This video was filmed AFTER I filmed my recent circle hook video, but before I published it. So If I still look like a total dweeb with circle hooks that is because I hadn't seen all of your amazing feedback and suggestions when I filmed this one. This is my first time ever TROUT FISHING with circle hooks.

You'll get the hang of them mate! I probably wouldn't use them so much for this style of fishing as you're in direct contact like a lure, they're a 'set and forget' type hook that was developed by longliners (that part explains the design a lot).

We use circle hooks when teaching kids to fish . They don't pay attention to the bobber, and don't know how to "set the hook"... The bluegill just grab the worm and start swimming away... when the kids feel the tug... they lift the bamboo pole. Only 2 or 3 % gut hooked fish. Great video... FISH ON !

With circle hooks, you lift the rod slightly when you feel weight on it so the hook turns in their mouth and sets properly. With circle hooks if you pull to hard to set the hooks it pops straight out of their mouth.

I rarely use circle hooks but when i do i find having plenty hook exposure and less bait helps with hooking the fish, the more bait the more of a chance the hook doesn’t roll around and get in the corner of the mouth

Just yesterday I caught 3 trout on the small trout hooks. ALL 3 swallowed the hook. One trout was so small...but I had to keep it. I am going to try circle hooks to see how they work. Hopefully I can release the smaller fish without tramatizing them. Some people say you lose trout using them...but thats ok. It will make for a better day of fishing. Thanx for your vid.

I think circle hooks are better on fish species that have a characteristic long run on their first bite. Like mulloway and cod. They work because the constant pressure pulls the hook back through the throat and mouth and the inward facing point of the hook snags the corner of the mouth nearly every time. Fish that mainly tap tap bites like red fin, yellow belly and trout are less likely to hook up this way.

Rookie mistake try carp hooks they are like only a partial circle hook with a really short shank,
I use them for everything and never have a drama,
My first redfin session I got 5 in 40 mins so they definitely work on redfin 👍🏼
Every bite I was able to get the hook set 🙂
If you are interested I have a channel called BushFish'n'Cook 👍🏼
Everything is on there that I have caught with carp hooks
in one vid I did try some long shank hooks but otherwise nothing but carp hooks.
Carp hooks are also super strong as well,
a small hook can still hold a big fish with a size 12 carp hook I got a 8kg carp without hook bend 👍🏼
I was fishing 30lb braid to 20lb flurocarbon leader so I gave the fish a decent go as well 🙂

Awesome video Robbie, really cool to see your giving those a go. The way I think of it is imagine what the hook is doing when its in the fishes throat. the point is not going to nick the fish until the hook starts to change angle slightly, which normally happens when you apply slow pressure and the hook starts to slide out of the fishes mouth and around the lips. So the hook is slightly rolling around the fishes lips as it comes out, and thats when the hook point would find purchase. So as for hooking the fish I like to slowly apply consistent pressure as the fish bights by reeling about as fast as the current and that way once the hook point touches the fishes mouth it has just enough pull on it to dig into the lip. If you just leave the bait where it is and let the fish hook itself you would want to be casting downstream so that the current would apply the pressure needed to hook the fish, but in this video you were casting upstream and the only pressure put against the fish was if the fish ran upstream with the bait. I hope this helps, the best way I can explain is to get you to imagine how that hook is going to behave once its in a fishes throat and what needs to happen from there to hook the fish. Thanks for the video

Loved the video man. A bit late to the party but greetings from the US. I am definitely going to give this a try. I think this is the way to go for native brook trout over here. I don't want to gut hook them ever and they tend to swallow baits a lot. I think the large nightcrawler worm might be working against you though. If you load that circle hook up with maggots or wax worms, I have a feeling it will hook up a lot better. I will be trying this.

Hey robbie, hope all is well mate!
I only use circle hooks when bait fishing with my kids out of the boat in the river for cod, although I do use them, honestly I would say the hook up ratio is higher then a suicide hook or bait hook, but in saying that, I still strike cod on the circle hooks, yes they will hook themselves but honestly its not every time! The main reason i do use them is I tend to find as you said in the video, the side lip hook up rate is good, they tend not to get hooked deep in their throats 👍 happy fishing mate.

Hi mate, circle hooks will revolutionise the way you fish for carp and redfin, normally just leaving the rod in the holder will hook the fish but for some species you still need to strike a little bit to set the hook. Best of luck and enjoyed the vid🤙🎣

Been using circles for trout for many years. Gently lift is the trick and have the hook exposed in the bait so the point can react on the jaw. They have been used in commercial fishing with stagnant long line baiting for ever.

  • @stanwright8583
    @stanwright8583 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'm wondering if you used ½ a worm... don't want to block up the "gap" of the hook so it can't slide into the corner of the fishes mouth. Try this... when you feel the nibble, start raising the rod tip, or start reeling.. With circle hooks we've used, the fish takes the bait, turns and quickly swims away causing the hook to slide into the corner of its mouth. I think you're right, if you just wait for the "fish to hook its self" it will just mouth the worm till it feels the hook and then spit it out. LOL. you need the fish to grab the bait, turn, and swim away.

    Great work Robbie,
    I like these videos,
I think you’ll probably come to the conclusion you kinda just drew anyway. They’re better in some ways and worse in others. For me it’s become a similar discussion as Braid Vs Mono, one does somethings way better but the other does everything pretty well.
I lost confidence in circles after a few quieter trips, trips where you get one or two opportunities at a fish and don’t hook up. It’s probably not the hooks fault but it weighs heavy on my mind, so I decided to go back to what I was confident in working.
Keep up the videos though, you may convert me back by the end. I’m always looking to do less damage to fish I don’t plan to keep anyway.

