    Just to point out, if you need to sell a bunch of cards, don't go to the market page. Instead go to the badge page and click on the card's game badge entry. On there there's an option saying "sell these on the market". From there, you can bulk list the cards all at one price.

    You're actually helping Valve make money with this, money comes from whoever buys these trading cards, steam gets a small amount for each transaction, you get cards by spending money, then that money is refunded but the cards remain, then someone spends their money for these made up cards and valve will get a small amount from it. • @arthurclery5731
    @arthurclery5731 ปีที่แล้ว +115

    I have a slightly different perspective on this "exploit." When we buy games during the summer sale, we earn virtual steam trading cards that cost nothing for Valve to make. Now, here's the interesting part: when people purchase these trading cards on the community market, they're actually putting money into Steam and paying Valve's market tax. Then, the money we receive from selling those cards is reinvested in the Steam store on other games. So, it's not really taking money away from Steam, but rather creating a cycle that brings in more money overall. It's an intriguing aspect of the system that benefits the platform itself, so honestly, they don’t even really have a need to patch it.
    You’re essentially just doing labour for people who want to level up their steam account with trading cards and Valve is profiting all the way.

    • @Lars_Hermsen
      @Lars_Hermsen ปีที่แล้ว

      it's probably in a legal gray area/just straight up illegal. As you said, steam is facilitating the generation of money and profiting off of it, so it's essentially just printing money for itself. With exploits like this, you're essentially generating nothing out of thin air and selling that nothing, which steam takes 2 cents from. So, if valve lets this continue while knowing about this issue, they're essentially printing money, which is illegal iirc. It may be beneficial for them, but it's probably legally very sketchy.

    • @Vysair
      @Vysair ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I just remembered that you can buy a hardware on steam like their Deck and VR

    • @its_fabled
      @its_fabled ปีที่แล้ว +9

      This may not be entirely true. The practice lowers the value of the trading cards when done in an excessive way. This doesn't directly damage the revenue of Valve because their share for each transaction is already at the lowest possible amount (0.02€) for the event cards. But you can also generate Steam gems by destroying the cards. So, the price for sacks of Steam gems on the market would go down and for this transactions, the Valve share for each transaction is >0.02€. So it could go down to 0.02€ which could damage the revenues for Valve.
      I know, probably just peanuts in the end and maybe people would start to buy more gems but yeah, this just crossed my mind.

      @@its_fabled The value per transaction will decrease, but bear in mind this only happens because the number of transactions increases, so the number of dollars flowing into the steam economy increases. When a card is created, value is created. This value does not come from Valve, but from the buyer who decides to exchange their IRL cash into Steam dollars, at which point Valve profits.

      Which is how it works for normal trading cards. You have to actually play the games to get game specific cards and until your account has achieved a trusted state you won't get cards until you've played more than 2 hours.
      Event cards like this are the only ones you can still exploit like this. It used to be possible to do it with all of them, but they fixed that half a decade ago when they also removed free games from having trading cards because those were also being mass exploited by burner accounts.

    Efficiency trick: when you have multiple trading cades from a specific title (anything that you can combine to get an emote/wallpaper/badge)
    instead of selling each one individually, you can click "View Badge progress" and in that menu there is an option to "Sell these cards on the Market" which gives you a separate interface showing you for each card: Quantity to sell (pre-populated with "quantity owned" value), quantity 'owned', name (with picture), and most importantly 2 text boxes similar to the sell individually window,("You Recieve" and "Buyer Pays") but pre-populated with the highest current "Buy Order"
    meaning you only need to enter the target price once for each card, and agree to the subscribe agreement once for listing all of them at once.
    taking a few hours of manually going through the process individually for each card especially at 100+ cards, down to a few seconds for each "title"

      It's basically a ''Rich get richer'' style thing, you need a ton of capital as your earning potential increases the more capital you dump into it, and it only takes money from other Steam users, giving you AND Steam income (Remember, Steam gets a cut out of every trading card sold).

    This somehow reminds me of people on my local classifieds who would claim to have cheap Nintendo Switch games, but would mask the fact that they were selling hacked and/or compromised Nintendo accounts as selling accounts is against the ToS for that account system.
    From what I can tell, someone on the same website got their console permanently banned from online features for logging into one of those sold accounts, and the seller forced them to leave positive feedback before they could get the credentials to the account. I'm glad I avoided such scams.
    As far as I know, Nintendo do have measures in place to detect unusual account activity, like which users signed in on which consoles in which locations, as well as if too many consoles try to sign in to the same account, and if the primary console on one account kept changing.
    As such, I think Valve have measures to detect abuse of Steam refunds and may be able to ban Steam accounts if users keep abusing their refund system.

      There's actually nothing really ''illegal'' about it though? 🤔
      Technically he's printing trading cards, flooding the trading card market with his printed cards, all while providing Steam with a cut of the of profits. I don't even think you can call it fraud since Steam cards have no ''This is an authetic trading card!'' thing... Maaaaybe market manipulation, IF you stretch the definition of 'the market' to include Steam's trading card marketplace... Though not likely since the laws refer to the stock market.
      The worst thing that can happen would be that Steam's lawyers would be sweating and telling Steam to stop him since there's some small potential that enough users buying the ''printed cards'' and complaining might be able to scratch Steam's reputation. 🤔

    I have little of value to say that others have not said already. Neat as this is, I would hate for Steam to use this as an excuse to take away the ability to refund a game or add all sorts of hoopla to the process. Anti-consumer actions by companies in almost every industry are so common now that even the simple ability to return something within given specific parameters feels like some kind of blessing. It's sad that this is where we are, but I'm thankful for what little is still allocated to us as consumers.

  • @axelprino
    @axelprino ปีที่แล้ว +9

    This feature has existed for years now, if you refund too frequently they'll simply deny your refunds, there's a reason why this is still a thing.
    Also, the summer cards are literally generated from thin air for doing stuff like going through the discovery queue or crafting badges, Valve is profiting from this by taking a bite of every card sold. All you're doing is redirect money from the users buying the cards to your account.
    I kinda hate you for helping crash those cards' value faster than usual tho, I was wondering why the price suddenly tanked last night.
