12 Years a Slave. Absolutely soul-crushing and unflinchingly brutal film. I can stomach and occasionally revisit a lot of sad movies, but I’ve had no desire to rewatch that film since seeing it in theaters almost 10 years ago.

Such a GOOD MOVIE! Our audience that watched it all clapped at the end! Brendan “Charlie” couldn’t have done a better job! All the characters in this movie were excellent and played their parts well! His nurse friend Liz was sooo down to earth and powerful! She was one of my favorites beside Brendan’s character!! Go SEE THIS MOVIE!!

Fantastic review, sir! My wife and I saw this yesterday and it absolutely floored us along with the entire theater. This packed a punch like no other, and Fraser put on a once in a lifetime performance. Aronosfky has shown yet again he brings out the best from those who trust in his vision and that he’s as versatile as they come. 5/5 for me.

I just saw it at the theater a couple of hours ago and I EMPHATICALLY agree with everything you said!! I was floored too!! And that ending... Wow! I was completely rocked by that ending. It was absolutely PERFECT. I was an emotional wreck after that ending, I was crying profusely all through the credits. I'm still emotionally shook up!! I LOVE this movie!!!

Cheers Chris, this looks like a must watch, although not sure I will be able to bring myself to it.
There are several 'incredible' movies that I've seen, that I will probably never watch again, either because they were just too intense or still haunt me: The Road (could only watch half of it), Casino (still have nightmares about being buried alive!), Tarantula (THIS is what caused my severe arachnophobia as a child, I'm sure!), Schindler's List, Shawshank Redemption; finally, The Incredibles...it's in the name! ;).

@jevinday omg you have it but haven finished it?@ yeah the set style allows it to focus exclusively on the characters and the insane build up. It peaks hard-core in the last act. Amazing flick. The Road will just make you bawl your eyes out last act. But it's a weirdly positive cry.

"Close" (also from A24) is devastating, but I will probably watch it again for the performances when it comes out on streaming services (late January I think). It will leave a mark. I tend to actually prefer darker, grim films like The Devil All The Time, Prisoners, Wind River, etc. The Whale is on my list to check out. I definitely can't watch Schindler's List again.

“The Champ” with Jon Voight and a very young Ricky Schroder. He absolutely crushes his role and should have received an Oscar (despite being only about 8yrs old) They play father and son (in a full circle 20years later they play father and son again in Lonesome Dove 2).
Its the only movie I ever cried in. And I’ve seen more movies than anyone here judging by the age of movies mentioned.

I finally watched this movie. Being a Brendan Fraser fan & considering the huge hype of this movie, I'm sad to say that I was really disappointed in the story. Wouldn't the most logical & obvious choice Ellie desperately needed was to be with her dad Charlie again, rather than him choosing to lose his life so he could give her money? The fact that Ellie hated her dad for abandoning her, at a very young age, just so he could be with his lover, I don't think money is the solution to the huge mess he made with her. IMO, the message of the story was disappointing b/c Charlie selfishly decided to abandon her again, but this time permanently (by death), rather than choosing to live so he can get reacquainted & close to Ellie. I think Charlie, as a father, is irresponsible & ne'er-do-well. I don't think money he left for her will fix her abandonment issue nor hatred towards people.

Great review. I just watched the movie last night and it was a masterclass in raw acting at its finest. The story is simple enough and isn't perfect but it's well-made and gets its point across effectively. The last half of the movie was incredible to me and all came together in a heartbreaking but strangely triumphant way. Brendan Frasier broke me into pieces, but afterward, I felt whole again like there was healing with that pain. Not everyone will enjoy the movie or accept everything that happens, but that usually says more about them than the movie itself. For example, Last King of Scotland isn't a movie I would watch over and over again but Forest Whittaker is incredible in that and will stick in your mind for a long time. I believe this movie has the same effect on me.

The one movie I cant ever watch again is Irreversible starring Monica Belucci and Vincent Cassell. "The Scene" is way too much for me even though it turns out Monica B. and Vincent C. were actually married to each other at the time. Although there is a lot of "stuff" in The Nightingale, I've watched it twice and Irreversible's "scene" is still worse.

