the line that always gets me the most from this 1 is the "he's not a machine, he's a man" anyone who played sports combat or otherwise knows that a comeback starts with a moment like this .... 1 small moment that gives u belief, that gives u momentum and then it's all about how much u want it

The Cold War was such a HUGE part of life in the ‘80s. It permeated all aspects of popular culture in music, TV and movies. We all believed that nuclear war could happen and wipe us all out at any minute. The ending of this movie really made me feel optimistic that things would be okay.

  • @brockbaby

The important thing in the movie is Rocky always needed Adrienne to believe in him. But suddenly in this movie shes' telling him he cant' win! He also trains himself for the first time. Textbook evolution of a character movies 1-4. Just amazing writing.

  • @Xackadee
    @Xackadee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I love how each Rocky antagonist that he fights represents a new challenge and that Rocky himself is in a different place for the fight.
*Rocky I:* Creed, the reigning champion up against Rocky who's just a regular joe slightly past his prime. It's an underdog story against an insurmountable challenge, even if Creed doesn't take him too seriously at first.
*Rocky II:* Creed again, this time as an equal rather than as the highest height Rocky could reach for. A rematch where Creed is prepared fro Rocky from the start to decide who the true champion is. But Rocky's already proved himself and he doesn't fight for glory this time around as much as to support his family.
*Rocky III:* Clubber, a savage animal of a man who's overflowing with anger and hunger. He gives Rocky his first real challenge in years and goes so hard that he makes Rocky outright scared to step back into the ring.
*Rocky IV:* Drago, pretty much the opposite of Clubber, a cold and quiet machine of a man. Practically devoid of identity due to being a tool of his country. Him killing Creed in their fight motivates Rocky to step up to him after being about ready to move on with his life.

I don't remember if it is in the Director's Cut that was released a few years ago, or on the cutting room floor, but I know at one point there were many more scenes on Drago's back story. Drago was getting sick of being a puppet for the Soviet propaganda and wanted to show people that he could fight for him, not just for the Soviet propaganda machine. This is why Drago picks up Russian manager guy later in the movie, because he didn't like that he was telling him he was embarrassing his country. That scene would have made more sense with the original planned backstory.

No.1 film of 1985 and among 2 films for Stallone that year.
The highest-grossing film of the franchise.
Considered the hardest film that he had ever worked as actor and filmmaker at that time.
The inspiration was one of the greatest boxing rivalries ever, Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling.
2 matches (1936, 1938) took place between these two and was concurrent with WW2's rising.
    Louis was Black and American.
    Schmeling was German.
The controversy of nations in conflict (Us against Them) was there as it was omnipotent in the mid-1980 (Cold War).
The most unexpected story planned for the franchise.
Stallone had a few different ideas for what he wanted to do.
Overall in the outcome of Apollo Creed's character (his most regretful).
There was an director's cut released in 2021.
Some things were different while it remained the same movie.
It is worth the viewing and maybe you'll watch it after the Creed films.
But other than that, this was a sign of the times for film and the culture.
In fact, some say it was the closest to the feeling of seeing the Cold War's end (ironically).

  • @Drakan86

What’s up my guy. I love seeing you on this series, and the absolute fucking BEST is yet to come.
But I have to talk about Rocky V first, zero spoilers. I would love to say that you shouldn’t listen to people hating on it, or give it a chance without reading comments about it or ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. But I won’t.
What happened with me was this: Rocky V depressed me with how much I hated it, so much that I gave up caring about the series altogether.
Then a friggin miracle happened: Rocky Balboa resurrected the series and was followed up with two incredible movies after that! Now I feel that the pain of Rocky V made me greatly appreciate what happens with the next three movies.
If it disappoints you, just remember that the best is yet to come. Looking forward to more, buddy!

I think it's important to point a few things out: Apollo didn't get killed because he didn't train [more about that in a moment]. Apollo got killed because Drago was on steroids. It wasn't just a man hitting a man; it was an older man being hit in the face with a sledgehammer. That's an important difference. With Rocky, whilst he didn't have all that technical equipment Drago did, being out in nature, he got the better workout of the two. Drago's in a gym where he goes outside and he's probably still in Moscow or some such. But Rocky has to live in it where he is.
This is also something that Russia actually did at the Olympics before this movie came out. They roided up their athletes and when they annihilated the competition, it was discovered they were juiced up and their gold medals were stricken (I do not know offhand if the athletes themselves were in on it, but certainly the government was).
Now, I have Stallone's shooting draft of this film. That's the draft they actually make the movie from, the one that everyone has on set. In it, Apollo DOES train for the fight. Rocky trains him. I remember Apollo was even running up and down a staircase (his version of the Rocky steps) at some point. Herein lies the problem: based on this script, the movie seems like it would be about 2 1/2 hrs long. But Stallone cut it down to 91 minutes so it would play more times in theaters and make more money (it's an old post-production trick, and it worked--"Rocky IV" became the most successful of the series). As a result, all of the drama has been removed from the film (and because so much was cut out, a lot of it had to be replaced with montages to bridge the removed sequences).
For instance, in this shooting script, Apollo is absolutely BORED with retirement life. He doesn't take the Drago fight out of pride. He does it because he knows Drago's gonna beat him. He knows it (whether or not he knows Drago would kill him, I'm not sure about). But what he also knows is that him losing will cement a fight between Rocky and Drago and he knows that Rocky, being who he is, will help to bring America and Russia closer together. But since all that was cut out, now Creed just seems like a prideful, showboating fool.

Hope you’re doing well man, your videos always put a smile on my face. Also by the way, do you think you’ll do a Q&A for a 100K sub celebration? Just curious that’s all.

The Rocky movies are all fantastic. I can never quite decide if I like the 1st or 6th best, both have such a strong message about determination and resolve and never giving up no matter what obstacles you encounter in life. And Stallone writes from the heart, having faced those obstacles himself. He's on record as saying the 6th Rocky film was harder to get made than the 1st, but he stuck at it. Rocky himself is like a human metaphor for courage and tenacity.
The 5th is a little bit different from the 4 preceding it, but still enjoyable in its own way as you'll find out soon.
Some of the thematic imagery in this film was powerful. They had Rocky train in cold, harsh and difficult conditions (he could just as easily have trained in the USA and flown out for the fight), mirroring the cold and unfeeling nature of his opponent. Cutting down the huge tree, just as he would have to fell his much larger rival. And that climb up the mountain at the end was a mirror of the symbolic mountain he was climbing by facing an opponent who was younger, bigger and stronger than him.
Dolph Lundgren was perfectly cast to play the Russian and Stallone has even remarked a few times that he is incredibly strong in real life, I think Stallone ended up in hospital for a while after one of Lundgren's punches during filming left him with a swollen heart.
The film does feel very '80s' now but it was very much a product of its time. The cold war between the East/West was at it's peak in the early 80s and that was very much reflected in the film. Still, it tries to send a message that there could be peace between both sides if they were willing to change rather than just going for the rhetoric of having evil Russian villains who all die in the end like in a typical action flick.
Less said about the robot, the better! There was a fascination with emerging consumer robotics/computers in the 80s and it probably seemed like a fitting idea at the time.......
