemy, such as the Beloved, until you get it down. You need to be right up close to the target for it to be effective, and equipping heavier weapons like the shotguns increases damage. It's insanely good against the Joy enemies; if you bunch them up then land the 360 kick in Witch Time, they get bodied.

    Quite a easy way to replace the totality of the original Bayo 1 "system" as a whole would simply be to a patch that effectively turns Umbran Climax off. Essentially making the Bayo 2 "system" as it exists now the "Umbran Climax system" and then simply copy/pasting the "Bayo1 system" for the toggle which turns Umbran Climax off completely. This should have been totally obvious, but...yeah.
    Of course, there's a variety of way to fix nearly every gripe with the current system simply by gimping Umbran Climax by 30-45% and making enemy health/armor/weight aligned to that with respect to the difficulties. As well as applying audio cues much better than they exist now.
    Beyond that, if they need incentive, release all this as DLC with all the weapons from Bayo 1 included, a harder difficulty and add back in leaderboards with replays for $15-$20.

    Gotta say I'm kinda disappointed it's pretty much the same shit for Bayonetta 2 though. Guess it means there's another Bayo that I need work on jump cancelling Tetsus, I suppose.
    Thanks again, fabulous videos.

    • @Saur
      @Saur 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      WayToTheGrave Many thanks for your support! I feel exactly the same way, it's got to the stage where I don't know how to cover Bayonetta 2 without sounding negative, I don't want to damage the game's reputation. The problem I'm having is that none of the things I am currently covering for Bayonetta 1 exist in Bayonetta 2. Let me give you some examples:
      1. No enemy weight classes. Enemies no longer have a weight class and as such there are no rules regarding how they behave during combos. You have to look at each enemy on a case-by-case basis rather than learn the rules of the player character's system.
      2. Hit reactions are absolute. In the original Bayonetta a large number of her attacks had hit reactions which varied depending on the situation. For example the K of PKP inflicts a completely different hit reaction on the enemy depending on whether the enemy is standing or in a juggle state. Witch Time was fundamental in judging which attacks to use and when, and this all depended on the enemy weight class.
      3. Witch Time no longer amplifies your attacks. Witch Time would also amplify the reactions associated with each hit, so moves which don't have much of an effect in normal time always trigger the appropriate effect during Witch Time. In Bayonetta 2, whether or not an attack has any effect is judged on a case-by-case basis depending on the enemy type. It's a binary ON/OFF rule whether an attack will inflict a hit reaction or not. As Witch Time now no longer amplifies your attack effects, there are no rules to learn, you have to look at each enemy case-by-case.
      4. Enemy armour state does not affect their defence. In Bayonetta 2, the enemy armour only serves as a visual "life meter" for the enemy, having broken armour does not reduce their defensive capabilities. In the original game you could exploit weaknesses when you break an enemy's armour. For example you cannot ensnare the heavily armoured Ardor until you broke his armour, after which you can throw him around as you like. In Bayonetta 2 the only thing you have to worry about when judging when you can or cannot ensnare a larger enemy with the whip is whether or not Witch Time is active, again it's simply a binary ON/OFF decision.
      5. Magic Meter gain rate is unknowable. In the original game you could figure out exactly how much magic meter your actions would gain. Aerial Combos gave a 1.5x boost, enraged enemies gave a 2.0x boost, single Taunt gave 1 orb, Hold Taunt gave 3 orbs, normal Parry gave 1 orb, Perfect Parry gave 3 orbs and so on. But in Bayonetta 2 you cannot tell which actions are actually building meter apart from the vague rule that Wicked Weaves build meter. Then there's the inconsistent meter spend behaviour, for example the Tetsuzanko and Heel Stomp spend 3 orbs of the meter when used normally, but don't spend any meter during Umbran Climax.
      These behaviours make writing a guide incredibly difficult as I cannot identify and convey a grand over-arching rule-set regarding how the game functions, I'll have to look at each enemy on a case-by-case basis. With the original game I can convey the exact rules of the player character's system and exactly how you can best exploit these rules. Each time you identify and learn one of these rules it's a revelation; your approach to the game completely changes and discover huge additional tactical depth within the game system. This is what I'm trying to find in Bayonetta 2, I don't want to give up yet!

