Ciudad Cayalá is not a city. It only has the word "city" in it's name. This place, is a very well planned and managed urban development within Guatemala department's capital city (Guatemala City). The complex comprises a gated residential community for people belonging to socio- economic levels ranging from medium high to high. It also has a large commercial area open to the public, that is basically a big exterior mall which can also be accessed by the complex's residents. As a lifelong Guatemalan that knows his country well, I can say this is one of several interesting, safe and pleasant places that are worth visiting in this country, that in my opinion, is underrated by the international community.
I would recommend, as a Guatemalan myself, that people stop considering "Cayalá" a city. Or even a functional part of our society. Upscale shops that close due to soaring rent, paint a bleak picture of what goes underneath. This is a simulacrum of a neighborhood. A sore that causes an insane amount of traffic and a disfunctional neighborhood made for foreigners and nationals that cling desperately to any sort of foreign heritage. No one "lives" in Cayalá. No one "stays" longer than needed for a movie and maybe a meal. I've spent one eight of the minimum wage in there, for a few slices of pizza and glasses of soda. It's insane. Not only this, but it's an infamous area for enforcing the conservative, evangelical views of the upper echelons of Guatemalan society. We've had cases of people being thrown out, merely because they held their partner's hand in public, as an act of blatant homophobia. So, I beg you to reconsider. This isn't an "ideal". It isn't even something that I, as someone living a scant few minutes away from this glorified mall, can even identify with.
Another Guate local here. I didn't even know people loved in Cayala 😅 It always seemed like an overpriced mall with pretty architecture. It's way on the other side of the city, for me, so I don't interact with the surroundings much nor gave it any thought outside the few times I've gone there for family events.
No. Just, no. As a guatemalan i can tell you, we dont think of Cayalá as an actual city. Ask anyone who actually lives here and we will tell you, ITS A SHOPPING MALL. One built and owned by corrupt rich individuals involved in national political scandals.

This is like any other subdivision where money is welcome in, but the people who are bringing that money are not welcome to stay & enjoy what their money pays for. As long as wealthy people want to live there & can decide what happens to their compounds, it will be fine.

Well, at least it is open to anyone And I don't know if they are wrong, but this reaches people should also contribute with the government to build better houses for the rest of people and control crimes. Sorry, but that's not a city. It's a mall, themed around a city that is only a few blocks long and wide. So it's more of an example of a walkable neighborhood than a walkable city. For instance, there is no such thing as public transportation.
As a Guatemalan, I hate Cayala. It’s not because of the concept or the luxury. I have no quarrels with that. It’s a distasteful monument to ostentaciousness, and it’s poorly executed. Yes, it is visually striking, specially in a third-world country. But it is awful, and your comment that no architect would find any faults with it are absolutely false. There are many interesting things in the concept of Cayala, specially the development of open spaces that are accessible to everyone (no such thing usually exists in Guatemala City), but the execution is horrendous. Also, although technically correct that the residences are “over 70% of what the average Guatemalan makes in a year” is true, it’s also not descriptive. If I’m not mistaken, a house tends to be about USD1M and an apartment about USD700k. The average Guatemalan might go a lifetime without making that kind of money, and if you look at it in terms of rent, the average salary in the city is still below the average monthly rent price. Also, this area was originally a forest. Yes, it was private land, but it was converted to a huge slab of concrete, so not only is that an insult to the environment, it also means that it is scorching hot when you are there during the summer. All of this long winded comment can be summarized in stating that I hate Cayala for what it is, not what it wanted to be.
The most recurrent comment that I have read about Cayala is that when you get there it gives you a sense of missing autenticity that you can feel in the Disney World amusement parks. The médium quality of construction probably adds some of that same feeling of fakeness or pretention. For it to be gated actually goes against the arquitectural concept expressed by the original creator. Like having a wild animal in a zoo and pretend to be protecting it. It can't be catalogued as a city, it is more like a large neighborhood invaded by the new rich snob culture that can't see the difference between a faccade and authentic architecture. The owners belongs to the old and tradicional most wealthy families of Guatemala but the local architects that build it lack the taste and class to give it the touch of excellence that such immense investment was expecting to achieve.
Urban city, si ciudad de guatemala tiene una muy alta taza de criminalidad, pero no, cayala es artificial, "caquera", opulenta, es un centro comercial enorme, carísimo y sobrevalorado

