Agreed. I dont ask for a spark arrestor, simply an easy option to put one in should it be required. It would also help with repacking the silencer when that day comes.
I race....motocross. I dont want a trail bike but I do want to take my motocross bike on the trail from time to time. Remember these are “my least favorite things” not flaws in the bike. I LOVE THIS BIKE.
Its a motox bike, it dosent need a spark arrestor. The stock silencer is really good, buy an aftermarket slip on like an FMF if you want an arrestor. Dont be lazy, remove the glide plate to change the oil. Cable clutch is light, reliable and cheap. The YZ dosent need a hydraulic clutch. Stock chain is a good quality D.I.D good for 40 hours. Learn how to tighten and check your chain properly and lube after every moto. Brand new chains have side flex. Stock fuel tank is bigger enough for at least 3x20 min motos. I usually top up after 2. You can't do motox and trail riding with the same bike an expect it to be good for both. Stick to one or buy a second bike.
Thanks for watching the video! I understand your logic. However it is also a dirtbike. The point I am making is that you shouldnt make a machine so discipline specific that it gives you no options. Most riders who buy a motocross bike will trail ride from time to time. I dont want a spark arrestor from the factory, I would just like it if they made it a touch easier to put one on. The slip on silencers are over $300 here in Western Canada. Not cost effective for how little I am going to trail ride. I am impeccable with my chain maintenance with correct chain adjustments, cleaning and lubing after every ride. Im sure I could make the chain last a lot longer if I was a lot lighter and slower. I am just too heavy for that to be a reality. I would love to know what size you are and at what level you are racing to get that kind of life out of your stock chain. I can only get two motos out of a tank of fuel and she is pretty much empty. I am not the average size rider however at 6’4” and north of 230lbs.
@@westkrider1132 you are an idiot lmao Dude it’s the same bike with a headlight and a wide ratio trans which is probably actually better for motor cross track
@@Anthonysmith-ic8ef the suspension that comes stock on a wr is way too soft for Motocross and with a wide ratio transmission you can never find the right gear. You end up having to ride the whole track and only one or two gears. I've tried it before, it doesn't work
Good review and good points! Not sure why everyone gets emotional when you review the bike and give your honest opinion. I think it’s important for real-world information like this to exist. My friend also has a 2020 YZ450F and we both do lots of trail riding. Works great! Thanks for the video.
Thanks, I really appreciate that. I wanted to give a perspective outside what the magazines and journos all give. I have 18 hours on the bike now and the thing is absolutely flawless! I couldnt be happier with my purchase. Cheers!
Why everybody in the comments mad at him for riding a 450f on trails but there is people who buy dirt bikes just to do wheelies on the street. Yet everybody thinks that cool?
They put the bolts on the back of the muffler because it is a race machine and with dirt mud and rocks kicking up, falling, or other peoples wheels getting stuck in between the rear fender (yes this does happen), it is easier for those bolts to break off if they were on the back side of the muffler.
Drain Bolt! For sure, the biggest pain in the ass on this bike! Not necessarily because its horizontal, but because you can't get any kind of torque wrench in there to torque it up to 20Nm. I know you can do it by 'feel' but I like to use a torque wrench. After all Yamaha specifies a torque for it! Only way I could make it work was to grind down a 12mm socket by app 6mm. In general, I have found the Yamaha far more difficult to maintain than my previous KTMs. Like you though, I still love the bike!
you should have gotten the 450 fx. there is no way you outdo the suspension. its the same other then some valving wich is simple. I also got 160 hours out of the chain and sprockets on my bike
All of my A level buddies at the track are getting 10-40 hrs out of their chain and sprockets. Yours is definitely the exception. Sounds like you may not race at all. I had to work to get my F suspension stiff enough to handle my size. Dont even want to think about fighting the FX. Not to mention a wide ratio transmission, 18” rear wheel, softer frame and kickstand to fight. The F was the bike I needed and wanted.
@@westkrider1132 fair enough. I'm pretty light at 150 so the suspension is good on the fx for me though I dont really go to the track much but when i did it never bottomed out. I ride mostly offroad hillclimbs and such. my rear sprocket was extremely warm at 150 hours but was still working
@@westkrider1132 I have never seen a rear sprocket wear like the one did on my fx though . and even with the 2.2 gallon tank on mine I can run that thing out of gas in like 2.5 or 3 hours of hard fast riding
Nice! Glad you are happy with your ride. I am about 85 lbs heavier than you which makes a huge difference. I would love to ride an FX, I just know it wasnt the bike for my particular use. Yamaha makes incredible machines and more people should be out on them!
Thanks for watching the video. Most of my riding is practicing and racing motocross; on a track. The FX has a softer frame, softer suspension, wide ratio transmission, kickstand, heavier flywheel and 18” back tire. I have exactly the bike I need and it is far cheaper to buy an IMS tank and spark arrestor than it is to try make a FX track competitive. Like I said in the conclusion. I love this bike and my complaints are petty. This bike is almost flawless!
you don't even need to tune the suspension... I have the 2020 250fx and the suspension is STIFF as hell. Its hard to even trail ride with it at lower speeds because you just deflect over everything.
westkrider I agree with what you're saying about your choice and needs, but its not reasonable to lodge these things as "complaints" against a RACE bike, which is what the f is. 100% of f owners (minus you) would remove the spark arrester and run a big tank half empty all the time. Every bike will need minor mods to suit an end user but that doesn't mean every manufacturer is missing the mark. FWIW I own a 450fx and use it similarly as you.
