    Very good demo. I too is from Louisiana, (henderson) Just built my own hoop net, about 30´´ by 7 ft. I was not sure about my throats but I see yours are identical to mine, so that pretty much answers my question how good they catch, I didn,t have a chance to put mine out yet, had to head back offshore for 28 days. Thanks

    Great video! Thanks but I am having a hard time understanding the purpose of the main line and how it actually works in the water. Do you have any videos of you actually fishing and emptying the nets? Thanks man. Good job.

    How have you done with the commercial fishing in Desalmonds?

    Todd, I learned how to sew nets a long time ago from my old father-in-law. I started off by making gill nets than turtle cages. I always wanted to make a hoop net but never had a patteren till I bought an old one for 20.00 . My first one came out pretty darn good but I did my throat different and I saw yours and they are identical. Once you learn how to sew, you can make all kinds of stuff including hammocks and yard stuff for the wife. Maybe. One day we can get together and I can show you, Jeff

    Big commercial nets are used in big rivers with big current and giant fish they don’t use bait and requires heavy weights and big floats for the lines

    i have about 6 net,s they are.. 6 rings...3 ft..ft open end....tied in by hand...everyone need to learn that..use weights,both front and back rail road woks real good...i been doing this for 40 years...and fish the rivers a lot,s because the river will set ..your net for you.. also used panty hose for years,, did not know what a bait bag was...lol... cottonseed meal.. and cheese together i bury the cheese in the winter and it smells rough.. but have taken ...a lot of 60# and 1 87 lb flats on this...but just about too old to do it anymore...but i sure love doing it... enjoy it while your son...

    You can set it in deep water. To set the poles, look on youtube for crappie stake beds. you will see a pole driver to set the poles. To retrieve the nets, set up as shown, you will need a grapple hook on a rope to catch the net or the line.

  • @emilytgolden
    @emilytgolden 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    im thinking of catfishing...i know a good bit..just a few question?how deep of water is correct for this? because if you have pole then you cant go that deep and how do you get ur net out of the water to get the fish out if its tied? you leave a bit of slack?

  • @littlemanoo
    @littlemanoo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can use a crawfish sack for bait bag get some metal shower curtain hooks tie it in the middle

  • @littlemanoo
    @littlemanoo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can use cheese livers dog food for bait.Put one bag of bait right inside the first inside hole and one in the back tue a string across and suspend the bait in the middle if you don’t the fish outside the net will pull your bait bag outside the net.

    @teegid where did you learn how to make them? I have not been able to find any good informationon that. I am looking into doing one just to learn how to. I do not really need anymore as I have 12 nets right now.

    I use 2 bags one by the entrance inside the slit and one in the back the front tied to the top of the hoop and the back tied across the 2nd to last hoop with a shower hook holding the bag in the center if the bag gets pulled out the trap no good.

    I am a new beginner with hoop nets . I just bought a 5 ring net and need info on how far from the bank to set it and is there a certain depth to set in ? I normally fish with trotline but wanted to try and catch bait fish and eatin fish .

    @landonwooldridge123 No I do not. I do live in back Vacherie though. You may see me fishing around the camps in the upcoming monthes as the bluegills go on the beds. I will be fishing almost everyday I am off of work there and in the Vacherie canal for them. I only run my hoop nets every 2 weeks.

    I invented this net back in 1950 ! Rolling Fork,Ms .WE USED COTTON TWINE ,wood hoops 3ft front 3 throat called it the Atomic throat .i later switched from flat flue to finger throat about the size of 1in opening that would open up to 2ft and go back to 1 in

      Did you ever catch any mullet in one? I've always thought it could be done. I catch that mullet the old fashioned way, the way you probably did before you came up and started inventing nets lol! But obviously that can only be done in certain conditions. If I ever find a legal way to regularly catch mullet that doesn't involve a castnet I'll be in heaven.

    best nets come from memphis net and twine and the best bait for hoop nets are cotton seed mill cake and u messed up a perfect net u didnt have to cut a hole in it the fish can be dumped back out of the throats as you pull net in the boat lay ur hoops down then once u get the tail where the fish are over in to the boat you just pick all the hoops up together and the fish fall out short sweet and simple my uncles dad has been commercial fishing for almost 50 years and does it all from boxes trot lines to gill nets and hoop nets

    • @toddrodrigue
      @toddrodrigue 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way I show, I do not disconnect the net from the main line when emptying. all I do to empty is rotate the net, dump out the fish, place another bait bag in and drop overboard. Using this method allows us to put 2 or 3 nets back to back and makes it easy to change out just one net at a time for cleaning. There are many ways to fish with these nets. Down here cotton seed cake is hard to get and expensive. Regular soybeans and fermented crack corn, or cheese, is what works well.

    • @robertbowers8893
      @robertbowers8893 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ahh gotcha yea we disconnect because usually we move the nets around but yea i guess if u dont disconnect the main line that works

    Q: how is that designed better (more advantage) than regular fish trap with TWO (2) entrances/openings? People said more openings is better b/c it lets fishes/crabs more easy to get inside to be trapped, and some fish/crabs give up and go away if they take too long to find entrance? I think for a while, believe the best advantage of this design is having LONGER STORAGE area to collect more catches, with 2 throats make the catch harder to exit the trap. Other than that, seems this trap is NOT as efficient than regular trap with 2 openings. PLS ADVISE and give a deep thoughtful insights/analysis of this design vs regular design. Thanks. THINGS LIKE THAT SO LOW TECH should be MADE IN CHINA with THICKER/stronger net (just make sure stronger net wire use), will save consumer tons of $ - expect price under $50 if made in China and most Asian are smart in Math, Science, Engineering, so this is no brainner - too easy to DIY or invent. I design/invent similar since I was a child in poverty countryside - able to put fish/food on the table use insightful brain to design/solve problems:)! BTW, I hate CA with overregulations, so many things are illegal, except stupid socialist Dumbercrats politicians are busy only to make laws help illegal immigrants at the cost of moral, honest, hard working citizens like myself too - legal tax payer citizens are subsiding those illegal, immoral, lazy, stupid, entitled groups! U ask why we try to do some FISHING fun or put some fish on family table requires tons of CA stupid laws, over 189 pages of trap/fish game codes & also need to tax a fish/trap EXAM to get a license to have FREEDOM OF USA & we just want some fishing fun + put foods on table, why make complicated laws against the honest, hard working, legal citizens? Why Landlords are screwed & hated with all rental laws against landlords, why make laws favor the stupid, weak, poor, gay, illegals? Illegal cross board illegal, when they break the laws at 1st so illegals are criminals to begin with! Our CA liberal politicians are TRAITORS to sell out country/State or legal citizens/tax payers out to kiss ass illegals/immorals/weak/stupid/poor ones b/c they're busy make laws help the illegals, the immoral, the weak (tenant or disabled people always use many store for inaccessible=no disabled parking/door, etc)? Anyway, get back to do a deep comparison of both trap design & share. THX:)

      Not too sure about that because a buddy of mine catches 8,000-10,000 lbs a day in the same area this guy is from. He does somethings similar and some different but whatever works for you is really what matters at the end of the day. Something that may work for you for one fish also might not be so good for the same fish in a different area or time of the year.

      Well in South Louisiana that would end up being unhealthy for you if you were caught. Not to mention illegal.
