Hey Sarah! I'm Abagail and I've just started yesterday as a New Grad RN in Australia. I am already so stressed out because I realised how little I know about everything. Will my critical thinking skills develop over my time at the hospital? I feel as though I'm not critically thinking so much at the moment because I am really trying to get into the groove of things
Hello Abagail, I started less than seven months ago as a new nurse and can only say it will get better with time. It took a while (still taking a while) to feel confident and critically think. I do make mistakes here and there but one thing that has helped me is being vocal about my strengths and weaknesses. If someone ask me do I need help, I will be honest and tell the truth that I need help. Don't let yourself drown in tasks, med passes, procedures, and etcetera if you know you are struggling. It helps if your unit is supportive which will make the learning experience even better. If you have a question or an inkling about something, ask for help. I do it constantly especially when I'm not sure. Critical thinking will take time and it is still something that even nurses with two years under their belts are still learning. All the best and just hang in there.

Taylor Bellsi hi taylor, I am a student nurse, as well. The way that my program is designed we have two days/week we are in theory and three days/week we are in clinical. On Wednesday we go to theory and then we had to the hospital where we select patients based (hopefully) on something we can apply our theory portion to (i.e if we are covering respiratory complications, try to select a patient with a respiratory disease). I am unsure how your program is designed and set up, if this is even possible for you, but I research out my patient in full the night before I work with them. I go over the medications in depth so that I can connect why my patient is taking the medication (because, as you've probably found, it's not always clear in the patients chart...esp if the patient is taking a medication more commonly used for diseases or disorders the patient doesn't have). This saves me a ton of time! If you're unable to do patient prep ahead of time, try to bear through it and work on time management. I have found that as I've become more familiar with medications, through exposure to them, it's gotten easier for me to figure out why a patient is taking it. Best of luck!
This comes with time, ask coworkers what common medications are on the unit you work, research them. The more you research the more you know. You will eventually get to know the most common meds..and it will take less time to research. Good luck!

For anyone else reading this that is just graduating or starting a new job as an RN, I recommend taking it day by day and take every learning opportunity that is available! Try to limit the self doubt as much as possible, because that factors into the care your giving. :)

They oversee alot of things They don't want to care about the patient in a holistic way. They consider their job as any other office job. "I am here for the Damn money only." Choose your first job well. Aim for highest acuity because you can go high to low easier than low to high acuity.
