Hi Trophy, we had the 03 Latour last weekend and thought the same (a bit disappointed). Next time around, we will try it with heavy food.

JImmy: thank you for viewing my video and your comment. I think 03 is still pretty young so definitely needs food. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!

Great video. Interesting to hear you review wines from top producers in these so-so vintages. It seems that the better the winery, the more consistency there is in terms of quality from vintage to vintage. How do good vintages and off-vintages compare at the level of the First Growths? Would a 2005 Mouton or 2009 Latour necessarily be that much better? Thanks!

Noahcap: great assessment! Personally I think what distinguishes the great vintages of first growths is their longevity. They can keep at their plateau level for many years. Also intensity of flavors is at a different level compared to off vintages

Hey Trophy, good video as always. When you keep wines open over multiple days how do you store them? Do you use the original cork or another device? Do you put them in the refrigerator or keep them out on the counter?

doublewides: thank you for your continued support. I generally just use an air pump to pump out the air and then store in the fridge. I find overnight is usually OK but with some wines, degradation does occur after more than 24 hours. I have also sealed with original cork and as long as you drink within 24 hours, usually no big difference in taste. Cheers!

Could you compare the styles of Latour and Mouton, having drank multiple vintages from both? Ive always read that Latour is the most backward and brooding of the first growths, while Mouton is the most fleshy, exotic, and opulent of them which is closer to a New world style in regards to ripeness of fruit and intensity of oak. From your experience, do these descriptions corroborate with your taste buds? Thanks!

Spiritchaser: everyone has their own descriptors but for me, Latour is the most tannic/full bodied of all the first growths. So along the style of LLC, Montrose, Just full of dark fruit, tobacco, heavy.
Mouton for me, pre 2015, would be the wine that is the less distinctive among all the first growths. So if you asked 10 people to taste all the first growths, I think more people would say they like Mouton than any other wine but no one would pick it as their favourite. Very crowd pleasing. I don't know after 2015 as they have been really be making some stellar wines so we have to wait a few more years to tell but I think their style is a bit more smooth, elegant, slightly exotic. Mouton has always been consumer friendly and you see the most change in their style between the decades. They do tend to move with the modern palate. Pre 2015, I would argue they were a step below the other first growths but I don't that is the case anymore. Hope this helps. Cheers!

@@TrophyWineHunter thanks, as always, for taking the time to reply to my many questions! this is very helpful for me as I'm still trying to figure out which first growths suit/cater to my palette by attempting to draw comparisons with second growths and other wines.
just to provide a short update on my recent ques on Ch. Margaux vs Palmer and Haut Brion. ive had the opportunity to closely follow a half bottle of 2020 Ch. Margaux and 2019 HB recently, and contrary to my initial expectations (i had expected myself to like HB more than Margaux given my unimpressive tastings of Palmer), i actually found the HB to be more in the vein of VCC, merlot-cocoa and dried plum + wet stones, approachable but didnt wow me (where is the freshness?). the Ch. Margaux on the other hand wowed me with its elegance and fragrance... none of the mascular and "new-worldish in fruit/oak" Palmers I had in the past. I was reminded of recent vintages of Rauzan Segla with such refined beauty and sweet sweet fruit without the heavy oak or over-ripeness. my next stop - cheval blanc! hoping C-B will join my list of favorite producers like LLC, Ducru, Lalande and Figeac!

@@Spiritchaser93 Margaux in good years is, in my opinion, better than any of the other first growths. Palmer, in my opinion, is not in the same league as Margaux as it doesn't show the softness on the palate and not as aromatic/fragrant. Margaux, like most Bordeaux, doesn't have many off vintages anymore but if you go back at taste some Chateau Margaux from 1980, 90s and 00s, in those years HB would have been preferable.
That is why it is so hard to make blanket statements about wines. They evolve and change over time so any tasting note or review more than 3 years old, in my opinion, is obsolete as wines, especially at the Trophy leve, evolve so much. 1982 is a great example...15, 10, or even 5 years ago, it is a great vintage but now, with the exception of some of the top wines, most wines are getting to their last legs. Cheers!