You do realise you have brought a full blown race bike and not a enduro bike although I'm on my 6th yz450f and all I ride is enduro, I think that you are under estimating the distance you can get out of a tank , I can go out for a good 2 hour ride no problem, im thinking that you should have got a wr450 or what I am in the process of getting right now which is a 2021 yz450fx and im mainly getting this bike for the electric start and larger fuel tank, there wasn't many people riding them off a track way back when I got my yz426f but watching one of Adam Riemans TH-cam videos a long time ago when he was setting the yz450f's up for enduro and was doing really well in comps got me thinking, im not sure with the yz450f but the fx you can whip your phone out and change maps or even customise one that suits your riding which is what im learning to do atm , the fx is only a extra $1500 here in Australia but it's right to go to get rec registration, the head light is better than putting a kit on a 450f because it runs of a battery , better gearing , electric start , map change with your mobile, well worth the 1500 in my mind ... happy riding
Thanks for sharing. I absolutely realize I bought a full blown race bike as I race motocross and hare scrambles. I used to ride the pro class but am just a vet expert now. When I was racing pro all I ever did was race full MX bikes in hare scrambles. I find it funny that there are so few that race different disciplines. It really rounds out your bikes skills. On the 450F it also has electric start and is fully programmable through the app. It is an amazing machine!
@@westkrider1132 i have the wr450f and dont want an hydrolic clutch to leak in the middle of the wood. I buy yamaha for reliability that is a sign of reliability to me. Hope they dont fall in the trap of following the crowd where it isn't necessary 🤷♂️
Fair comment. I myself have never seen or heard of a hydraulic clutch failing so was curious if you had. My heavy machinery background showed me in heavy equipment the hydraulic clutches are the most reliable in the industry. I would be surprised if it changes for dirtbikes. I would love to hear from someone who had one fail.
I'm not super picky with either one. Hydraulic clutches are pretty bulletproof and maintenance free. Never once did I need to replace the line or have a leak on my 2006 KTM. Only replaced the fluid when I got the bike. My friend's 2019 YZ clutch pull feels butter smooth and super precise. Honestly, I wouldn't even bother changing it. Yamaha did a really good job with their 450 lineup. Trying to get a new WR450F once summer is over!
I can’t believe how many people tell you to get a WR. I like moto bikes in the woods. 19 inch rear doesn’t matter to me. My average NW trail ride is 35 miles, so the stock tank is ok . The only thing I would put a non o-ring chain on would be a 125. I hate wide ratio transmissions. The manufacturers don’t want to admit to the governments that moto bikes will be used in the forest, that is why they won’t have anything to do with a spark arrestor.
I absolutely agree. Go check any cross country race starting line and a majority of them are moto bikes. I have been told by several very fast pro riders that it is way easier to make a moto bike fast in the bush than it is to make a WR fast on a track.
I don’t know too many people who buy a bike and want to keep on the stock exhaust it’s an eyesore. That’s probably why they don’t put much options into a stock part. Should’ve got a trail bike man.
Yamaha doesn't go with hydrolic simply because you can still adjust it as you ride/race. Hydrolic you cannot, and once you cook that clutch, you are stuck. Ricky Carmichael could've, Chad Reed could've, but this Yamaha clutch is still smoother, stronger and more durable than a hydrolic. Also, I may have missed it, but why did you have to repack a brand new silencer/arrester? One more thing.... It a RACE MX bike. Should've looked at a the FX or WR. You will never wear out that clutch, transmission or the bike anyway.
Those are valid points but I am definitely not a clutch abuser so the cable clutch is not the best choice. The resistance on the cable will change through the moto with the clutch how it is. With a hydraulic clutch the feel is firm and consistent even with thermal changes. That is a moot point however if the rider is a clutch abuser. That said the clutch works well. I am nitpicking at best. Where I ride in the desert mountains there is severe risk of fire in the summer months so riding areas make it mandatory to put a spark arrestor in. Im sure the WR or the FX are great bikes if you stay off the track but I ride-race MX 90% of the time but want to be able to take this bike on the trails. I would be more than happy to ride with anyone who says the MX version is not a great trail bike! The MX bike is capable of hitting the podium in a hare scramble with nothing but hand guards and a skid plate. Ive done it many times. The WR or FX are not so adept at winning motos and I cant afford 2 bikes.....
No spark arrestor because the bike is designed for closed course racing. Small gas tank because the bike is designed for closed course racing. Stiff suspension to ride moto and supercross (closed course racing).
I was not suggesting a need for a spark arrestor. I was asking for easier access under the silencer cap. The easier access would also be required for regular repacking of the silencer; also required for closed course racing. Bikes designed for closed course racing had 2 gallon plus tanks for decades. You dont have to fill a bigger tank to the top to race motocross. I can assure you this isnt stiff suspension. It is incredibly plush suspension on a motocross track and well tuned to pro riding on the trails. Look at the starting line of the pro class at your next cross country race and let me know the percentage of “closed course racing” bikes. Pros dont ride WR’s.
Awesome video man. Even though the "pro's" in the comments think they know everything. I'm in the same boat as you. I'm about to buy a 21 yz450f to use on track and trail my only concern is fuel tank. I wonder if you could get the 2.2 gal fx tank to fit
That is a really good questions. I was told the FX actually had a slightly different frame and that it would not fit. I would love to hear if someone was able to do it. I plan on doing a Hare Scramble or two between motocross races.
