I must say I have come to enjoy listening to this channel. Jerad talks about steel treatment a lot and I appreciate that. Smaller companies are making some killer stuff right now and it's good to hear someone talk about the blade quality since heat treat can make or break the performance of a steel.
I have a Ti Tribeca as well and love it. Best GiantMouse knife and that includes ones made by Reate. Fit and finish is excellent and the detent on ALL methods of deployment is absolute perfection. The Italians have stepped up their game and are killing it! Absolutely worth the 285 and I recommend it for those that want a Oz Rozie or Koenig Mini Arius but don’t want to spend the money or can’t afford them.
I modified my ace grands lockbar access with a piece of sandpaper the ace grand is one of my all time favorite knives but I plan on picking up a Tribeca great video man 👍
Just a few that are consistently putting out knives with it in the optimal range of 63-64 HRC (which is arguably the best range for Magnacut in terms of large batch production) would be Hogue, Chris Reeve Knives, Spyderco, Protech and American Bladeworks. You'll notice all the companies I listed are USA production, and that's mainly because Chinese companies, although exceptional in design, fit and finish, and their overall consistency rate of putting new knives on the market, the one area that most, if not all, lack in is heat treatment of their super steels; and Magnacut is no different. Early on Hogue had some problems with their Magnacut, but they took the customers complaints seriously and within like a month or so their new batches of Deka's were excellent and all coming in at 62.5-64 HRC. I had mine tested a few days after the purchase and my stonewashed (uncoated) Deka tested at 63.6 HRC twice, and I consider it one of my best performing EDC's in terms of steel quality.
Been thinking about grabbing that tribeca. Probably returning the berge blades iron mutt. The iron mutt is good looking, but that’s about it. I hate closing the knife, it’s just not smooth disengaging the lock bar
I’m between the mutt and the tribeca currently and this is EXTREMELY useful info to see. I love the look of the mutt but I’ve seen some reviews say the detent is mush
I Have been enjoying the Denim Micarta Tribeca since April. This one just has more expensive scales, but is built the same. The Denim Micarta Tribeca looks and feels better, and has the same action. But, that's just my 2-cents.
I love love the ace grands. The design just speaks to me. Absolutely melts in my hand. 1 in vandis 4, 2 in Elmax and 1 in M 390. HOWEVER.. They have the softest detent of all my untold dozens of knives!
Yea man I LOVE my Ti ace atlier it’s my fav GM design. Mine has a great detent. I have heard of the full size grands having soft detents tho I’d bet they used the same size detent ball for both so it’s better on the mini
More stainlessness, more toughness with slightly less edge retention then s45vn. That is considering your running the 61hrc MC at the same edge angle as you are the 61hrc s45vn. The toughness advantage of MC would allow you to easily run the MC edge angle significantly lower and in that case the MC edge retention would be significantly higher. Like say your running 61rc MC at at edge angle of 13dps and the 61rc s45vn at 17dps... in that case your edge retention of MC would be possibly as much as double what the s45vns would be. But if we are speaking on the same knives blade with one being in s45vn at 61 and one being in MC at 61 with both sharing the same grind and edge bevel angle.. then you can expect more stainlessness and substantial toughness increases of the MC over the s45vn with the s45vn having a slight edge retention advantage. Realistically in real world use, I don't you would be able to tell a difference of the s45vns projected edge retention advantage.
@@NeevesKnives i must have just got lucky. I didn't have any of the tool marks on mine and it just works flawlessly. The only thing i notice is that if i sit there and reverse flick it open a lot it seems a bit more difficult to break the detent when using the flipper tab and it starts to hurt my finger. But after a few flipper tab openings it's back to normal and doesn't feel hard to initiate the flick at all. I just chalked it up to needing to be broken in. I haven't adjusted anything. The factory edge is off the charts sharp with no sign of slowing down. I've never had a blade in elmax but i have the osprey in m390. The sharpness seems at least on par with that but I'm no expert lol. I just go by feel cutting paper and plastic. Both blades are laser beams. Cheers! Love the content!
@@NeevesKnives i think they knocked it out of the park with the burlap micarta. the canvas micarta looks great on the elmax version. i tend to prefer the burlap look. why do you say it's not as good? was it because you said it had a stronger detent on the elmax version? or blade steel?
Tribeca is fire. If it wasn't for the sharp jiping on liner I wouldn't have any gripes. T6s suck but their tooled really really good atleast. Even carbadized the lockbar.
Jared and Kara can i ask you both an honest question how do both keep your passion for knives from fizzling out especially after being around knives constantly for years now? How truly do you keep the excitement going.

This mouse makes a stone cold killer squeak. Ive had the same set of miracle blade kitchen set for a long while now. And with all the serrations i have no idea how to sharpen them. I should invest in some nicer kitchen knives. And thanks for the nitro b explanation.
Maybe not, but they put a damn good edge on my Micarta Biblio. Sliced a sliver out of the tip of my thumb, was crazy how I didn't feel it and how thin the piece removed was.
Magnacut doesn't need a top tier heat treat, and frankly it's beating s30v in every respect aside from MAYBE ease of sharpening given equal decent heat treats.
Funny how personal experience can differ. I have my Tribeca for about 3 months now (Denim Micarta) and I like it and use it often, but there are 2 things about it I really don't like on it. The first thing is the liner lock access. For me it's plain terrible and probably the worst of all my folding knives. The second is the blade centring, it's almost impossible to do in a civilised way. I have to bend the blade by force in order to get it reasonably centred. Just this morning I took the whole knife apart, cleaned it and checked the liner lock spring tension, but to no avail. It's a good knife but not a great one (for me).
What the actual f your bending the blade to try and Center it🤦🏻 Now just sit back and think if you have already tried all the numerous techniques for centring a blade and I mean all of them ! Did you now that if you still can’t get it done like with the old Benchmade griptilian that was exactly the same have a guess what you did too fix that? Do you think bend the blade! Or perhaps you might like too try bending the handle ever so slightly,,,, it’s easy to find out which one is out of whack just by laying them on a perfectly flat surface you might just fine the scales are warped or if you’re very unlucky the blade is if that is the case SEND IT BACK.
I know how to centre a blade. I have many folders and have centred many of them the 'proper' way. This 'Tribeca' blade would not respond to proper adjusting methods. It will always go back to the crooked position it came out of the box. Sending it back is an option but a pain in the arse.@@SkunkPunch73
Got it, love it, however... the edge they put on it literally does not cut paper. And oh, that lock, so bad. It's an impressive piece of kit and I want to love it like I lusted after Sofia Loren, but it doesn't cut and the lock is terrible. I'm good though. I'm going to re-do the edge myself because what they sent me is just bad. Whomever was charged with sharpening my knife spent too much time at the espresso counter that day.
