Gemmy 2001 Bongo Gorilla - “Bang The Drum All Day”

I’ll be posting some of my favorite Gemmy items this month, starting with this underrated gorilla. I’d wanted one for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until April 15th, 2020 that I finally got this one off eBay for like $30. There were much cheaper ones for sale at the time, but I wanted one that still had the little yellow “PUSH HERE” tag for some reason. I wish I would’ve waited and got one with a less ugly face lol, but I’ve kinda grown to like it how it is. The mouth and the head were split when I got it, but I think I just replaced all 3 gears anyway. I was very surprised when I first opened it though, it’s built like a tank. The plastic is thick and secure, and all the motors are large and powerful. It also takes 4 C batteries, rather than AAs, in case you didn’t know. There is nothing to complain about here, this item is an example of a great concept executed perfectly. I love the design, I love the movement, I love the phrases, and I definitely love the song. This is why I just love and prefer old stuff like this, simple but effective. Nice and very unique concept, phrases that aren't generic and they make character, and they didn't even need to add a 3rd motor for the mouth, but they did anyways and I love that. The best you can get nowadays is a flimsy 2 direction gearbox, or 2 motors on an item with a poor concept.

Yep… I totally agree. The early 2000s was truly Gemmy’s prime time in my opinion. You can tell there was real heart and soul put into the items they made. They put so much more effort into developing a good product back then, it’s just something you don’t see much of these days.

That’s awesome! He’s a good one for sure. Mine is probably running off AAs in this video, so that might affect the rocking a little