@@westkrider1132 thanks for the feed back. I will investigate and find out the possibilities. In my mind they should have put a bigger tank and the pros could have adjusted accordingly
If all I did was trails with the odd foray onto the track you would have a good point but I do 90% track laps. I definitely bought the best bike for my needs but they narrow the focus so tight that there is hardly any cross over between disciplines anymore.
You should look into a crf 450rx has most the things your looking for i recently got one and i am really impressing with it. I love the blue though such a beautiful bike.
All of these because you bought the wrong bike. You bought a race bike not a trail bike. You should have got the 450fx. its meant for trail and track. I have the 2020 250fx and the suspension is VERY stiff for trails. So stiff that at lower speeds your bounced around like a rag doll and im sending it to be revalved. Also the FX gas tanks are 2.2 gallons and plenty big enough for a day of riding. You messed up not Yamaha
Thanks for watching the video. The WR is a great bike I have no doubt. The FX also has its place however. I race primarily motocross and have also raced cross country a lot. The motocross suspension is great in the bush for me. The FX would solve two minor inconveniences I have but create many more. Softer frame, heavier bike, wide ration transmission, 18” rear wheel, kickstand, heavier flywheel would be dangerous riding on a track at a high level. Remember my 5 “least favorite things” are not true problems. They are just my least favorite things and help give a different perspective on the bike ownership. Watch the conclusion and it clearly states these are minor nitpicks. This is the perfect bike for me.
Assuming I didnt race motocross that would be a great solution. I do however race motocross and need every ounce of performance I can get out of the suspension and motor which the trail bikes lack.
For a slower rider Im sure it would be fine, but it has a softer frame, 18” rear wheel, and wide ratio transmission. You wont see any 220lb guys clearing triples out of a tight corner on one of those. I am 6’4” and 220lbs so the 250 wasnt even a consideration. I have even had to gear the 450F down to get a little more power coming through corners in 3rd. The performance of my bike is exactly what I wanted. None of the things I mentioned would make the bike one millisecond slower on the race track.
i had a kx 85 it was wicked fast in my teens, i'd like to get back into it at some point, i'm deffinately a two stroke kinda person with the powerband heheh
I grew up learning and racing the two strokes. I loved them! Something about the smell of premix exhaust that still gets me revved up! That being said I grew to the point the four stroke is definitely an advantage for me. Hopefully you can get out on the dirt again soon!
Professional test rider Kris Keefer said his chain only lasted 7 hrs testing this same bike. I am going out on a limb and guessing you arent as heavy as I am either.
I sure wish it was that simple. I ride 90% of the time on the motocross track. I also however like to take it on the trails now and then. The WR or FX just wouldnt cut it on the track. I am a big guy and the YZF is already on the soft side for me. I cant even imagine having softer suspension!
I don't see anything about this true. If you can't ride it in the trails. Get the fx with different suspension, want track. Keep the f... And really? The skid plate design? If you don't like it buy a crf they usually come with one. Hardly any manufacturers put them on the bike because some people don't like them. Those cases are designed to take some hits, hints why skid plates are optional from damage, nics, and other contact. I don't have a skid plate on my 19 250f yet and it's taken some slams from bottoming out, rocks, logs, etc... I did order one though but only for the fact that I got the frame powder coated. The spark arrestor can be fixed with a different set up. The chain, well the chain looks like it doesn't get cleaned to often nor oiled a lot. My stock chain last 40 hrs only because I didn't take care of it. Chains last however often you maintain it. I ran a sunstar chain last time I replaced it ans it last 85hrs. Because I tool care of it. Now I'm using pro-x and so far. So good. Take care of the small stuff that's what matters... The fuel tank, it's a motocross bike, not meant to go far but run slower speeds at higher rpms. Remember they only go to 35-40 mph. Cross country you can go as fast as you want for as long as you want and "f" is meant to stay at rpms for power. I understand why you state all these... However, not every bike can be the same because that would be boring and everything would be the same. I don't see anything but petty complaining about the smallest stuff.
Dude I have the Yamaha 450 raced class A.. you complain about silly things. The gas in these last more than you think. Yamaha is ahead of everyone else with tuning app for 5 years. My chain has lasted me 20 hours now so I don’t know if you lube your chain or over adjust it which will cause stretching. The clutch thing if you’re trail riding who cares racing you pull it in a lot more and I’m not complaining ya it might be nice but with the tuning app you’re saving a crap load on not buying aftermarket exhaust which this bike doesn’t need at all it’s fast. My friend has kx450 he was getting sick of me pulling from him so he bought exhaust and still pulling him so he tore the motor down to change to a high compression piston. So he spent over $1000 just to hang in there. Oh and his cylinder already had piston slap marks in the cylinder with only 17 hours. So good thing you didn’t get a Kawasaki! My son yz250f has a 150 hrs and we just tore the motor down cylinder had no scratches whatsoever. Also still started 1st or 2nd kick.
As you're finding out from these comments the blu cru are more toxic than even the ktm fanboys these days, as you can't say anything negative without having the lynch mob after you. The yz450 isn't perfect but it's damn near it
I only think they make a difference on bikes that arent running properly and have carbon buildups in the exhaust. Otherwise why arent there fires started on the edges of motocross tracks where none of the bikes are running them?
This is a review for a 450f, you shouldn't be talking about how the tank is a 1.6g tank when this is a track bike. The 450fx is the cross country/trail bike with the 2.2gal tank.
