At the start of the 11-day feast for Annai Velankanni, Our Lady of Good Health, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims gather at the shrine on the Bay of Bengal for the flag hoisting ceremony. The Velankanni flag, which flies only during the feast each year, is considered a sacred image.
Here, we translate to English the traditional song that is sung in Tamil as the flag is raised.