Preach!
No. Just, no. As a guatemalan i can tell you, we dont think of Cayalá as an actual city. Ask anyone who actually lives here and we will tell you, ITS A SHOPPING MALL. One built and owned by corrupt rich individuals involved in national political scandals.
Finally someone not blinded by this. And reminder that it destroyed hundreds of trees without permission for it to be constructed.
A city like that is not only beautiful, but it will generate new income into the Guatemalan economy in taxes and new jobs.
The TH-camr es from Costa Rica 🇨🇷
TheHaha 😂costa rica is full of crime now. The TH-camr has envy because Costa Rica 🇨🇷 is going down
Guatemala 🇬🇹 city 🏙️ has more people than the whole country of Costa Rica 🇨🇷 costa pobre
Costa Rica 🇨🇷 now is full of crime
Que viva Guatemala 🇬🇹
Why use the word 'rebuild' instead of "build"? It haven't been built before nor were there buildings there before.
watch Kennys House on South Park, I am sorry to have to refrence that show, but urbanization is summed up by buying a loft next to Kennys house.
cause they are trying to copy la antigua guatemala
Interesting but sad that you make it sound like the rest of Guatemala is extremely dangerous which is not true. Safely in GT it is improving and recent crime indicators at similar level than Costa Rica which a lot of foreigners consider to be the safest county in LATAM
specially cause our government is so good right
It's beautiful, the only thing needed is a mega fountain like the one in Vegas. Water features make a city more appealing
Es simplemente pura en vidia
This is like any other subdivision where money is welcome in, but the people who are bringing that money are not welcome to stay & enjoy what their money pays for. As long as wealthy people want to live there & can decide what happens to their compounds, it will be fine.
I have to admit that your approach is a little harsh for my taste, but at the same time you might be right. Thank you for your Analyzes to Cayala.
this is the worst report on Cayala
Thanks for the feedback, sorry to hear that. Could you perhaps elaborate on that?
el chavo es tico
this is just an outdoor mall
This is accessible to ALL !!! Anyone can enter Cayalá. Stop spreading missinformation and half-truths. Places like Detroit and many more in the USA could really learn a lot from Guatemala.
I came here from Canada 8 years ago I bought a house I have a 4 year old daughter in a private college beautiful Guatemalan traditional wife it's all about what you're up to in the streets?
Well, at least it is open to anyone
And I don't know if they are wrong, but this reaches people should also contribute with the government to build better houses for the rest of people and control crimes.
In the end, if you work and you make money with honesty, you are free to do what you want with your money. It is the liberty of democracy.
Your perspective on social responsibility is thought-provoking, thank you for sharing!
This is Not a City is only a District in Zone 16 in Guatemala city, theres a Few of these in Guatemala City, Condado Naranjo is Another One
Wow an apartment costing less than a years income damn. Where im from its more like 10x the average years income
It's a bubble where privileged and corrupt politicians live
You speak half truths.
Thanks for your honesty, appreciate the feedback! Please let us know what we left out.
@@UrbanCityExplorer_ The truth, and nothing but the truth. its hilarious that builders visit and find not one problem, well I can tell you one problem just by looking at it, drone shots. NO one flies around a town up in the air. They walk, on the ground, on legs.
Are you talking about PHILADELPHIA , USA ? Not Guatemala city. Go to the sh
👍👍👍
Sin jardines ni parques :(
Sorry, but that's not a city. It's a mall, themed around a city that is only a few blocks long and wide. So it's more of an example of a walkable neighborhood than a walkable city. For instance, there is no such thing as public transportation.
yea... its just a big open Mall you can resume it like that
As a Guatemalan, I hate Cayala. All of this long winded comment can be summarized in stating that I hate Cayala for what it is, not what it wanted to be.
exactamente amigo
as a guatemalean cayala is a show off, an overpriced mall for the richest of people here
Hey brother if you don't like it so what....that is your opinion........
Beautiful place I love that place........
@@maximilianescobar3564 and that is why you have to give your "opinion" as well isn't it? To convince yourself
@@rotorairgroup8409 it's completely artificial

Urban city, si ciudad de guatemala tiene una muy alta taza de criminalidad, pero no, cayala es artificial, "caquera", opulenta, es un centro comercial enorme, carísimo y sobrevalorado
This TH-camr show talk about his country is full of crime. Guatemala 🇬🇹 is a great country. Why he does go and make a videos of the zombis cities 🏙️ in his country. We should report this youtuber on TH-cam.
Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear the video was not up to your liking. We based our information off numerous articles we researched online. It's unfortunate to read that this still lead to an unbalanced view in your opinion. We'll do our best to avoid this in the future. :)
@@UrbanCityExplorer_ unfortunately you should go to Guatemala 🇬🇹 in person first then you can criticize, plus you don’t even know that there are more zones for example zone 4,9,10,13,14,15,16 with rich people too. You are following articles from people who write ✍️ without even look 👀 their own countries that those countries are worse than Guatemala 🇬🇹 you are poor guy with small brain 🧠.
all countries are great countries
but in here, amigo, in guatemala, crime is very high due to a very profound poverty, that we are responsible for
Cayala is not a city, its an overvalued mall for the richest of people here
and its all artificial, its just trying to imitate La Antigua Guatemala
"promosm" 🤗
Omg The worst video ever... Guatemala is NOT full of crime. And the story you tell about Cayala is completely false!
En todas partes del mundo hay violencia y de las meras
Full of crime ?? C’mon do not generalize
Some people just talk because they want to say something or because they have mouths but the true is that there is crime all around the world and Guate is not exception.
And there are other more negatives that just say the same thing just because in general they don't like people have shit as brains.
Whattt!??? Nooo, this was a beautiful forest, they cut all the trees! And built a big white concrete elephant. A very expensive fortress, it should have built around the trees, with a green design and architecture inspired in our country, not in European architecture.😢
