    I showed this to my Mum who doesn't understand english! She love the video so much and it was always so nice to see her laugh so hard. She like to watch other videos as well but she couldn't understand.
    It would really be great to continue to put CHINESE SUBTITLES for the rest of the elderly to understand better. We may not notice but a lot of older people likes to know what we young generation up too.

      there have been alot of stereotypes for the word banana to describe even asians overseas, even the local chinese educated seem to think they are mostly only english educated or brought up in a english speaking family, i would say people have studied though different types of schools locally or abroad and still receive the similar stereotype view which is ridiculous

    Sometimes i think the term banana is offensive.
    I've got a friend who's a Sabahan and she spoke English, sabahan, mandarin, hakka and little mandarin. She knows hakka coz her family speaks hakka and personally i find hakka is beautiful. She didn't go to all chinese school so can't write chinese. She can only write it in pinyin.
    She had a friend who spoke mandarin (no other dialect if I'm not mistaken). Her friend called her a banana because some of her pronunciation wasn't right and she can't write in chinese. She was kinda offended that her close friend called her a banana. Just feel like letting that out of my chest.
    Nice video btw. Awesome. Wo shi malai ren. Xianzai wo xue zhong wen. Dui bu qi, wo de zhong wen bu hao. Xie xie.

    • @VicenteChenHolaatodos
      @VicenteChenHolaatodos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to know the meaning of "banana", but now I'm not so sure if your friend been called as a "banana" is appropriate, cause she can still speak Hakka, which is one of a dialect of Chinese. So does your friend can still be called banana in this way? Not so sure lah...... :(
      I'm Taiwanese, and a half Hakka :) Just came back from Malaysia for less than two weeks. Miss almost everything there pretty much... :)

    • @sabahbubbler
      @sabahbubbler 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think she shouldn't because she can speak hakka in my opinion. She just can't write in chinese and her mandarin is a bit weaker because its not her main language. Her friend probably teased her by calling her banana because her mandarin pronunciation wasn't good

    • @sabahbubbler
      @sabahbubbler 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm very new to the chinese language. I'd like to ask, why is the title called struggles of a banana but the chinese is written as "banana person". Shouldn't it be "xiangjiao de struggles"?

    • @VicenteChenHolaatodos
      @VicenteChenHolaatodos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      gula-gula getah sabah actually... yes, these two meaning are different, but it's not because they want to translate the whole thing, instead only the "banana" word. Also there's no need to translate each word to each word like "xiangjiao ren". Banana = 香蕉人, that's the main idea they wanna share, in my opinion :)

    As a Chinese Indonesian, Im curious why Malaysia has banana? i mean, unlike us, you guys are awesome with your education and multilingual environment. Is being a banana considered higher in social status or you simply dont have the chance to learn it? when i went to malaysia, seemed like everyone speak Chinese, i really dont get it
    I do speak Chinese which i learned since very young, but very few of my friends speak the language even though almost every one of them ever learned it in their lifetime(perhaps because no one use it in daily conversation, some give up after learning for several years). Luckily now there are chinese schools in every city here and our young generation learn the language once was banned by government. Maybe it takes several generation to resurrect the language again but we do really appreciate it.
    I hope being banana is not sth people proud of, because it is shameful to not understand our ancestor s language. It is human nature to less appreciate things we take for granted. I do hope my people can speak chinese again (not to understate english, it is a must!)

    • @yongling9825

    • @sr3821
      @sr3821 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why is it shameful to not speak the ancestors' language? If your first forefathers came from Africa (that is what I heard according to science), would you learn African language? Language is first and foremost a tool. It is good to have more language capability, but if you don't, it is OK as long as you can communicate in daily life.

      You are a Malaysian and not mainland Chinese. So I don't see why you should be obligated to speak Mandarin. If they're gonna tell you that yes it is true that you are Malaysian but you are of Chinese decent so you must speak Mandarin, then ask them why are there still Chinese born citizens of American, European and South East Asian countries who still can't speak Mandarin. Ask them why African Americans can't speak their native language. If they are so proud of their Chinese pride, ask them why are they still living and working in Malaysia instead of migrating to China.

    • @goldkwi
      @goldkwi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@studswat87 This dosen't make sense. There is a Chinese Idiom going by the four words "饮水思源“. Figuratively translated, it tells one to remember his roots. And by that, are you going to throw away your origins (being Oriental Chinese)? In Singapore, where most of us speak English, I still feel a obligation to speak Mandarin or at least understand it. The same applies to the Chinese Dialects (or Languages in my opinion). What more, in Malaysia, where a larger majority speaks a form of Chinese Language. Signboards are in Mandarin. You order food in Mandarin. You can't escape it.

    • @goldkwi
      @goldkwi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it turns me off Ian, because you are racially Chinese. it's in your blood. If i'm given a opportunity to master my mother tongue, I would. Malaysia is that place for opportunity. You didn't seize that opportunity ! Glad in Singapore most youth aren't Bananas. Mother Tongue is compulsory. At least be able to understand and order food from the kopitiam You can't escape it.

    • @studswat87
      @studswat87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@goldkwi The world does not revolve around your Chinese idiom though. Remembering your roots does not require you to practice it if you choose not to. You may remember and know it but who says you need to practice them? Which law said that you are required to practice them?
      By the way, where did you get your information stating that the majority in Malaysia speaks Mandarin and most of the signboards are in Mandarin? Clearly, you've never been there. Malaysia is a Muslim majority country and the signboards are mostly in Malay. Chinese Malaysians there are a minority.

    • @JYYew
      @JYYew 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Cantonese is a chinese dialect.
      What people (mostly chinese people) often refer to chinese is mandarin. So technically all the dialects can be called chinese, and most people in the west will also just think of any dialect as chinese.

    • @stanley4583
      @stanley4583 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JY Yew Wrong, it is politically correct to call Cantonese dialect of Mandarin. Chinese is not a langauge but rather a group of sinitic languages. A group of languages that can separate to 9 branches including Hokkien itself, Cantonese, Hakka, Wu and etc. When people say 'chinese' they usually mean Mandarin from Northern Chinese which base on Beijing dialect. Look at the map of Europe and then look back to China. Saying that Cantonese is a dialect is like saying Portuguese is a dialect of French. Cantonese itself isn't a dialect of any other Chinese language but itself have dialects. Same goes to Hokkien. For example, Teowchew, Amoy(Xiamen) and Zhangzhou is dialects of Hokkien(Min language group).

    • @stanley4583
      @stanley4583 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why does it matters? Because if we group all Chinese languages as dialects, it will give mandarin an opportunity to be the 'only legit' Chinese language that is formal and writable, and other Chinese language will seems to be appear 'vulgar', 'old-fashioned', 'ugly' etc. Since China is now a uniform country and it is huge and densly populated, Mandarin is chosen to be the national language of China and a tool to 'unify' Chinese. Therefore, the rest of chinese languages are degraded as 'dialects' and government has been promoting speak mandarin campaign to eliminate other language group's culture. 'Dialects' were banned in school and within 50 years of effort, most of the youngsters nowadays are either can't speak, or not willing to speak their mother-tongues anymore. An evil conspiracy hidden for us to debunk. Some mandarin chauvinists discriminate other dialect groups by saying their language is not a true 'chinese' language since they pronounce things different and they are vernacular (cannot be written).