I understand what you are saying but why am I not able to take my track bike onto the trails from time to time. The FX and WR are not a fit for my needs. How much of a competitive advantage is a 1.6 gal tank to a 2 gal like they had on the first 450f bikes. I assure you if you dont make a living racing, you would never notice the difference on the track. That being said my complaints are overall very minor. As I point out in the video I love this bike!
I raced for 15 years. Cross country and motocross. Held a pro license in both. What is it I am missing? A WR or an FX would be a lot further from the bike I am looking for. I ride 90% on the track and though I am over 40 now I still clear the triples and tables and anything else on the track. I dont think a kickstand, softer frame and suspension, heavier flywheel and wide ratio transmission would help in any way. Listen to the video again. “This bike is amazing”. This bike couldnt be more perfect and hence why I had to nitpick to even find petty complaints.
How about yz bikes durability for wheelies..i heard some people saying it blew up too quickly...is that true or false...i need answers..plz anyone here to explain me what's the trueth
If you do some research I believe you will find the YZ is one of if not THE most reliable bike out there! As for mine it has been absolutely flawless even though I have abused it more than I have liked. Always keep fresh oil in it and clean/change the filter at good intervals and you wont have a problem at all. I have heard of a few YZ’s blowing up from pulling dirt by the air filter but my belief is that it was operator error and the owner didnt seat the filter correctly on the housing. I take extra care when puting the air filter back to ensure it is seated correctly. Flawless performance from mine so far.
I spent the fall 100% at the motocross track so didnt get a chance to find out exactly how far I can go on a tank. The longest trail ride I did according to GPS on it was around 20km and it was pretty empty when I got back to the truck. We will see if I have time in the spring to try a range test.
I’m 17 and 5 8. I have a 2008 Rmz250 and all the boys have something to say because it’s a Suzuki. Yet I’m the fastest guy on the track unless it’s a pro day. I would recommend a 250 for you a 450 can be too fast so you brake earlier actually making you slower. I would recommend a 250 🤙🏼
Amazing how many people dont know the fastest bikes offroad are the pure motocross bikes. Go check out the pro starting line of your next hare scramble in your area.
So I’m looking into getting either a 2021 YZ 450f or YZ 450XF I have really no need to ride motocross besides maybe hitting the track every now and then. But I ride mainly off-road trails do you think that the XF model is the better way to go I’m not really a small rider I’m 6,2 so I’m worried about the XF being to soft in the trails but don’t feel the need for a true race bike that being said either one is a awesome bike just not sure what to do . Any input thanks.
Getting a new bike is always exciting!! From what you describe I would think the FX is probably the ideal choice for you. I bought the F because I ride mostly on the track with some trails thrown in now and then. If most of what you do is trail riding then the FX may be a little soft on the track but perfect on trails, the F would probably be perfect on the track but a little harsh on trails. Im 6’4” and 235 so I know what it is like to be a big rider. I am amazing how well the stock suspension has performed overall. That being said I am moving to stiffer springs.
@@westkrider1132 I really do appreciate the info back I do think the XF is probably the best for me I live in Alaska and mostly ride the technical trails we got so I didn’t want like what your saying to harsh of a bike for that but still want some power when I need it. By the way awesome video it’s cool when you can find real people talking about the things they feel could be worked on a little.
Thanks very much. I appreciate that. I just found that all of the professional reviews all look at exactly the same things and wanted to give a different take on it and hopefully help give some useful information. Good luck with your bike purchase! Trust me there is no wrong decision. The F or FX will both do what you ask them to, they just have different personalities doing it. Cheers
Hello, I’m starting relatively new to dirt bikes and I was looking into the 2020 YZ450F I’m a experienced rider I had a 2013 ninja 600 and I don’t want something I’m going to get bored of or something that will kill me, any advice? Thanks in advance❤️
Thanks for checking out the channel. The number one thing to keep in mind with dirtbikes; much more so than streetbikes is that a good rider can make a slow bike fast. Too much bike can make a new rider slow. I cant say enough good things about the YZ450 but if you are doing any kind of technical riding like single track trails, it is a handful! For a smaller rider the YZ250F is actually just as fast. The ninja 600 is no slouch but offroad is a different animal. Get the bike you feel comfortable on. You will learn the fastest. If you are into motocross go for the “F” version of the Yamaha. If you are doing mostly trail riding then the “FX” is probably a better setup. Are you around the Okanagan? The guys at Kelowna Yamaha can get you pointed in the right direction if you are.
If your new to motocross bikes I suggest you find someone you can ride the 250f then the 450. 450 sounds small to your street bike but they have more hp in that one cylinder than your street bike and they pack a punch if you happen to get whisky throttle. Yamaha does have rider appreciation days you can test any bike you want that they have there at the track just look it up and see where they’re going to be or ask a dealer near you if they have a used one you can test out.
Haha ya it can be tricky. If the front of your seat is the same as mine there are notches like finger holes on right and left. Place your fingers in either side and pop that cover off and the gas cap is right underneath. No tools required.
Unfortunately the heavier bike, softer frame and suspension and heavier flywheel would not be what I am looking for. This 450F is darn near perfect for me!
Complaining about a spark arrestor on an MX race bike is about the dumbest thing I've heard. Closely followed by complaining about the size of the tank. Yamaha make a bike that is designed to do what you want. You bought the wrong bike.
