Thank you for the video Laura, it was very informative as always. I rarely use a tripod but when I do so far I have got by with the Joby Gorillapod for my SLR. It is flexible and compact however it is very limiting in terms of its features. I think that if I got myself a proper tripod I would be more inclined to do some night photography or to do more landscapes in general.

    Great video thanks.
One problem with hanging the bag on the hook outdoors is that the wind can catch the bag and start it swinging and acting like a pendulum. This can roick the centre column and change the centre of balance for the tripod causing it all to sway and starts move the camera slightly.
A better way would be to get a tripod net which attaches to all three legs low down and put your bag on that. As the net (and therefore the nag sitting on it) is connected to all three legs it won't sway like it would hanking from a single centre point.
Another way would be to lie the bag on the ground and use a cord or rope to tie the centre hook to the bag top handle. Pull the rope tight enough so that the bag is ALMOST verticaql but still sitting on the ground. Although the weight is shared between the ropoe ad the bit of the bag touching the ground, the friction between the bag and the ground will stop it from swinging.

    Great Video!
I was researching tripods a while ago and ended up with the version of this tripod which has 5 segments instead of the 4 segment version you have here. It folds down a bit smaller for hiking :)
The only thing I don't like is the plastic insert they use for the mechanism to hold the centre column. It is fiddly to adjust the hight or reverse it. I started just folding the legs the other way round instead of reversing the column for macro shots where I need the camera close to the ground.

Thank you so much! I’m glad you liked the video! :) And thanks a lot for your amazing and detailed input about the tripod. So far it doesn’t bother me too much that plastic internal piece to tighten it because it’s from the inside. It did feel weird when I saw it too though. But for now it’s ok. 😄

Hi Laura, Thanks for your insight. The K&F has one unique trick up it's sleeve, which is the horizontal column and to my mind that is very specialized and I would bet you cannot go horizontal with your 105 lens & camera without hanging a 30 kilo sand bag on the opposite end making it specific for studio work, yet you gave examples of traveling and backpacking. When you are treking in the mountains and forests there are a couple important features that exceeds the importance of something like a horizontal column or conversion to a monopod. Those are weight and ability to deal with all weather or environment shooting conditions. I have a MeFoto Aluminum tripod that was a special edition with the leather wrapped legs. Huge waste of nearly $300 for those two reasons that it fails at. It's heavy and I cannot plant it in a stream in the mountains or in the surf at a beach.
I have a Manfrotto Monopod, and used it twice, I think over 15 years. The aforementioned MeFoto I removed the leg once for a monopod with the Tamron 150-600 and will never use a monopod ever again.
I have a LeoFoto Wings tripod, variation Lucifer as the Carbon Fiber and all the hardware is black. The Gabriel variation is all silver carbon fiber and hardware. This tripod can be used with or without the center column which has a fast change out between the tripod base plate or center column and I have a quick change plate to move the ball head seemlessly to either setup. It's light, can be planted in sandy, salty surf with zero problems as the leg sections are sealed against the elements. In addition all the optional features like magic arms the can mount to the leg collar to put a teathered tablet.
This tripod will last and is very light and sealed against the elements. Yes, it was expensive, but I've spent more on all these other Aluminum pretenders than I did on this great carbon fiber tripod that came with a great travel case.
I'm sure the K&F might be a good swiss army knife. But, like they say, I'll take the "Master" of one versus the "Rookie" of many, and honestly, I would bet that maybe 20% would need those extra features while sacrificing weight and endurance.
    Cheers!

Una cosa que vi que me llamó la atención del de Neewer es que tiene un seguro en la cabeza para que no caiga la cámara cuando está en posición horizontal, el de K&F tiene algo así? Laura, the ball head can't be good for all genre of photography, myself for instance, shoot Architecture, as well as urban landscapes, in MF as well as LF so one knob lose and you loose control of a heavy camera system(and an expensive one!), so I use a 3-way head on my big sticks to handle it, one knob and I know what is about to happen, and am ready to catch the camera!

I have this tripod and the one thing I dislike the head, for two reasons, the first if there is any weight, like a Sony 150-600 zoom, it can not cope, but even with a normal camera lens the ball head is difficult to get level and it moves ever so slightly disrupting the composition.

Tripods and the tripod market seems to be changing. 10 years ago, Manfrotto, Gitzo etc and you'd need to buy the head separately (I have a travel Manfrotto and a larger Gitzo) but now KandF and Neewer seem to be producing reasonably priced (NB not cheap) tripods which include the head. Am currently looking at the Neewer TP65, which includes most of the things I need (ball head, lightweight - sorry 2kg is too much for me, panning) as well as a handle for easy manoeuvre and control. Anyone used any Neweer tripods? Any good?

  • @pandabytes4991
    @pandabytes4991 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't know if I'm deaf or it just wasn't discussed, but a tripod like the one featured in the video tends to not fare as well for long exposure photography. Yes, it works well for framing assistance and taking the weight of those very large camera systems. However, that center column can put your system into positions that introduces just enough instability that a ten or fifteen plus minute exposure is not as sharp as you may have been expecting... at least as I remember learning all those years ago. If you do use a tripod like that for long exposures, I would do my best to weigh it down as much as possible to minimize the risk of any slight camera shakes.
If you are wondering why that might be a thing, it comes down to that column creating enough leverage to start introducing system instability. Think of two similar pyramids, both have identical bases, but one is 50% taller. That extra height with the same base will act as leverage, allowing the taller pyramid to rock more than the shorter one.

Not a fan at all of the center shaft. If extended stability is questionable. I use nothing but Sirui tripods having a 2204, 4414 and a 5214. The 5214 is great when I have my gimbal mount and my 600mm lens mounted for birds and other fast moving animals or in the studio, It is super stable!

Unless the centre-shaft is used inverted - it's a great thing and the only thing that gets lower is a bean-bag.

Not every photographer needs a tripod. Cartier-Bresson and McQuillan did quite well without tripods. It depends on your style of photography, and perhaps the subject matter in front of your lens. However to say that every photographer needs a tripod is grossly inaccurate.

Adjustable center column - this defeats the stability of a tripod, you had three axis’s of stability but by putting your gear up on a pole now you only have vertical stability. Essentially you now have a monopod standing on top of a tripod…
Horizontal center axis - why would you hang your camera so far off center. You’ve moved the cameras weight outside of the tripods stability. This is not a safe thing to do especially with heavier gear…
Changing from horizontal to vertical axis with a ball head (unless it’s a very light camera) as you’ve now moved the center of gravity outside of the tripods stability. It’s like leaning over a cliff further and further and expecting to stay there…
I’ve purchased one tripod since starting photography, RRS carbon fiber. It’s rock solid, reliable and safely holds my gear…
When I was shopping for a tripod I read a review that stated “buy once cry once”. It’s much more expensive to purchase one tripod then another and another because they’re “inexpensive” and not designed well. Buy one good tripod that’ll serve you well for many years…
Multi function tripods are like the old “all in one” pieces of stereo equipment, they’ll do everything but nothing very well.

That's an excellent insight into that tripod. I have 2 different K&F tripods and I like them - but their bags are a tad flimsy. This one might be a bit overkill for me but I'm still thinking about getting one.
One thing though about your video Laura, can you please reduce the number of times you say "SUPER". I totally understand that English isn't your first language but after a couple of minutes into your video all I could hear was Super, Super, Super....

There is no such thing as the best tripod, there are a number of good tripods, it really comes back to your needs. For example if you only want a table top tripod you will select the best one that suits your needs and not a full sized tripod.
