It's not a Ford, it's a Shefflex, different manufacturer! The Selsey Tramway actually had quite an extensive fleet of locomotives, one of which (Ringing Rock) is represented in my Manning Wardle K Class pack. The other button in the cab is actually a decompression handle, which stops the motor.

Just after WW1 the internal combustion engine became widly and cheaply available for the general public and industry.
Several railroads around the globe experimented with petrol powered trains, Goods vans railway carriages and even some shunter locomotives got petrol engines.
The worldwide financial crisis made lightweight economical trains a necessary need and buslike lightweight trains were developed
The widly and cheaply available Ford model TT/ AA ( truck/lorry version of the T and A ) drivetrain and chassis is the base of alot of these often build in house rail busses.
The petrol period of the railways is often forgotten by the public, because ist a very shorty span from the end of WW1 till the early 30's when the Diesel period started.
But it marks an important period that led to the modern lightweight DMU/EMU's today.