If you watch the video you will see in my conclusion that the bike is amazing and exactly the right bike for me. My complaints are petty because there is so little to find fault with on this bike. There are no true downfalls with this machine.
Thanks for the comment. The added weight, kickstand, softer frame and suspension, heavier flywheel, 18” rear wheel and wide ratio transmission make it a great trail bike but it isnt realistic to ride a WR on a track and expect to be competitive. Most of my riding is on a motocross track so that definitely wouldnt be the choice for me.
@@westkrider1132 I totally agree. But... if you have the time and money, you can turn that trail bunny into an enduro/mx monster. Ive had friends that have all bought yz450s and ive ridden and experienced them all. But ultimately I bought a WR. After doing some research and some investments I've added the necessary parts to make this bike ride just as good as its big brother ( yz 450 ) at the track. Yes there can be some downsides like weight and suspension, but again if you have to time and the money, you could really make this machine just as good as the yz. Although sometimes doing all that work might become a hassle. And it just depends on rider preference...But for me the WR is totally the ultimate bike, and the bike for all reasons. But your yz450f 2021 graphics look real gnarly.
Sounds like you have a sweet ride setup! I would love to try a race tuned WR and see how good they can be. Back in the day I did a lot of racing and the mx bike was always the choice of the fast guys. I absolutely love this bike even on gnarly single track. That being said I have no doubt your WR is a beast!
Considering I have raced competitively in both MX and Hare Scrambles I am very comfortable with my statements. I was very clear that this video was opinion and nothing more. It is incredibly hard to fault this bike!
@@westkrider1132 just seems like the things you are looking for are on a WR more so than the MX. Sounds like you got this bike for suspension alone which you could have had done cheap.. I highly doubt you're skilled enough to outride these suspensions.
It’s obvious you don’t race. Yamaha is top of the game when it comes to racing that’s how they become so popular. Winning races is what counts. Sorry you can’t take it through the woods. Change the tank or buy a wood bike. Don’t try to convert a motocross bike to a wood bike and then complain it’s too much like a motocross bike. Change your oil every race and your air cleaner every ride, and it’s obvious you don’t race much which is what these bikes are made for.
Haha not quite. Vet Expert class. 90% of my riding is MX. I use exactly what the bike is for. I dont want a second bike just for a bit of woods riding. Nothing I suggest would slow down a MX racer at all. Having held a pro racing license at one point in MX and Hare Scrambles, my opinion is worth considering.
Why would you ever complain about a wired clutch over a mechanical clutch do you wanna really be working on a hydraulic clutch like come on like come on that's just more money you need to be not be spending.
I would speculate by your comment you have never owned a hydraulic clutch. It is the reason your brakes on your car or truck are hyd; it is the most maintenance free reliable set up out there. With a cable clutch as your clutch heats up the release point moves and changes. With a hydraulic setup it never does. More consistent controls allow for faster lap times.
There is so much flexibility in the handlebar position. I have it as far forward in the mounts as it will go because I am a pretty big guy. I am really happy with it.
@@westkrider1132 yeah I'm 6"2 and I had to move mine all the way forward and I feel like I want them further still, and if this were my list, the spark arrestor would be #1 or #2 with the chain being the other
Thanks for watching the video! The X looks like a great bike and if all I did were trails then it would be perfect. The kickstand is not allowed on a motocross track and the 18” rear wheel is a proven competitive disadvantage for motocross. Also the heavier flywheel and undervalved suspension wouldnt work for me.
Not at all! I have ridden a lot of bikes over the years and this bike feels amazing. I have had it on hard packed chopped up tracks, smooth sandy tracks and single track rocky bush trails and have never found it does anything that I dont cause. It does exactly what you tell it to. And it does it well!
Congrats! Dont get me wrong these arent problem. These are 5 inconveniences that I have found. As I say at the end of the video they are petty and this is truly the best motocross bike made in my opinion. Enjoy your new ride!!
My experience has proved to me that Yamaha builds the most reliable bikes out there. You can ride this bike hard with no worries! Just do the proper servicing and maintenance and you will love it!
If you're looking for a bike with a spark arrestor, and a bigger tank, you should have bought a trail bike. Don't buy a bike made for Motocross, on a closed course, and then complain about it not having things that come stock on a trail bike. Kind of pointless
Since 90% of my riding is on a motocross track I thought it relevant. Most people who purchase a bike want the ability to ride either track or trail at their choice. That is my only point. None of the things I pointed out would slow it down on the track at all. They would however make it more buyer friendly.
As an experienced MX racer I understand completely. I used to race hare scrambles and there was a decent cross over between machines. All I had to do was change suspension settings to take the trail junk better and then a few clicks and I was back in MX mode. All I am saying is the few things I have suggested wouldnt affect anyone but the fastest pros on the MX track but it would add versatility to the machine for the average owner.
Ok the 450 Yamaha is a rubbish bike. Here's why. Its heavy its wide, its wrap around exhaust gets caught in your boots and burns them. Its air intake is up in front of you and makes a terrible vacuum cleaner noise when you crank the throttle. It vibrates worse than any other 4 stroke, also cleaning the air filter is difficult as debris easily falls into the intake when you remove the filter. Plus all the things you mentioned. They also aren't as powerful and reliable as everybody says. The clutch gets really rattley with only a few hours! The ktm, husky and kawi are all better options
Most of the bikes aren't gonna hit the track.... Lol almost all of them are gonna hit the track. I have gotten a 47 Mile loop on my stock tank on my 2012. They sip fuel on trails
Western trail riding ? Should have got a ktm 300 xc.....murders that yamaha in the trails....i have both bikes, a 2014yz and a 2021 ktm 300xc, yamaha is meant for open plains or the track and will probably be collecting dust for the forseeable future.......tatatata 2 stroke !!!!!
