My Drill Sgt asked me why I joined. I was going to be homeless 2 weeks had I not enlisted. The Army provided me with EVERYTHING I NEEDED to survive. Some may laugh, who cares if they do. I needed it and I am grateful I did.

I took care of my mommy until she passed away and the day she passed away everyone said I was not grieving I am still grieving 6 years later she was my best friend
I can totally relate to this, my brother, tough guy military dude, thought I am some kind of alien, my aunts and uncle thought I am some sort of heartless monster but when you are the only one there in the hours which matter the most, not the final ones but the ones before that, when shit hits the fan, you know whats coming. You are prepared and have to tuck away your feelings for other things like what happens to the house, to the dogs, to the disabled brother that needs to be taken care of in my case. Who pays and organizes the burial. This feeling though, I think, will never go away. See it as a bittersweet reminder of your loved ones. At least I try to do that.
