  • The UK-UGANDA green growth project was a virtual conference that took place on the 9th and 10th of February 2022. The conference presented opportunities for increased collaboration between the UK and Uganda across five key themes: climate finance, agribusiness, clean energy, clean infrastructure, and urban planning. These themes are in line with Uganda's green growth development strategy and vision for 2040 aspiring to transform Uganda from a peasant to a modern and prosperous country.
The strategy defines green growth as a system that aims to catalyze economic growth by efficiently using the country's natural, human, and physical capital in an inclusive manner along low carbon emissions, climate-resilient development pathway.
One example of clean energy projects in Uganda is the Nyamagasani hydropower plants. These plants utilize the hydropower potential of the river Nyamagasani as it drops 330m in a series of rapids, near the village of Kyarumba in the foothills of the Rwenzori mountains in Western Uganda. The project is connected to the Ugandan national grid with a contribution of about 21 megawatts. The project also provides social benefits such as improved access to electricity, employment opportunities, and environmental conservation.
The UK-UGANDA green growth project aims to showcase how innovation can drive green technologies and businesses that can help tackle the world's current climate change challenge. Uganda can achieve climate smart economic growth that benefits its people and environment by developing clean energy sources like hydropower, solar, wind, biomass, nuclear and geothermal.