Speaking of which would you happen to know of all the attacks not listed at the practice screen? ( the loading screen where you practice) Theres a move I've done that I replicated only one more time and can't figure out. When fighting Grace and glory, I was given a Y+B counter prompt when the lighting one jumped and threw it claws at me. But I can't get it to happen all the time. Is it weapon specific? I couldn't tell if it was because I had durga equipped, another grace/glory's claws as a pick up weapon, or if I just have to be there when they attack like that.

      As for the attack you mention; this is not something I have ever come across, I wasn't aware of any weapon specific counters in the game at all.
      Anyone else have any idea?

    • @Piesareforever
      @Piesareforever 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Just so people know what the attack looks like, when you react to the counter prompt in time, Bayonetta stabs what looks like the enemy's own claws through it and it gets stunned for a while. But the enemy still has it's claws I think so I have no idea what triggers it. Couldn't get it on tape, only ever did it twice. It's pretty unique, I thought it was a glitch because I've never seen an actual prompt to counter mid-fight for anything except for bosses.

      a. Bat within the attack
      b. just get hit
      Glory will start grinding their claws together then throw them at you and you only have about a split second to react to the prompt. Haven't run into it myself, but finding it looks satisfying.

  • @BelieMyBurial

    Seeing as how i am very entry level when it comes to the combat depth of Platinum's games (they're my favorite game studio, but my skill at their games is only slightly above average at best) and reading your comments about Bayonetta 2 (which i cant echo, because i barely understand them tbh), has made me curious. How would you rate PGs other games in terms of mechanical depth? MGR, W101, Anarchy Reigns in particular.
    Maybe even Vanquish?
    ...
    Infinite Space?

    • @Saur
      @Saur 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      BelieMyBurial Thank you very much for asking. I think PlatinumGames' work is in a league of its own, you can't even directly compare their games to the output of other studios because they are masterfully making use of concepts and ideas which nobody else has even touched upon yet.It's far too much for me to go into within the comments section here, but I did write a piece for PlatinumGames which goes into a lot of detail:@2014/05/19/interview-with-saurian-dash-part-1/

    • @BelieMyBurial
      @BelieMyBurial 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many thanks for the response, read both parts and found them to be very insightful! And i agree that Platinum are a league of their own. I actually wish more studios would try to 'copy' their style or adapt their ideas, few games are as satisfying to play as PGs stuff.
      I also have another question if you don't mind.
      The entire 'you reaction time deteriorates as you age'-thing, do you have any experience with that?
      Of course i don't actually know how old you are, so maybe im asking the wrong person altogether, but im in my mid twenties now and according to certain scientific studies my reaction time is only going to get shittier from now on. That depresses me a bit, since im only now developing an interest in faster paced games, such as the ones PG makes, and i do believe fast reaction time might be an important skill to have there.

      BelieMyBurial I'm very glad you enjoyed it! The "problem" with other studios trying to emulate the designs of PlatinumGames' is just that; they are emulating the designs. I have actually has the opportunity to work within the development teams of various action titles and figuring out how Platinum do things is like reverse-engineering alien technology, you don't even know where to begin at times.
      I have not noticed any difference between my reaction speed when I was young and and now. I'm coming up to 40 years old now and if anything I'm actually better than I used to be when I was younger. The main difference I find is that when I was younger I used to play purely on reactions, but these days I view games differently and always look for the way combat is structured first rather than just diving in. I find with this approach I perform far fewer inputs, and the gaps the games present for me to react within feel much wider. This is simply down to learning the game's structure and cutting out all extraneous inputs.
      Have you noticed that when you don't quite feel at one with a set of game mechanics you end up trying to do too much? This is what I noticed about watching friends of mine play The Wonderful 101, as they weren't very familiar with the mechanics they were entering 2 or 3 times as many inputs as I would in each situation, this meant that they had less time to react in any given situation because they have eaten into that window by performing unnecessary commands.
      Once you learn a game system and memorise the enemy attack signposts, these games become like playing music. You aren't reacting to the beat when you are playing an instrument, you "feel" the beat. It's exactly the same with these games; your commands are the melody, and the enemy attack signposts are the percussion.

