      I thought same. Maybe we'll hear how many would have been on it.. one article said 31,000 cars per day. The CA 1989 earthquake happened during peak rush hour - I remember photos of cars mashed under the collapsed 2-level Nimitz Freeway .. over 40 people died/were crushed.

    Dundalk resident here, Turner Station and this bridge are right in my backyard. I go over this bridge twice every day of the work week. I'm in complete and utter shock, still haven't fully processed this. Woke up to the sound of rescue helicopters flying over my house this morning. Unfortunately I am learning that hard lesson. After mum passed 4 years ago my 1 sister tried to forge a relationship with me but she had given me so much grief most of my life I told her I am perfectly ok not interrupting for the remainder of our existence & the next time we see one another may be when we are deceased or dying. She apparently fell ill 2 years ago & I refused to budge until I learned she was moved to a hospice. When I went to go see her she was on a morphine drip & already transitioning. She passed within 48 hrs of cancer. It's been almost 2 years & I have not forgiven myself for being so cruel & stubborn & the grief some days is just unbearable. I am so mentally stuck it's unbelievable. I am supposed to be making an appointment to see a therapist.

      I’m from Fernandina Beach FL. Another beautiful little island. When I was about 12, my uncle had a graduation ceremony with the Navy Seals and my family went to support his success. Anyways, I know things are a far cry today from how they were in the late 80’s but when we visited I fell in love with Coronado Island. Having grown up on the little southern most sea island of the east coast; Coronado Island felt like home but way cooler. I remember seeing the succulent ladened landscaping along the highway overpass and being so enamored at how lush and beautiful everything was. I fell so in love that I had set myself the goal of being able to move there one day. Unfortunately, life had different plans for me. I’m grateful for the experience and for the fact that I am so fortunate to be a Florida native.

    I've really been enjoying the local news coverage of this event. It beats the national coverage far and away. I like hearing the local insights, particularly Scott sharing just how personal this tragedy is for him and so many of those who live around the bridge. National News shies away from broadcasting REAL locals who speak like REAL people. All people, no matter how they sound or speak, or what opinion they have to share, deserve to be heard--and this is what local news provides us. Thank WUSA9 and the team for your hard work!
    I'm from Chattanooga, TN. We have a lot of waterways here, too, surprisingly; in fact prior to TVA constructing the Chickamauga Dam, flooding was a frequent catastrophe that leveled the town every few decades. There's three bridges crossing the TN River (also known as the Mississippi River) into Chattanooga. One of them carries interstate connecting GA to TN (ATL to Chatt), as well as Nashville to Chatt to Knoxville. I can only imagine if any one of our beautiful bridges were to fail. Anyway, that to say this really strikes a chord in my heart. Particularly being a Namesake bridge, after a man who proceeded the forefathers in his belief in the dream of independence. May this bridge be rebuilt, as the Governor said, in memory of the bridge that came before and the people who died. I hope that Baltimore can rally and build a bigger and even more beautiful Francis Scott Key Bridge! Baltimore Strong ❤‍🩹

(I don't watch that channel so never saw him before.) I appreciate your other comments, too. I've lived in Baltimore for decades, but in my heart I'm a Cincinnatian through and through. Born and bred there, I always loved our views of the beautiful Ohio R. My hometown has at least four bridges, maybe five. Unless you fly, crossing some Ohio River bridge is the only way to access the South. I understand your feelings about your Chattanooga bridges. I hope the new Key Bridge is built much, much stronger. Baltimore is the 3rd largest shipping port in the continental USA and that bridge is a major connecting point to I-95 that is mainly used by trucks hauling gasoline and hazardous materials. The bridge and port is a lifeline for the east coast and now the port is shut down for the foreseeable future until the wreckage is cleared and that could take months.

    I am curious about who is the pilot of the ship?? Based on several interviews about this tragedy, there must have been about 25 or less crew members on board which is normal for this type of container vessel. Also, the port of Baltimore and US coast guard according to maritime experts (retired captain/pilot and maritime lawyer interviewed) do not require or mandate tugs under or near the bridge. However, tugs could have definitely prevent this tragic incident.

    How was it that if the bridge was so vulnerable that one impact to a pier would bring it down, why were there no redundancies? Shouldn't there have been tugs to support the ship till it got PAST the bridge? And why were there no redundancies on the bridge structure itself? Shocking how one impact brought it down that quickly.

    This is just so sad. I've lived in this area all my life and drove over the Key Bridge hundreds of times. My uncle is a former Baltimore Harbor pilot for 40 plus years, now retired. He would be one of the people who boarded these massive ships to bring them in and out of the harbor. I talked to him, and he said it was the power going out. Once you lose power, you can not steer the ship. They even dropped the anchor to try and stop or slow down the ship.

    • @blitzmom2674
      @blitzmom2674 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If the bridge was so vulnerable that one impact could bring it down, why weren't tugs accompanying the ship in case the ship developed problems? Sure it would add expense to the ship, but think of those lives. And the impact to Baltimore and the port and the cargo and shipping in the interim.

    • @NoelG702
      @NoelG702 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @blitzmom2674 Tugs did bring it out to a certain distance. It's on the ship traffic data. No bridge would have withstood a direct hit on a main supporting pillar from a ship that large. That's not just me saying that, but lots of structural engineer experts. The bridge was completed in 1977. Cargo ships are double the size today that they were in the early 70's when the bridge was planned and building started.

    I've noticed the media has refrained from blaming responsibility for this tragedy, on the ships Singapore crew. Singapore is a self governed independent country with huge trade ties, to China. But the ship could be privately owned, with Singapore, registration. There have also been rumors about contaminated shipping fuel, causing other ships steering to similarly, be affected. How and when was this reported, and investigated? Hopefully the NTSB will be able to get to the bottom of this accident. It would really be unfair, for the American taxpayer to carry this burden, alone. Condolences and sincere concern, for everyone affected by this horrific, incident.