That is great advice. I typically do that right from new but I have been out of it so long I was curious if the stock chain technology had improved. I find the orings really wear out the chain guides fast though. Going to try the Renthal next.
I didnt mind the KTM but the suspension definitely didnt measure up to the YZ for me and I find the KTM seem to have slower pull from the engine. When you are a bigger guy like me that makes a big difference. I just thought Yamaha should be puting something that is an easy upgrade on their bike. Both KTM and now Honda have it.
So you are saying I could make better lap times with a wide ratio transmission, softer frame and suspension, heavier flywheel and kickstand? Doesnt make much sense to me. This bike is amazing!! Just sharing my least favourite things about the bike as the video states.
No I'm saying that bikes now or more specialized if you want a motocross bike then you go out and buy motocross bike for the track if you want to Woods by you go out and get a Woods bike for the woods. It didn't used to be like that you had to compromise
I agree and I understand their philosophy, but I feel the manufacturers are leaving out the customers like me who race motocross and cross country. The full on mx bike is the best compromise in my case. I can live with them making it harder for me to do both on. Doesnt mean I cant complain about it ;)
I have spent the last month and a half riding nothing but tracks. This bike is practically flawless which is why my least favorite things are not monumental just petty little quibbles. The bike is simply amazing!
ur only putting a spark arrester once and thats it 😂😂😂😂. who cares ab a damn spark arrester its not an oil change that you’d normally do every 2-4 rides. just put it in and ride
nvm HAHAHAHAHAHA that oil change bolt really hitten diff now 😂😂😂😂😂😂 i guess i was wrong ab the oil thing. i kinda commented early so i didnt see the drain plug
Remember these are “my” least favourite things. When there is very little to complain about the complaints will seem petty to some. This is an amazing bike overall and I would buy it again 100 times out of 100!
The only solution the KTM offers is the hyd clutch. The KTM SX wouldnt solve any of my other issues. This Yamaha is the best bike I have ever owned hands down.
That would definitely change your needs! We live in an amazing mountain valley with hundreds of miles of dedicated off highway vehicle trails. Remember my conclusion. This bike is the closest thing to perfect I have ever ridden. I had to think hard to even find a few things to squabble about! It is the perfect bike for what I do and how I ride.
The yz450f is not designed for trail riding, that’s why there is no spark arrestor
Agreed. I dont ask for a spark arrestor, simply an easy option to put one in should it be required. It would also help with repacking the silencer when that day comes.
westkrider it’s a motocross bike , get a wr
@@westkrider1132 you could of got a wr. Most of the things you hate about it the wr has it

Maybe try out the 450FX. You’re gonna have to make certain sacrifices for other benefits yamaha is a great brand tho!
IT IS A MOTOCROSS BIKE!!! THEY WONT PUT TRAIN COMPONENTS ON IT WHEN ITS MADE FOR RACING!!!
I race....motocross. I dont want a trail bike but I do want to take my motocross bike on the trail from time to time. Remember these are “my least favorite things” not flaws in the bike. I LOVE THIS BIKE.
Oh shoot, I searched FX.Why did this come up?
Sounds like you should'a bought a WR dude
Thanks for watching the video! Unfortunately I primarily ride and race motocross so the WR isnt the bike for me.
Nosh&%
@@westkrider1132 you are an idiot lmao Dude it’s the same bike with a headlight and a wide ratio trans which is probably actually better for motor cross track
@@Anthonysmith-ic8ef the suspension that comes stock on a wr is way too soft for Motocross and with a wide ratio transmission you can never find the right gear. You end up having to ride the whole track and only one or two gears.

I am a huge fan of the blue as well!
Cheers!
For one thing; it's a race model
Why everybody in the comments mad at him for riding a 450f on trails but there is people who buy dirt bikes just to do wheelies on the street. Yet everybody thinks that cool?
yes
I just run the GYTR skid Plate and pull it off every time I clean it and do oil. It’s 3 bolts. Atleast on my 2020.
Just so you know almost every 450 stock exhaust is like that. Pivots at the end cap and bolts in the front
Yes I am aware. I am happy they had the screws at all. They used to all be rivets.
Get a ddc sprocket. Hands down the longest lasting sprockets and best chain EVER! Used in extreme enduros and hare scrambles
You bought a race bike and reviewed a trail bike. You should have bought the fx and tuned the suspension to your liking.
Cable clutch is NOT a problem. Hydrolic clutch isn't reliable as cable...
I am really curious how many hyd clutches you have seen fail.
I think the point of the smaller tank is to save some weight because it is kinda heavy compared to other brands. Good review!
You are absolutely right that they wanted weight savings. I had a terrible time coming up with true complaints for this bike so I had to nitpick :)
“Most of these dirt bikes are never gonna hit the motor Ross track” that is not true, in the USA maybe so. But the bike was built for the track.
Agreed!
You definitely should’ve gone for the FX over the F. It rides like the F but more capacity and a little softer suspension.
If all I did was trails with the odd foray onto the track you would have a good point but I do 90% track laps. I definitely bought the best bike for my needs but they narrow the focus so tight that there is hardly any cross over between disciplines anymore.
