- Days after San Francisco officials put work to shore up San Francisco’s leaning Millennium Tower on indefinite hold, there’s new evidence that building officials were forewarned about the dangers of the planned fix. Max Darrow reports (9-16-21)
Japan has developed a process of removing old skyscrapers floor by floor without explosives. Time to give them a call.

@@liamsmith6102 @Jude74 @Dell Dorado they’ve done this *once* in NYC, to the 52 floor 270 Park Avenue Office Tower. It took 2 years, 2019-2021, to take all the floors down. This building in SF is considerably taller.
@@mickfunny4185 great clarification. Architects do provide deconstruction documents so it can be done. Every piece comes together, it can come apart 😎 a lengthy but ethical way to discard / up cycle material.

I jacked a corner of a 28x20 ft 1 level house with 4 ton hydraulic car jack once to level it. It went off without a hitch.😁👍
They need to call in so NYC experts on this. NYC design firms are the gold standard for skyscraper structural engineering throughout the world. It is concerning that she compared this building to a single family home.

I think the problem is cracked pipes, gas and water leaks, dysfunctional elevators, broken windows, etc. Something that large might also become structurally unsound. Imagine if, after everything that's happened and everyone knowing what's happened, a small piece of the exterior cracks off one day and kills someone.
@@yehtoon4237 Another problem is sewage flow. Ideal sewage flow occurs when pipes drop 1/4 inch vertically for every 1 foot traveled horizontally. If the angle of the pipes change sufficiently, sewage will begin pooling in pipes rather than flowing. Not....ideal.

The SEA engineer cites the process as validation for the fix but she can't account for the results. She can't account for the fact that the fix caused more damage.

I dont understand why they wouldnt invest a little more time and money to do that. After all these are luxury apartment buildings being sold to wealthy people, they were always going to make their money back.

I would agree I am not an engineer however if the foundation was unstable to begin with when it was laid, and planning to drive long piles into bedrock on the leaning side, to stabilize it. Is that going to make the other side fall into already weakened foundation that is not bedrock?

@@OOpSjm maybe. I'm not an engineer but I'd imagine constructing/reinforcing a house vs a high-rise building is such a different beast as to make comparing the two almost laughable. And yet she did so, with the same sort of lack of humility that the original engineer displayed. At least that was my perception.
I'm not sure about her engineering creds after the house comment, but we need to forgiving and allow for the new world order...menstruating persons, birthing persons, men can have cervices too, and I hear schools are doing away with F's due to racism...that'll be so helpful for future engineers.

After the Earthquake in 1990, why would anyone risk a high rise that is sinking, leaning, has a major construction defect, and leaning 22 inches ??? If that building topples, it will take out surrounding buildings as well.

I've worked in construction, I've done emergency repairs involving underpinning, though not on the scale of a skyscraper. You always balance the repairs. I did one one a semi detached house where one side was ok and the other washing away. It was challenging reinforcing of the common wall was necessary as part of the repair and the house was not in an earthquake zone. Good luck with the repair.

Skyscrapers displace a hell of a lot more ground water than houses. You don't need to be an engineer to understand that. You're basically telling people that it's okay to fix your car with hot glue because you did it on one of your Hot Wheels cars once.

Not a good idea to model what needs to be done on what works for houses, as Guglielmo seems to suggest. If a house falls down, it is not nearly as catastrophic and may not even cost lives.
How does it affect the surrounding buildings at this time. Are the surrounding buildings also at risk for collapsing?

The level of scrutiny has been proven to be lacking when this project was built with its foundation piles not going down to bedrock...

Egotistical experts, unwilling to listen to other experts. What they say about engineers is true. They all think they are God. Which wouldn't be so much of an issue if they all didn't also have deeply held beliefs in monotheism. The officials are asking for the best people, but you can never get that in engineering. If you ask 4 luminaries, you will get 4 different plans. Then each of them will tell you why the other three plans won't work. That's consulting engineers in a nutshell.
It will only take a small to moderate quake to increase the tilt to the point where the necessity of condemning the building will be beyond debate.
