I think it’s probably having to do with his depression, which we now know after that video. pacing sometimes helps distract from depressive moods/episodes. might not be that, but I also think that’s why phil was concerned about the sleeping problems (oversleeping and insomnia are both symptoms of depression).

people always go on about how much dan loves phil but people seriously underestimate how much phil loves dan. he is so genuinely concerned about him, and not only in this, on the radio show there was a thing where dan was looking sad and dint want to talk bout his bad week and phil said "okay we'll talk about it later then." He showed up to SITC even when he wasn't on the panel and didn't have to come to support dan-but he did- and honestly- you don't do those things for someone whom you don't love very deeply. (btw-i dont ship phan as a romance- i love their friendship so much and i love that they can be so close as just friends- but if they were in a romance i would be completely supportive although i don't think they are in one)but anyway, moving on- Phil loves Dan so deeply-as much as Dan loves him- and as a person who is a LOT like phil- i can honestly say that i am so sure that he really loves his best friend. The reason that people say that dan loves phil more than phil loves dan is because phil i much better at hiding his emotions. I recognize this because i also do this a lot- and i feel like a lot of people do. But you cant willingly live with a person for that long without loving them. And i firmly believe that Phil loves Dan as much as Dan loves Phil. Dan is not as good as hiding his emotions as phil i guess so you can see that he clearly loves phil through facial expressions ect- but for phil its a bit more complicated to see that. But it leaks out it little cracks- like when he genuinely is concerend for dans health, or complains about not seeing him for ten hours, or makes hot chocolate for him. Phil is quite indirect when confronting people for the fear of offending them, but this will affect his health if he keeps things in all the time. Think more of yourself Phil!

can we just take a moment and realize how exhausting that must be for Dan, i mean i know he's trying to brush it off and be like "no no, i like pacing around my room at 5am thinking about the inevitability of death" but idk just from my own personal experience dealing with the exact same problem, its never been a pleasurable experience. & then for me, if it gets to the point of actively moving around, its not a good time at all. at fucking all. those thoughts get really really dark and twisted if you get sucked into that void for long enough and the longer you're there the harder it gets to get out of it and it can so easily spiral out of control and it just makes me really sad hearing him talk about it because i go through it quite often and its the scariest place my mind takes me and will often end in a panic attack/ pacing around quietly sobbing/ literal absolute terror. i can only hope he doesn't get it that bad because he is a precious soul and nobody should ever go through this, especially as often as makes it seem.

+Kaylene Orr I do that to sometimes but for me it mostly ends with crying quietly in the toilet and swollen bloodshot eyes that I explains by claiming I stayed up all night to read fanfictions. I can see that Phil's clearly worried and wants to help. But I can understand Dan brushing it off, too. Because although I don't necessarily enjoy it, I still think it's one of the traits defining my character. It's been happening for so long that it's just something I do. Some people put on their socks before bed or send their girlfriend a goodnight message and I have a mental breakdown. I'm okay with it. I can live with it. And if I were put in a situation where my best friend+roommate asks me to stop and tells me it's not normal human behaviour I would probably react the same way Dan did. Hopefully, they sorted it out somehow. I think that, more than anything, hit Dan really hard and Phil looked like it troubled him as well.
There is a mirror in Phil's room, next to his bed, right beside a place where you can plug a straightner(Spell it however you want) in. If Dan did it any other place he would have to stand up, and we all know that he is too lazy for that. So that is why he does his hair in there. It's a good way to talk about the little irritating things, at least they're communicating and keeping the friendship alive, other than burying it all down inside them.
I could feel the awkwardness...I felt like at some point, they were a bit annoyed at each other but tried to hide it...it was a really nice video though, and yeah...it might have been goof for them to talk about things they felt bothered or guilty about.
They only have one pair of straightners, Phil used it last and Dan had to straighten his hair there so there wouldn't be a hassle moving it and plugging it in and moving it AGAIN.
Generally when you're depressed you don't give a shit about why you're here or what the world is or what the meaning of life is. Because everything looses meaning. The feeling is sucked out. Existential crisis is kind of the opposite...Dan seems like the type who is so aware of himself constantly that he can't turn his brain off. Most people don't have to - they just contemplate the universe and space and time for a bit, and then forget about it. We have to, simply to get through the day. The 5am thing is probably just when he is alone in the house, Phil is asleep, and so his brain can't push out the thoughts in the way it can during the day when he has distractions. Existential thoughts can be huge and terrifying, but they can also be liberating and humbling. Just my 2 cents on the whole clinical depression discussion.
I am so much like Phil. I'm stubborn and always think my way is better (even if we all know it's not) and I need things done my way. I freak out and get anxious when someone isn't ready to leave 10 minutes before he actual time to leave.

can we just take a moment and realize how exhausting that must be for Dan, i mean i know he's trying to brush it off and be like "no no, i like pacing around my room at 5am thinking about the inevitability of death" but idk just from my own personal experience dealing with the exact same problem, its never been a pleasurable experience. & then for me, if it gets to the point of actively moving around, its not a good time at all. at fucking all. those thoughts get really really dark and twisted if you get sucked into that void for long enough and the longer you're there the harder it gets to get out of it and it can so easily spiral out of control and it just makes me really sad hearing him talk about it because i go through it quite often and its the scariest place my mind takes me and will often end in a panic attack/ pacing around quietly sobbing/ literal absolute terror. i can only hope he doesn't get it that bad because he is a precious soul and nobody should ever go through this, especially as often as makes it seem.
I think that's why Phil was worrying so much. I would worry too. I mean, it's not something that you casually bring up, so I think that Phil was glad that he could acknowledge it here.

+Kaylene Orr I do that to sometimes but for me it mostly ends with crying quietly in the toilet and swollen bloodshot eyes that I explains by claiming I stayed up all night to read fanfictions.
I can see that Phil's clearly worried and wants to help. But I can understand Dan brushing it off, too. Because although I don't necessarily enjoy it, I still think it's one of the traits defining my character. It's been happening for so long that it's just something I do. Some people put on their socks before bed or send their girlfriend a goodnight message and I have a mental breakdown. I'm okay with it. I can live with it. And if I were put in a situation where my best friend+roommate asks me to stop and tells me it's not normal human behaviour I would probably react the same way Dan did.
Hopefully, they sorted it out somehow. I think that, more than anything, hit Dan really hard and Phil looked like it troubled him as well.
There is a mirror in Phil's room, next to his bed, right beside a place where you can plug a straightner(Spell it however you want) in.
If Dan did it any other place he would have to stand up, and we all know that he is too lazy for that. So that is why he does his hair in there. Proof is in one of the 'Day in the life' videos, where Phil is using the straightner and his mirror to get ready. Amen, I have contributed to the comments.

Generally when you're depressed you don't give a shit about why you're here or what the world is or what the meaning of life is. Because everything looses meaning. The feeling is sucked out. Existential crisis is kind of the opposite...Dan seems like the type who is so aware of himself constantly that he can't turn his brain off. Most people don't have to - they just contemplate the universe and space and time for a bit, and then forget about it. We have to, simply to get through the day. The 5am thing is probably just when he is alone in the house, Phil is asleep, and so his brain can't push out the thoughts in the way it can during the day when he has distractions. Existential thoughts can be huge and terrifying, but they can also be liberating and humbling. Just my 2 cents on the whole clinical depression discussion.

Dan's video about his depression just came out yesterday, and I remembered this video. I kind of thought before that is what the pacing and sleeping problems were about. It's good that he got help with it, and felt comfortable making a video about his experience.
