I love that trick of looking through the shutter curtain to check the flash synchronisation, I always learn something new with your videos. Many thanks, Aidan.

Oh my Lord ... I had this Olympic model of the Zenit for years, you just bought back so many memories.
I learned about photography with that camera and the inbuilt light meter, lining up that little circle in the window,.reading off apertures and shutter speeds vs. the film speed. I loved mine so much, but it was all I was ever going to have really. I used to wish for another lens but again, no - it was not going to happen for me. No one else I knew took photos.
One photo I took on Ektachrome slide in around 1987 would still to this day be in my portfolio.
Now I swap between my Olympus Pro lenses on my EM-1 and I still remember my Zenit and my humble beginnings.
I ended up having drive issues, the film drive gave out and I think I ended up.with an exposed roll I couldn't rewind into the can. I didn't have another SLR until digital. I had half-frame Ricoh compact 35mm and other compacts. Now I cannot spend a day taking 500+ frames on my EM-1 without doing the maths of dividing by 36 ... how many rolls would today have been ? LOL never in a million years would I have ever been able to take 20 rolls of film in a day at a zoo ...
Godspeed, 35mm film, rest peacefully Zenit E SLR Moscow Olympic edition. I salute you.

Another nice video Peter. Have to say your E model is in immaculate condition! I find it not the most user friendly of cameras but the results are always beautiful so I use it a lot. My selenium cell still works well too so I use the built in light meter. Loading and unloading film is a nuisance though, as you mentioned.
Interestingly I was once told that the "B" on that uncomfortable shutter speed selector doesn't stand for "Bulb" or "Brief Mode" but is actually a V in Russian cyrilic, "Vruchnuyu" (вручную) meaning "manual" or "by hand".
Whether that's true or not is different story.

    Good Morning Mr.Elgar,
thank you for another enjoyable and informative video, it's always a pleasure to watch and your enthusiasm is a delight as ever.
I have a 1965 Zenit EM and it's the best fun I've ever had with a camera and the fact that it was £20 with lens and case means it was a perfect way back into film photography for me. I hadn't used a film camera since 1996-7.

Brilliant review Peter it’s a pity such a lovely old vintage Russian SLR has so many mechanical issues. I own a Zorki 3 which thankfully is still fully working , but I am careful to make sure I always wind on before changing the shutter speed ☺️

I remember my father owning two Zenit cameras.
One was a particularly early model and the other very similar to this one, but not this particular model.
    He swore by them...😃👍

Interesting vid as usual. My first camera was a Zenit B with Industar lens back in 1974. I was very happy to use that for two years until I got a Praktica LTL with the Tessar lens.

Everything was working fine on my copy.. so I rewound the film after exposing and removed film Container...now after that I found I could not get shutter to fire...with trial and error noted that the shutter button looked slightly rusty...
Anyways I put a drop of sewing machine oil on shaft of shutter button.. and just worked it after a while shutter started to work.. and wiped it clean a tissue and continued firing and changing shutter speed too..
You said that knob was a bit stiff...but I cured it...just my idea... dont you know!!

If you want a problems buy russian film camera.. Even mint condition zenit, can make you "surprise", or stuck in middle of film. Shutter curtains are terrible, in many cases can leak light (with time get micro holes) They are just rubish..

Hello Peter, I have got a roll of 1991 ilford pan F film 50ASA, can you tell me what film speed I should use? Many thanks, Aidan.

    • @theoldfilmbloke
      @theoldfilmbloke  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hallo Aidan -- If it has been kept 'in the Cold' it should still be good at 40 ASA -- BUT that film suffers from 'Latent Image Regression' badly so do not keep 'exposed images' on it for a long time without getting it processed -- I processed 16 films for a member of Pentax User site and the 3 Pan-F films were all 'blank' -- not even the numbers fogged by machine in the factory developed but his Afga Pan and FP4+ and T-max 400 very outdated I managed to get good images from. you can send me the PAN-F for processing when ready if you like.

@@theoldfilmbloke hello Peter, I already have a paterson tank with ilford chemicals for B&W films, the film came in an auction lot with a broken pentax ME super, that came with a 50mm, 135mm M series lenses, a zoom, Yashica fx D which needs new light seals, an Exakta 1000 with a Zeiss Pancolar lens and other lenses, an ilford prentice 120 camera... plus an Autoknips II timer shutter timer, which you'd love! Oh, and 4 rolls of fujifilm colour 35mm.. all for 16 pounds!! so I'm doing a lot of element cleaning this week... such a relaxing hobby. 😌

All the troubles from those cameras don't surprise me in the least. I, from experience with Russian cameras remind me of junk. Maybe some have good copies, but all my Russian ones were, and are nothing but junk and trouble.

Technical & Optical Equipment (London) Ltd. were the only authorized British importers of Soviet cameras. Founded in 1962, they gained a reputation as responsible sellers, because they took apart every camera in their own repair facilities for calibration and repair before feeding them to the market. Zenit cameras that entered the UK market were generally okay, if you understood their habits. I imagine cameras for the home market were pretty grim.