Beautiful bike
You mean most of the guys who buy these are riding motocross tracks. You need a trail bike. You bought a motocross race bike.
But the fly wheel isn't right
Like everyone else said, WR450f or YZ450FX woulda been the bike to get for the gripes you raised. :D
Assuming I didnt race motocross that would be a great solution. I do however race motocross and need every ounce of performance I can get out of the suspension and motor which the trail bikes lack.
@@westkrider1132 the YZ250FX with the suspension made stiffer with the clickers woulda been fine for the track. Imo.
It's a MX racer Not an FX. IT'S not designed for trail, nor do they want more weight for MOTOCROSS.
the 2021 Wr has a hydraulic clutch
i had a kx 85 it was wicked fast in my teens, i'd like to get back into it at some point, i'm deffinately a two stroke kinda person with the powerband heheh
I grew up learning and racing the two strokes. I loved them! Something about the smell of premix exhaust that still gets me revved up! That being said I grew to the point the four stroke is definitely an advantage for me. Hopefully you can get out on the dirt again soon!
Buddy the chain is the same as 2020 and has lasted me 15hours no problems, in full motocross conditions.
Professional test rider Kris Keefer said his chain only lasted 7 hrs testing this same bike. I am going out on a limb and guessing you arent as heavy as I am either.
Should have gotten a wr or fx they have what you want the yzf is a race bike not a trial or road bike
I sure wish it was that simple. I ride 90% of the time on the motocross track. I also however like to take it on the trails now and then. The WR or FX just wouldnt cut it on the track. I am a big guy and the YZF is already on the soft side for me. I cant even imagine having softer suspension!
But the fly wheel isn't right
Buy another bike, problem solved.
How long would you say you can go when your out in the bush on a tank of fuel?
i loke how this is convincing me to buy a yamaha lol, i like the structure of this vid, ill sub for the part 2
I run my new 450 in and through the chain.
Silly things is all there is to complain about on this bike! I thought that was clear in my conclusion. This is an awesome machine!
shoulda got a Honda RX they have hydraulic clutch and more I have the 2020 crf 450r and my tank lasts a few hours
Sounds like a great bike, unfortunately I need the track abilities of the Yamaha F model.

Haha so true!
thorn’s a softie!
Do you think that spark arrestor really even works?
But the fly wheel
It's made to be raced! Not for trails. Do your research before you buy your next bike.
Bullshit, if you did you wouldn't make a video saying the crap that you are, why don't you know how far you can ride from 1 tank ???? Exactly 😁

Here in Canada you do not need a license to ride on a closed course track.
You don't need a license to ride an off road vehicle.
Nah bro wtf that’s a straight race bike.
Amazing how many people dont know the fastest bikes offroad are the pure motocross bikes. Go check out the pro starting line of your next hare scramble in your area.
whats the oil capacity? the wr 450 tank is bigger and fits in the frame!
Cheers
Ami the only one that didn’t see a fuel pump and choke?
Fuel pump is in the gas tank and there is no choke, only a high idle/cold start button.
@@westkrider1132 where is the high idle starter located? And I can’t see the fuel pump
On the throttle body at the front of the engine. Right behind the bottom of the rads.
@@westkrider1132 is it possible you could make a vid explaining all of this and showing all the steering wheel controls?
You bet. I plan to do a video on that yet.
What brand handgaurds are on your bike
I dont remember exactly. The plastic covers are Cycra but I cant remember who makes the kits. They were in stock at Kelowna Yamaha.
I have a 2016 yz250f how do I open the thing to get into the gas lol
Haha ya it can be tricky. If the front of your seat is the same as mine there are notches like finger holes on right and left. Place your fingers in either side and pop that cover off and the gas cap is right underneath. No tools required.
@@westkrider1132 Ye I just pulled it off super hard and it worked haha
A 2021 YZ450FX would have been perfect for you.
What about the sump plug angle and no spark arrestor and why hasn't it got a 10 ltr tank ... Exactly
Buy a wr or fx model
Get a WR instead
Are the graphics build into the plastics or would you be able to peel them off?
You can definitely peel them off.
westkrider Oh okay for some reason I thought the new YZ graphics were imbedded like the KTMs
Nope easily changeable with a little patience.
Awesome thanks! I’m waiting for the 2021 YZ250F to come out. And am going to order some graphics.
Enjoy your new ride! They are amazing!
450fx should be perfect
a YZ450F is in fact a MX bike, so to say most these bikes wont see an MX track is ignorant lol. Did you know what this bike was designed for?
How about the handlebar position?
There is so much flexibility in the handlebar position. I have it as far forward in the mounts as it will go because I am a pretty big guy. I am really happy with it.
@@westkrider1132 yeah I'm 6"2 and I had to move mine all the way forward and I feel like I want them further still, and if this were my list, the spark arrestor would be #1 or #2 with the chain being the other
Im 6’4” myself so I know what you mean. Once I moved the bars up I was happy with them.
Shoulda bought the x model
Thanks for watching the video! The X looks like a great bike and if all I did were trails then it would be perfect. The kickstand is not allowed on a motocross track and the 18” rear wheel is a proven competitive disadvantage for motocross. Also the heavier flywheel and undervalved suspension wouldnt work for me.
You bought the wrong bike amigo....this is not a trail bike
You didnt watch to the end or read my description if you think I bought the wrong bike my friend.