They are thick do don't bend and the short shank on them really sets bites quick,

Hooked into ever bite without a drama 👍🏼

Carp hooks are also extremely strong on a size 12 carp hook I have got fish upto 8kg on them with no hook bend 👍🏼

Hey Robbie coming from some who uses circle hooks I think the issue your having is your putting the worm on like you would for a normal hook. Try getting a smaller worm or cutting one in half the thread the worm on all the way and try leaving 2-3cms of tail on and leave a tiny bit of the hook exposed so when they bite the tail they get the hook.

If you're bottom fishing they usually swallow the hook anyway, and it's much harder to strike. Great for some species (I use them always when bottom fishing salt water), but not so much for trout.

Very interesting. I defer to you Robbie but isn’t the jury out on ‘setting the hook’ I.e jerking the rob when you get a bite. I always let the fish hook itself regardless of hook type. If you pull the Rod on a bite aren’t you just as likely pulling the hook away from a tentative bite? Maybe I’m wrong and I should be ‘setting’ the hook by jerking it towards me when I get a bite..? Keen on feedback as I wonder about this often. Maybe I would catch more fish if I jerk the rod back as soon as I get a bite? I personally prefer circle hooks because they don’t gut hook, but I don’t catch anywhere near as much as you do maybe I’m going about my fishing the wrong way. Go easy on me, just sharing my thoughts to get some tips😉

Awesome video Robbie. Honestly for my personal preference I don’t like using circle hooks for smaller fish. I mean I’m yet to catch a freshwater species of any kind as it’s hard to get to these spots without a 4WD but in my experience with saltwater if it’s under #3/0 size I’d rather use Tarpon, Bait-holder or O’Shaughnessey hooks. I only use circles when I’m chasing Snapper or WA Dhufish in close and huge #13/0 for Hapuka, 8 Bar Cod and big juicy Rubies. I feel like the self hook up rate just isn’t as effective. But like I said it’s my personal preference and I’m sure there plenty of fishos out there that can catch Freddie’s and Trout all day on circles. Sure patience is key but I like the feeling of a fish chomping down, striking and then watching that rod bend and listening to the reels drag.

Thanks, that is interesting to see. What size are those circle hooks? They look smaller than the smallest ones I usually see at my local. Also, the hooks take getting used to, while you don't necessarily strike to set the hook, I have found sometimes a little contact helps so there's not too much slack line and a very gentle lift will do it so that there is a little tension there for the fish to pull against and hook itself.

Try using a hook 1 size up on what you would normally I find you get more hook ups the fish seem to still get it in

Need to give them slack line that don’t set the hook but keep the rod straight and winde into the fish as if you were pulling it in to check bait is something

Love the videos brother. Coming from Maryland in America and it’s just really cool seeing how it looks and is done down under. Keep up the great work! Just curious though why don’t you use a trout net? They are life savers for me when trying to land a slippery trout. Cheers 🍻

Thanks so much mate. Thanks for watching me from the beautiful U.S.A. I love it over there. I went there in 2001, 5 months before 911. One day I will return.
As for the net, most of the streams that I fish are really small and overgrown, and a net will just get tangled. They're great in larger waterways, and brilliant when I am fishing from my kayak.

Another thing to remember with circle hooks is you need to have plenty of hook exposed if its burried in the bait it wont hook up.

    • @50shadesofgday64
      @50shadesofgday64 3 ปีที่แล้ว

yeah this is a valuable tip. offset circle hooks are prone to spinning the bait if its overloaded or unevenly placed so your bait presentation has to be on point

I think you might just be over processing this 'fish hook themselves' line Robbie. Reckon you would have had at least a dozen using regular hooks and striking like you normally would! Can't say I'm a big fan of circle hooks myself, I find them hard to bait up, particularly in smaller sizes. Maybe the worms were too big for those fish too. Never mind, you have to try out new theories - 'patience grasshopper'.

gday robbie, try using a smaller tail on your bait and not too much worm, tail - the amount of bait not secured to the hook itself. i posted this b4 you said about less of a tail. 12.37 lol , what do they say robbie .. great minds lol

Hey Robbie, your bait is too big. Circle hooks don't work well if the gap between the hook point and shank is full of bait. Also I use them for whiting and if you just lift into the bite rather than jerk it works well.

Circle hooks not so great in small stream where fish are basicly on station and dont swim away far. They work much better in lakes and in larger rivers where the fish are cruising a beat looking for food. They grab bait and swim on setting hook.

Got my first brown today 2kgs on a rainbow trout swim bait,
Watching your video before mine goes up :)
I love circles but I use carp hooks now similar to circle hooks but a slightly different shape,
still seems to mainly get lip hooked every time...
I order them online as never seen them in a store before
Man I wish we had streams with trout like this in my area,
Think I mentioned it before but I'm still fishing a short window of flood escaped trout haha
Getting way to hot now but I think :(
Today was the first one in weeks and I had to move closer to the escape point lol
I still put a little tension on when using circles but I don't really strike
Woah that first one is pretty little rainbow

Have had reasonable luck carp fishing with curcle hooks. Plus you can be lazy and just leave the rod there till they hook themselves and start taking line

  • @trentjacobs4286
    @trentjacobs4286 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Too much bait on the hook mate, they work better with the less is more method, you can “strike” but think more slow pull than quick jab.
You realised that at the 3:45 mark we hen you said you just reeled it.
The thory is the hook will pull out from deeper and as the hook passes the jaws it locks in
They work much better in a set and forget style of fishing with the drag set to a point it will give line but not pull the rod in, in that style of fishing id be using a J style hook

You put a little too much worm on that circle hook as a general rule with circle hooks, you want as much hook exposure as possible. Or else the circle hook won't be able to do its job and go into the corner of the mouth properly and set the hook. I think that's the problem you were having you put too much worm on there.
