    Bad weather is a recipe for mayflies. When a major, late season snow storm was forecast to roll through our region we knew it would bring on good hatches of march brown and blue-winged olive mayflies. Mayflies and bad weather are made for each other! We set out to drift our local river in search of a pocket or two where the emerging mayflies would collect in hopes of finding rising rainbow trout - and find rising rainbow trout we did! This turned into an epic session on the camera as the march browns & blue-winged olives hatched in droves and several rainbow trout came shallow to rise to Amelia's dry flies.

    I have been following your videos for a long time, much to my regret I have to tell you that this is not fishing. In other videos there are only fish, super technical long distance fly cast, but you make art, incredible images, wonderful music, without a doubt you describe the essence of fly fishing. thanks for doing a great job. Congratulations

      That's part of where this whole thing is going as well. We want to first really dig in to this vein with hatches and the minutiae and then switch things up as more waters open soon and do expeditions and larger scale videos as well. Of course we can't get to where we want in one season so over the coming 2 to 3 years we should have some neat opportunities! :) Thanks again, glad you enjoy 'em

      It was pretty gutting not to see a rainbow to hand. But how things were missed is just a cosmic parade of showing what can go wrong beyond what we do on the water. And it was neat that I got enough a piece of each to be able to share those things on video. All told a really fun bit of time on a beautiful afternoon. :)

    Wow you guys are the real McCoy!
    I have to say the videos are getting more and more cinematic. Really nice to watch.
    I picked up a screen shot of a March Brown dun really close up. It shows how the dun floats with the abdomen angled up pushed by its the legs. This really comes close how the classic Catskill dries floats on the water. Thank you

    • @jensenflyfishing
      @jensenflyfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you enjoyed this one - it's getting closer to the style & focus we want to focus on, though you can't guarantee a hatch every day you can find a seam that is feeding a trout or two and hone in on that. :) We'll continue to hone in on these and keep adding/improving to the vision :) And we saw the screen grab - it's neat to see only the wee paws on the water, isn't it? It's funny how we all want low riding duns but that might be the last thing we need. The other observation is that if you watch scenes where the mayflies are dancing, those are often the ones getting eaten. Little drag pulls on a dead drift often work well :)

We're 2 or 3 seasons away from where we want to be, the vision as it is. The flies oversight is mine (Dave). I am not a big fly guy as it is and I clearly bias/project that in our videos, to our videos' detriment to be honest. That's something we'll work on a little more this summer - but be prepared to see the same damned patterns time & again! :) I carry 4K flies but maybe 20 patterns (repetitions and various sizes). :)

      14' leader, fine tipper, small flies. Be accurate and gentle or spook the fish with an errant cast. On camera it's all manual - stuff a setting or be slightly off on focus and zero chance of getting the shot. With tight aperture even 5% out and the shot is stuffed. Just a perfectionist detail 🍻