      ***** This "feels like alien technology" appears in many other genres too, and not only on a company level but for Japanese game development as a whole.
      I feel like they are light-years ahead in game-design compared to western countries. If you know anything about rhythm games, fighting games, action games, shoot em' ups (bullet hells), RPGs, you'll also eventually know how disgustingly terrible most western game developers are compared to them.
      It feels like western developers put 10% of the effort in game-design compared to most Japanese devlopers. (Seriously, it's tragicomic how huge difference there is in competitive fighting games!)
      I'm not a weeaboo who just praises Japan for being Japan, I just play a LOT of games (I wanna be a game-designer already!) and have come to conclusion that whenever a game revolves around player skill and pushing the players to their limits, it's only Japanese devs that matter. I think that it all comes down to Japanese society allowing games and spending your life with video-games more easily than elsewhere (here it's called "wasting" your life instead of spending it :P).
      I have barely touched action games before, but Bayonetta 2 made me research more about them, and now I want to make and design one myself. It would be such a fun and interesting challenge.

    • @Saur
      @Saur 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      jepajei This has been my experience also, there are very few people outside the Japanese studios who actually get this stuff. Don't get me wrong, there are designers out there who do, but it's a rare and massively unappreciated skill.
      Many Japanese studios also prototype the hell out of their games; they design a game system first, then build a game around it once it's decided the mechanics are up to scratch. By contrast, I've had practical experience in studios where they had built every conceivable asset before they had anything close to a solid game system down.
      There is also the constant drive to turn gaming into a more "acceptable" form of entertainment. Look at how the gaming press critique games today; they base their reviews around the non-game elements of a title and only give a passing mention of the actual game mechanics. If they cannot instantly master something, then it's "broken". This I feel is the most pressing matter the gaming medium needs to overcome.

    So from your comments I take it there's not going to be any videos on Bayonetta 2. Maybe at least a comparison vid detailing the most significant changes? If not, oh well, too bad. I suppose with the opinion you have on it it would only end up being a very detailed criticism of Bayo 2.

    Great stuff. Looking forward to the rest of the series. After reading through all the comments I realize now why Bayo2 feels so much easier compared to the first game (nothing but gold and silvers on my first run on hard). I thought that Bat Within was easier to trigger. Good to know I was right.
    Sucks to hear that you won't be doing more game content, but I understand how it goes when you find something else (went to college for game design myself).

    Awesome stuff, Saur. Your channel is the first place I've been recommending to anyone interested in Platinum's action games.
    Quick question. Do you know how to get 4 magic gauges in Bayonetta 2? I've seen this in n472a's videos (watch?v=H3_xGkexwCA), and some of michellegun201's if I'm remembering right. I can't find any info on how to get the extra gauge and it's driving me bonkers.

    • @FuzzyWhisper

      Oh man, I see what you mean! I'm clueless about that too, I'm going to be playing it loads again over the weekend and I will see if I can come up with anything. Might be worth sending michellegun201 a PM asking for information, could it be Bracelet of Time + Eternal Testimony?

      darkgiggsxx Yeah it's a shame, but I'm working extremely hard on this series as it's the last thing I'm doing with gaming. I've given up on the gaming medium now, I thought Bayonetta 2 would be the game to re-ignite my passion for it, but it has had the opposite effect. I did have ambitions to become a game designer, but I've given up on that as I now have a successful career in film distribution.
      This is why I wanted to give the gaming community everything I've learned about these games over the years.

    • @Saur
      @Saur 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man. I have a triple radiator on the roof panel and a dual on the floor of the case. Both are mounted from the outside with small screws supplied with the radiators, the top rad fits perfectly using the existing screw holes of the case. In order to get enough clearance for the PSU cables I had to mount the lower radiator closer towards the front of the case than the existing screw holes allowed. So to get around this I drilled a new set of screw holes.
      Draining is very easy. You see the tap at the bottom of the loop? I just attach a tube to that fitting, open the tap and drain the water into a container.
      I've done a lot to the build since that video. I've got 3 GPUs in the loop now, a new set of radiators and a quad set of Dominator Platinums with the light bar upgrade.

    • @joshuab7890

If you are playing Easy/Automatic, the game plays itself for you.If you are in Normal or above, I suggest leaving one Technique not purchased in the shop and train against the Affinity Angel punching bag (select the "Try" option in the shop) until you are comfortable with the system. You should also play the first Chapter "The Vestibule" repeatedly until you get a feel for combat, and of course there's the Loading Screen Practice Mode where you can memorise Bayonetta's combo strings, and get a feel for her mechanics.
