Dune 2 is a masterpiece. A masterclass in filmmaking. every single frame in this movie is jaw dropping. Greig Fraser is one of the greatest DOP of our time, a true master of lighting. watching Dune 2 was like witnessing an astronomical event, something similar to a solar eclipse. It literally felt like i was transported to Arrakis. Thank you boys for this amazing interview 🤌. Every single department in this film has given the movie industry and cinema lovers a masterclass in film making. A hollywood blockbuster that feels like an indie movie at times.
I saw it yesterday and the whole movie I was like: “I want to pause and print this to hang on my wall!” Every shot, a masterful picture, the compositions are sublime. Epic.
@@JanStrojil exactly, Denis and Greig have crafted every single frame like a painting. If we were to pause anywhere in this movie randomly, it would be a beautiful wallpaper.
Greig is my favorite cinematographer working today. I honestly have no idea how he creates these shots. Ever since Rogue One I've always been on the lookout for the next movie Greig is shooting. Of course his work on Rogue One and the Batman and Dune is incredible but I also love how he shot Lion. If you haven't seen Lion go watch it right now.
Lion is the type of movie really well suited to Greig's intimate style of shooting. Well worth a look. Also check out "Killing Them Softly" from 2012. I'd love to see a spinoff from that movie digging deeper into Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn's characters. I LOVE those 2 actors in practically everything they're in.
It‘s just a crime, that there is still no 4K UHD of Dune Part One with the enhanced aspect ratio for the IMAX scenes! 😢😢😢 Watched both Dune parts last week in IMAX (incl. 1:1.43) and it was the best cinematic event I‘ve ever had! Now all I‘m wishing for is Messiah and of course the enhanced aspect ratios for the home releases. Every Nolan release has it (also Warner), so why not the spectacular Dune masterpieces? I just don’t get it! 🤯
As an artist first, I eat these conversations up. You guys got so much more out of Greg than other interviews I’ve seen of his. I learned a lot and I just appreciate the art behind the end piece.
Phenomenal interview, guys! Greig Fraser is hands down, my favorite cinematographer working today. His work on Rouge one, Dune part 1 and 2 are truly epic. As a huge Batman fan, I love Fraser work on the Batman. Specially the car chase scene, Its one of my favorite scene in a batman movie. I can't wait to see what Greig and Matt Reeves have up their sleeves for the Batman part 2!
What a brilliant interview with such intelligent questions and insightful passionate answers. Thank you. I'm here for Dune but have to add that Greig's beautiful work on Jane Campion's film Bright Star is absolutely breathtaking. A jewelbox of a film.
Not to take away at all from Denis, but the way Fremen ride the worm and the reason the worm doesn't descend below the sand is all described in detail in the books. Denis' visualization of it is genius, but the ideas and the physicality of the worm avoiding sand-bourne irritation was invented by Herbert pre-1965. What was absolutely novel in Dune Part 2 was the realization of the sensitive tissue of under the rings. Incredible visual storytelling.
Dreams are really important in the world of Dune and this movie is the result of Denis Villeneuve dreaming about it for almost 40 years since he first read the book when he was 13 years old. Ideas and experiences that are really personal are a great recipe for great cinema and this movie feels as personal as it can get. All the quiet and intimate moments in between moments among the characters, when we can literally hear the sound of the wind transport us to the beautiful sunsets and binary eclipses of Arrakis 🌑.
Great interview guys, quality questions & discussion! I learnt a lot. I was lucky enough to see Dune Part 2 last night and it was truly immersive & transformative. An absolute new benchmark/masterpiece. Congrats to all crew and cast on a phenomenal experience!
This is one of a handful of movies that I have ever seen, like Terminator 2 when the truck drives off the overpass or the T-Rex attack in Jurassic Park, where I was completely in the thrall of just the image itself. It is absolutely astounding in the theater.
As a reader of the book, Greg killed it. I can’t really remember when a cinematographer is as famous as cast or just below it. Can’t wait for his visuals for the Batman part 2 😤😭
If seen tons of interviews with the cast and crew of Dune 2 and they are all beset by impostor syndrome and the most humble group of people in Hollywood Makes me feel better that the feeling never goes away no matter how great you perform in life
Happy week of 300 episodes Boys you deserve this and so much more I still remember the meet up for the 100 episode going to listen to this Friday afternoon along with the 300 episode I already got my ticket for dune 2 and so excited
Thanks gents for this interview. Great questions. 👍 Greig is a talented DP, his background in itself is cool; I kept wondering what’s beyond that door! 😂 One of the best storytellers using images, who clearly loves his job. Respect to the guy who knows the limits of the tools used (the volume vs practical set). Looking forward to seeing Dune 2✌️
9:58 you and me both grieg. The whole time I watched part 2, I couldn't help but analyze each shot, in each ratio, wondering how they could have done it. So beautiful, can't wait to be there
Thank you to this cinematographer.Just got out of the theater ….I immediately thought dune messiah …I just can’t believe how special Dune part 2 is.😢 I’m emotionally a mess.
Absolutely, I finally got to see Part Two in IMAX and it was astonishing. Greig Frazer's work shines so brightly. The double sunset on Arrakis is just a small example of his countless mastery.
Greig outdoes himself with each successive film and has been doing that consistently since Zero Dark Thirty. Work on Dune blew my mind, work on The Batman even more, and work on Dune: Part Two even more than that!
Greig, is my cousin from Melbourne Australia. How professional is he !! i am not saying this as he is Family, i am saying this because he really is. .......
love Greig Fraser, but why didn't he mentioned VFX or CGI once, even when being directly asked how he went about shooting a scene that is so VFX heavy like the worm riding scene? seems really dismissive to not mention the VFX artists or at least the VFX supervisor like Paul Lambert in a scene that is almost 80% computer generated.
@@alexanderclaylavin Greg Fraiser knows more about VFX than 99% of the people making the movie because as a DP he must know how to shoot for shots that will be used afterwards for VFX and CGI post production scenes which in this case is the majority of the movie, as is the majority of his latests movies.
Didn't like Dune 2 very much as a whole - script is just so thin compared to books and hold no logic (from outcast to messiah and galaxy legend in 6 month - rrright). But first scene - one shot of Paul and fremen on the sand took my breath away and Frasers work is so so good in this movie. He is one of the best today, such inspiration.

The cast is terrible for the most part. Even with the good actors they got in under utilized roles. Zendaya and Chalamet are especially bad. How Greig Fraser didn't get a nomination for best cinematographer for the Batman still shocks me
That was true robbery!!!!
Right, that’s one of the best looking films ever
Absolutely, the lens work alone was towering stuff- incredible looking movie.🏆
Robbery but I guess a person can’t win twice
@@KingKhupacabra unless your name is not Emmanuel Lubezki
Just that shot he got of Paul, with the hood over his head, crossing the desert and fremen parting like the Red Sea when he approaches is astonishing
