  • Peter Bowers Introduces the Latest Reinvention of the Classic WACO Design
On Monday, May 17th, 2010, WACO Classic Aircraft Corporation announced the FAA certification of the WACO YMF 5-D aircraft. The updated WACO model is the culmination of nearly two years of engineering, development and testing. The all-new FAA and EASA certified aircraft is built from the ground-up to customer specifications including color and paint scheme, leather and carpet, and avionics equipment.
Over 5000 labor hours of hand-built craftsmanship goes into each aircraft, providing customers with an array of updated features including the use of 4130 steel framing and modern hydraulic toe brakes. The WACO YMF 5-D includes the computer-designed MT elliptical tip propeller and all-new, optional 300hp fuel-injected Jacobs radial engine to provide smoother, more optimized performance. In addition, the aircraft features the optional top-of-the-line Garmin IFR instrument package including the all-glass Garmin G600 Advanced MFD display, two Garmin 430 WAAS GPS units, GI-106a VOR/LOC/GS/GPS indicator, and a Mid-Continent 2 ¼" backup attitude indicator with battery system.
Founded in 1983, the Classic Aircraft Corporation sought to recreate the fifty-year-old design into a modern aircraft certified to the original FAA type certificate from 1935. Using a talented engineering team from the likes of Piper, Taylorcraft, and Ford, the company premiered its first FAA certified model in March of 1986. Join Aero-TV as President Peter Bowers introduces the latest WACO reincarnation to hit the market.

I hope you guys keep building these for many, many years. Would like to see the Great Lakes Biplane built with a radial engine too!

@C172Pilotdude People are still ordering these aircraft. Its kinda neat to see mixing and matching of the old and the new. WACO gives you options of your choosing. I do to enjoy a nice vintage cockpit!

This may be a silly question, but if you do get caught in a storm, do you get wet or does the windscreen force enough air up to keep you/passengers dry?

I'm sorry but my personal opinion is the glass panel ruins the whole idea of having a vintage biplane.

How long is the 'Build time' for a standard model ?

As Pete said, "many of our customers have asked for advanced glass" , so what's wrong with that?

I thought this site might attract better educated and informed posters, but apparently not. Visit Waco's website and you will see that the 'standard' aircraft comes equipped with "steam gauges". Like the man said "owners have the option of a glass panel". If you are going to spend $400k+, why wouldn't you want options.

Gorgeous airplane, but a glass cockpit? Not for me, thanks. It's like stuffing a jet engine into a J-3 Cub. Gimme steam gauges any
day. I do like the idea of a fuel injected, 300 horse Jacobs radial, though.

Yea great, let me fly an aircraft that is suppose to be vintage but lets throw expensive glass cockpit shit into it. For what? Who is shooting an ILS in an open cockpit aircraft anyway? Rip that shit out of the aircraft and save about $100,000
