Frustrating for the drivers I'm sure. Hard to feel bad for the idiots that wanted to play chicken w/the rally cars. This crowd was mild compared to some of the other stages where they wouldn't move until the very last second.
Just showing that Southern Europe wasnt the only place were huge masses of crowd were a problem in that era. Of course these kind of overly crowded + dangerous places were rarer in Finland but only a huge amount of luck prevented this crash ending in tragedy.

In the eighties everyone stood beside the road, if you did not want to stand there you eighter was called a coward or left at home. The eighties demanded their share of fatalties and severe injuries before people began to understand that they practically were a human damper as a car came flying at you at speeds over 60mph/100kph. That was normal back then, just as we find them crazy now they would find us lame and stupid back then. Part of the thrill was to stand far too close. My friends father was an avid rally fan and he told me of one time he and four of his friends were standing next to the road on a straigt part of the track cars passing to the left from their view. The straight was chosen as: "To really hear the sound as they floored it." One driver with an Opel lost grip at the curb before the straight and smashed into the roadside and clipped the roots of a tree with the left rear end, dropped onto the chassis as the rear suspension came off before the car spun right and flipped up in the air. The car crashed onto the roof about 30-40 metres away from them, then flipped once more and sent all the loose parts flying around. They stood there frozen as no-one thought anyone could crash there. Then they reacted to all the debris flying torwards them. A part of the rear spoiler hit one of them in the head, another one ducked for the same spoiler part and then had some metal tube hit him in the chin and chest. My friends father only stepped to the left to avoid getting hit, but he heard a humming noice his and his cap moved on his head. The last two backed into the forest behind them so they avoided it all. When the car then came skidding, again on its roof, nearing a standstill, they went to check the car (with other spectators, some of them hit by debris as well). My friend father heard a thumping sound to the left and he saw the wheel that had clipped the roots in the crash, still bouncing on the road. He then understood that the wheel had flown off, and passed so close to his head that his cap moved. He said he went into shock that very second, and he had walked straight to their car without a single word said. The drivers made it OK, the guy who was hit by the tube needed some stitches to the chin but overall no-one got severely hurt. My friends father is no longer alive, taken away by illness some years ago but he was a rally fan for his life. He moved futher away and he always stood behind some thick trees just in case. One of the guys who backed into the forest later died beside a racetrack, falling off a transport truck with his motorbike and landing underneath it. So spectate safe! :)

1. Thanks for this excellent video, full of facts and not ridden with falsification of useless glose, well presented with chapters and tier clicable time-stamps. This is the best a video can do to help lessen the accidents and their consequences, and increase the progress. 2. I don't share the ones bashing the crowd who came and kept near the track. The fast and secure cars we have enjoyed result from many people, including the drivers who took risks and sometimes died, AND the said crowds who attended, also with their own risks. Let's NOT bash our predecessors: in 1980s and before, people were certainly as prudent and reasonable as now, if not more; simply, because we are far, we don't know well who they were and what they did, we misunderstand them, and misjudge them. 3. I always taught the 4 children I raised and all the young I had to lead, to do what their natural instinct orders and that most humans duly do: *RUSH TO THE ONES IN DISTRESS,* don't mind the hypocrites who call you voyeur, morbid etc. On an accident, there are most often a number of witnesses who do rush, and often some who are able to actually help and eventually to save lives. Those saviors are obviously rarely from the ones admonishing the helpful ones from behind their computer, rather from the ones who, having many times come around and as near as possible from many accidents, have learn a lot about what happens, what does help and what doesn't, up to making them, if fate places them in the right place and time, able to really help and save. 4. Don't be surprised that spectacular accidents are often less deadly than one could fear: the more energy dissipated in spectacular material destruction, the less available to The Reaper for destruction of humans.
