52 here... with 25+ years of service... but I also have VA disability and health insurance, a about 900k TSP (40-60 split between Roth and traditional), 150k in brokerage and cash...house is paid for, car paid for...so VERA it is for me.
I am banking on the stock market making up for no COLA until 62. It is a trade off between life, mental health and more money.

Just punch some numbers... Health insurance will continue to increase over those 10 years and you won't get any COLA... which usually offsets it.

I’m VERA eligible being 52 with 29 years of service, but I would not take it. I’m making a great income, maximizing my TSP contributions including the catch-up, and will continue to increase my years of service for a better pension when I do retire. No way am I stopping now.

You may have to. The gov intends to get rid of 200,000 employees. You may not have the choice to say I’m NOT going anywhere. If not the buyout then maybe a RIF. It’s seems foreign because it is. Employees are under new management.

So far, it's not clear to me that VERA is automatically available to someone who retires under the deferred resignation program. Many people think that VERA is separate from deferred resignation - if you happen to be offered VERA during the deferred resignation period, you can take it, bu there's no guarantee you will be offered a VERA.

VERA is to be authorized by agency, and I heard from my SES that it is not active in most places. She also mentioned that it’s a myth that FitR is not funded, all positions have funding for FY 2025 in the DoD at least and most other places in Gov. However, VERA is not funded and must be taken out of agency funding to pay for, unless Congress appropriates for it.

Can't believe people are considering this, unless they have under 5 years in government and was leaving anyway. First, you have to type "I resign". You can put I resign and retire, but the faq says they will only look at "I resign". Second, I've read a copy of the document you have to sign later. You waive ALL of your rights - everything. This makes sense since they are maybe giving you something. Third, pres ordered a 70% drawdown of OPM staff and programs. If that happens, who will process your retirement/VERA? In other words, you might get paid by the time his four-year term is up. ha ha

With VERA/VSIP if you have 25 years you can walk with a pension. You will still get a supplement for social security from age 55 (Did you say 57? rules may of changed, what I'm saying reflects back to 2011) to 62 . You will get no COLA's until age 62. You may want to convert the TSP to an IRA so that you can start converting to Roth (rules regarding TSP may of changed so check this out for yourself) But convert while your income is low and before Social Security and only the optimized amount for each year. You need to develop or have a Forward Looking Tax Plan to see an optimized path for conversion. Optimize the way you take Social Security. Good Video!

Missing out on COLAs is a big deal. The total of FERS COLAs for the past 5 years is a cumulative 18.1% and that doesn't account for missing out on the compounding effect. Imagine going out at age 50 and having to wait 12 years for the first COLA.

I was told I can touch the TSP penalty free even if the VERA date is 30 Sep because I turned 55 that year. - From Schwab website: If you turn 55 (or older) during the calendar year you lose or leave your job, you can begin taking distributions from your 401(k) without paying the early withdrawal penalty.

I was planning to retired in August 2027 with 31 years of service and turning 62. Getting 8 months salary plus 11 months of FERS annuity plus the suppliment vs. working and comuting for the next 19 months I would gross $9.50 per hour going into the office and working.