  • @brianng8350
    @brianng8350 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Samantha Morton was excellent given she only has one scene. You think she is a hurt or angry/mean woman, but so much complexity in those 10 or so minutes.
Hong Chu had great range given she is a secondary character, but probably the most screen time between her and Sadie Sink and Ty Simpkins. There is true friendship, love, disappointment, fear and everything. She probably got a bigger range of emotions than Brendan Fraser. And very diffferent from her character in The Menu. She is definitely someone to watch for in future roles.
Like many good dramas, they are not for repeat viewing.
    Spoiler talk....
I can understand Charlie's (dad's) hope that his daugther (Ellie) is not the Anti-Christ, but when she "leaked" Thomas' (missionary's) confession , he gave her credit that she tried helped him? Granted, the result was a happy ending, but nowhere did I see Ellie's character had any redemptive arc except the last moment when she read to her father. Otherwise, she seems to be just your average angry teen?

Somewhere around 2:00 you say there's an air of hope and optimism in this movie... I disagree. I felt Charlie was displaying a desperate longing for relevant legacy. This movie felt like a ticking time bomb, complete with an on-screen countdown of days to the end... He was DESPERATE to make a difference in *someone* by the end of the week: His LEGACY was what this movie was all about. It was heartbreaking and heartfelt. It was an amazing and Oscar-Worthy raw performance. But in my opinion it was not "hopeful" or "optimistic".

I am always willing to watch films again. I do it in the hope that I will find some nuance that I perhaps missed before. There are some films though that I don't look forward to taking that journey. However, the casting, the story, the cinematography leaves me no choice but to want to watch and give it another go.
One of those films is "Happiness".

Frasier has done some great things. School Ties, With Honors, Airheads, Encino Man, Crash, No Sudden Moves, and now this film which will leave him a legacy as a great actor. Even his silly kids movies are good fun and likely netted him a nice payday. He sustained an awful back injury in Mummy 3.

In terms of amazing movies that I never want to see again, I can think of two. Room with Brie Larsen, and Manchester By the Sea with Casey Affleck. I might be a little more inclined to watch Manchester by the Sea again, because at least it has some moments of levity despite being an emotionally shattering movie. The laughs serve like sugar to help the tragedy go down. But with Room, it's almost a little too real and too raw with a complete absence of that silver lining in Manchester. Both are amazing and incredibly bleak.

Fury is a movie that I love and is just plain hard to watch again. I understand that it's a movie and I'll probably get someone commenting, "you know that wasn't historically accurate🤓". The movie just makes me emotional and makes me remember that the freedom we do have came at a deep and dark price. It makes me feel like I need to make an impact on the world because I was blessed enough to live in a time those that gave their lives fought so hard to attain. It also makes me feel guilty for ever complaining or thinking that I have it hard.

I found Hong Chau's character to be insanely unlikable. At one point she tells the Mormon "He wont BE HERE next week" then in the next scene asks Fraser "WHY ALL OF A SUDDEN do you wanna see your daughter now? Then gives him a hogie sandwhich and lets him choke while she laughs about highschool friends. Amazing. Very unlikable and i hope the Oscars ignore her again for her attitude towards the whole thing.

One movie that I saw in theaters back in 2012 or 13 that was just excellent was Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, but I’ve never been able to bring myself to watch it a second time. A decade later I can still remember all the scenes and just that awful, unpleasant feeling from it. I’ve seen all the rest of his movies more than once (Sicario, Enemy, & Incendies probably twice, and Arrival, BR2049, & Dune at least 3-4 times or more), but I could never watch Prisoners again.

    *No spoilers here.*
THE WHALE is about an obese man named Charlie who doesn't care that he could die at any moment. However, if someone around him is sad or angry, he always finds a way to make their words sound positive. That's right: He's pessimistic and optimistic at the same time. And he has a best friend named Liz who talks to him with tough love, but she also enables his behavior. She's a nurse, but she smokes. All of these aspects might seem like contradictions, but they're actually layers. This had potential to be a very compelling story, but it often feels melodramatic, especially with Rob Simonsen's overbearing music score. The performances are very good, but there are one or two instances of unnatural exposition, and the way Ellie (Charlie's daughter) says shocking things gets old very fast. When she has a conversation with a missionary named Thomas, she admits she doesn't mean anything she's saying and her goal is to make him uncomfortable. The intention doesn't make the scene any less annoying. This is a stage-to-screen adaptation that doesn't feel cinematic. There have been plenty of other cases like this, but what's baffling is that Darren Aronofsky is the director. Whether you like or dislike his movies, you can’t deny that he's an auteur, but this movie feels like anyone could've been behind the camera. And no, staying true to his style wouldn't have been a distraction from the plot, characters and dialogue. THE WRESTLER proved that he can make a movie where the presentation has a lot of personality without being flashy. Here, pretty much every scene is presented in the most straightforward way possible. Andrew Weisblum's bad editing doesn't help.
