  • Today I thought we could revisit my Renaissance series and talk a little bit about the Borgia family. I think they work extremely well in historical fiction and frankly, I'll read any book about Cesare Borgia.
    Books I Mentioned:
The Serpent and the Pearl by Kate Quinn
The Sins of the House of Borgia by Sarah Bower
The Borgia Bride by Jeanne Kalogridis
    Poison by Sara Poole
The Borgia Confessions by Alyssa Palombo
Blood and Beauty by Sarah Dunant

So timely to me. I just launched a Borgia binge; been watching the tv show along with reading a non-fiction (by Christopher Hibbert) and Blood & Beauty, which I just finished (and I got a copy of the second book but haven't started it yet) I also read The Vatican Princess by CW Gortner, which was pretty lurid, but entertaining. Next up for me are the Medicis.. Appreciate your videos, I'm a longtime fan...

The Vatican Princess by CW Gortner is a book I’ve read on Lucrezia and loved, looking forward to checking out these other recommendations!

Hi Jennifer. I love Sarah Dunant. I discovered her thanks to you. I’ve read three of her books. I started with her first Borgia book but had to return it to the library. I will read her two Borgia books at some point this year. Love this kind of video.

Have you read the manga "Cesare - Il Creatore che ha distrutto"? It's amazing, beautifully illustrated, very slow paced and positive towards Cesare. It all takes place when he's 16 and in university in Pisa, and it ends with the conclave. He's shown as sharp and ruthless, though he's also an idealist. There's also a new musical adaptation that's amazing. You should look it up. There's an original character, Angelo, who's more or less the point of view character. He's shippable with Cesare (and they sing nice duets together in the musical) but a lot of the fans ship Cesare with Miguel (Michelotto). Giovanni de'Medici is also a major character in it.

Any recommendations for non-fiction about the Borgias?

Sarah Bradford has written, in my opinion, two fabulous biographies about Lucrezia and Cesare Borgia. Highly recommended you check out them out. One is titled Lucrezia Borgia: Life, Love, and Death in Renaissance Italy and the other is simply Cesare Borgia