It isn't , really... refund, may he have one ... please
Where did you buy your skid plate
It is the works connection glide plate and I bought it through the Kelowna Yamaha parts desk.
No disrespect to what his skid plate is but the cycra one is a plastic composite which is less ridged. Also protects the water pump more.
Does the bike feel heavy on the track?
Not at all! I have ridden a lot of bikes over the years and this bike feels amazing. I have had it on hard packed chopped up tracks, smooth sandy tracks and single track rocky bush trails and have never found it does anything that I dont cause. It does exactly what you tell it to. And it does it well!
@@westkrider1132 Fantastic thank you !
You should have had your stunt double crawl all the way under there!
We couldnt agree on the fine print of the legal clauses so he quit on me!
Buy a aftermarket pipe.
That things beautiful dont care bout problems still going to but tomorrow
Congrats! Dont get me wrong these arent problem. These are 5 inconveniences that I have found. As I say at the end of the video they are petty and this is truly the best motocross bike made in my opinion. Enjoy your new ride!!
westkrider i just dont wanna blow it up
My experience has proved to me that Yamaha builds the most reliable bikes out there. You can ride this bike hard with no worries! Just do the proper servicing and maintenance and you will love it!
westkrider good
Feel free to message me with any questions. Happy to help! I absolutely love my bike and Im sure you will too!
Tank size is fine
No it's not, he can't go more than 2 klms from camp 😂🤣😭
your kidding right? you bought an mx bike. cable clutches are lighter and YZ works great. you needed to buy a WR.
how much did it cost?
Kelowna Yamaha gave me a great deal. I paid well below list price.
It’s a mx bike made for mx racing bud
As an experienced MX racer I understand completely. I used to race hare scrambles and there was a decent cross over between machines. All I had to do was change suspension settings to take the trail junk better and then a few clicks and I was back in MX mode. All I am saying is the few things I have suggested wouldnt affect anyone but the fastest pros on the MX track but it would add versatility to the machine for the average owner.
Красавец!!!!
Wow, sounds like you had a rough experience with one! What year was your last Yamaha? What level do you race at?
Most of the bikes aren't gonna hit the track.... Lol almost all of them are gonna hit the track. I have gotten a 47 Mile loop on my stock tank on my 2012. They sip fuel on trails
Sounds you need 2 bikes, cant have it be awesome both ways...
Ideally yes two bikes would be amazing! This bike truly is awesome both ways, I just needed something to complain about ;)
Western trail riding ? Should have got a ktm 300 xc.....murders that yamaha in the trails....i have both bikes, a 2014yz and a 2021 ktm 300xc, yamaha is meant for open plains or the track and will probably be collecting dust for the forseeable future.......tatatata 2 stroke !!!!!
I certainly wish I could afford multiple bikes. The best bike choice is always one of each!
You need two bikesss
its not a trail bike dude it was made for racing u just got the wrong bike my man xD
Exactly, .... can't ride more than 2 klms from camp because I'm scared... ppfftt
Dude, get yourself an oring chain and adjust it twice a year.
That is great advice. I typically do that right from new but I have been out of it so long I was curious if the stock chain technology had improved. I find the orings really wear out the chain guides fast though. Going to try the Renthal next.
What about the fly wheel
get a KTM, if u want a hydraulic clutch??
I didnt mind the KTM but the suspension definitely didnt measure up to the YZ for me and I find the KTM seem to have slower pull from the engine. When you are a bigger guy like me that makes a big difference. I just thought Yamaha should be puting something that is an easy upgrade on their bike. Both KTM and now Honda have it.
Do you want some wine with that cheese you bought the wrong motorcycle Yamaha didn't make a bike just for you should have bought a WR
So you are saying I could make better lap times with a wide ratio transmission, softer frame and suspension, heavier flywheel and kickstand? Doesnt make much sense to me. This bike is amazing!! Just sharing my least favourite things about the bike as the video states.
And I believe the saying is “Would you like some cheese with that whine”.......
Doesnt mean I cant complain about it ;)
@@westkrider1132 na but do you have a spark arrestor to go with the blue vein ...
my yz250 2019 came whit the same chain its garbage lol
Go ride Mx and see the complaints.
I have spent the last month and a half riding nothing but tracks. This bike is practically flawless which is why my least favorite things are not monumental just petty little quibbles. The bike is simply amazing!
Well learn how to ride it
ur only putting a spark arrester once and thats it 😂😂😂😂. who cares ab a damn spark arrester its not an oil change that you’d normally do every 2-4 rides. just put it in and ride
nvm HAHAHAHAHAHA that oil change bolt really hitten diff now 😂😂😂😂😂😂 i guess i was wrong ab the oil thing. i kinda commented early so i didnt see the drain plug
Remember these are “my” least favourite things. When there is very little to complain about the complaints will seem petty to some. This is an amazing bike overall and I would buy it again 100 times out of 100!
Buy a Ktm then!
The only solution the KTM offers is the hyd clutch. The KTM SX wouldnt solve any of my other issues. This Yamaha is the best bike I have ever owned hands down.
Hahaha it's a race bike
Do you race? Every racer I have hung around with has more practice and trail ride days then they do race days.
@@westkrider1132 there's not much trail riding where I live. So I'm pretty much at the track every weekend.
@@westkrider1132 yeah I totally understand, did you try KTM?
I did and I really liked it but I found they are just slightly slower revving than the Yamaha and not nearly the same suspension.
This guy 😂
Is a full blown wankerr 🤙🇦🇺
