    Just want to agree with Kieran: what distinguishes your videos is their comprehensiveness. So many videos jump over all the details. Some of us want to master everything, even if it takes much more time.

    I am a complete newbie to TrueNAS. You are by far the best source I have found to educate me about this remarkable software. Many thanks - I will support you in whatever way I can...

    I am so tired of people creating tutorial videos on technical topics then rather than actually explaining as you would in a tutorial they skim over everything they don't understand basically making the entire video worthless and clickbait. It was nice to finally find a creator that goes over each option even if it's not something they are using but it's specifically why I would want to watch a video on a technical topic. Thank you for the effort you put into this it's helped my journey in learning the TrueNAS environment. Sorry for the rant and again thank you for the content!

    Not many youtubers have covered the new versions of TrueNas core , Would really appreciate if you could create a video explaining, pools and jails on the new version. thank you. Great video

    Great video Blackbeard. So many TrueNas videos breeze over the options without explaining them properly. Is there any chance you would do a comprehensive video explaining TrueNas ACLs? None of the other YT Tutorials explain them properly and they are dam confusing. For example what does "Traverse" mean? What is the "Wheel" group and why does it exist? How do I set a user or group to have read only access to a share? What are the implications of enabling encryption? Is there a performance hit? What to do if a Raidz disk fails - now that would be a killer tutorial that no one else has done. In the meantime, just found you so I'm subscribed. Well done and best of luck with the channel.

      BTW you need to up the audio levels.

    • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kieran,
      Thanks for the comment, and appreciate the support. I completely agree on the audio level side. I've taken some steps to improve that and bought a better audio mixer. In my workflow I film a number of videos at once, so you'll probably find there's going to be a few more videos where the volume is lower than I would like, but the ones I'm filming at the minute I'll be paying more attention to getting that balance right.
      Glad you're enjoying the content, and I'll take some of those questions on board an hopefully cover them in future videos. Over time I hope to cover absolutely everything you could want to know in Truenas. Just so you're not kept waiting though, here's at least a few answers for you:
      1) I've never dug too far into the traverse permission, but I believe it allows you to pass through a protected folder to access a folder you do have permissions for. For example, you might have a user who should not have access to the folder 'Protected', but should have access to the child folder 'Accessible'. This permission would allow them to reach /protected/accessible, without giving them access to the /protected file path. I'll have to play around with that one myself and confirm if there's any other quirks, but that's my understanding at this time.
      2) The 'wheel' group allows users to elevate their own permissions using the sudo (or 'su') command. If you are not a member of this group, you cannot use sudo/su by default. Why it's called wheel and a touch of the history behind it is something I would have to look into, but could be an interesting topic for a future video.
      3) In the Truenas menu, select 'Storage -> Pools -> Click the 3 dots next to the pool you'd like to set the permissions on -> 'Edit Permissions'. Here you can scroll down the page and on the bottom right click 'Add an ACL item'. In the box that appears you can set the user or group you want to set permissions for. Under 'Permissions', you should be able to set it to 'Read'. I have a video scheduled for December that walks through creating windows shares, and setting ACL permissions. I don't set the permissions to 'Read' in the video, but we do talk generally about the area you would define those permissions, so make sure your still subscribed for that.
      4) Good question! It can vary by workload, disks layout, hardware and several other factors. I've never had a big issue with the performance overhead from encryption, but I'm a casual user. In a business or multi user environment with heavy use, the overhead might add latency you deem unacceptable. I think there's an element of personal preference to this, but I generally like to ensure my critical data is encrypted regardless of performance overhead.
      5) It's on my list, so I'll be looking at doing something like that in the new year (I hope).

    Hello, Thank You for the Video.
    Is it possible to create a master/admin user that can: read, write and execute to all other files and folders.
    I want to create credentials for such a user for my IT guy so he can manage all othe units using the storage?

    • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you absolutely can! You can give as wide or as narrow privilege as you like when you create the user.

    • @IBrandTV-M
      @IBrandTV-M 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BlackbeardSupport Okay, but the major question is how can I achieve that please, I'm new to TrueNAS..my units can access thier respective folders from the "Z: Drive" of their systems using the respective credentials. No user can make chnages to the other units folder - that I have set up, but
      I want a user to be able to delete and edit files from any of the unit's folder while accessing it from the "Z: Drive" - Like and Admin for the storage system.
      Thanks

    • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IBrandTV-M Hey! It sounds a little bit like you might have multiple pools, and *each* pool has their own permission set, so you'll have to do this for every pool, but it's essentially:
      1) Go to Storage -> Pools -> Pick the pool you want to apply the permission to and select the three dots icon-> Edit permissions.
      2) For every user/group you want as an admin, set 'ACL Type' to 'Allow' and permissions to 'Full Control'.
      3) At the bottom, hit 'apply permissions recursively' and 'Apply permissions to child datasets'.
      That should allow them to make changes anywhere, to any folder.

      Hey Andrew, Thanks for the comment. I agree, for this video especially the sound is more muffled than I like. I've since gotten a new input mixer, so my newer videos will hopefully sound a lot clearer to you.

    Hi. I can create users, i can create groups. Add users to a group. But now i want to add a group to a group. is this possible? Let's say i have 20 users in group A. In group B there are 10 users. The users from group A need access to Group B. It would be nice if i could add group A to Group B.

    One of the better video's but if setting up users generally you would want a home directory? Looking for this for my kids etc :)

    • @BlackbeardSupport
      @BlackbeardSupport  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a bit of a love hate relationship with Home Directory's, especially in TrueNAS. They never seem to just work the way you'd expect, and they're a bit annoying to get set up correctly. I spend more time wrestling with them than I'd like.
      If you have a lot of users who need their own share it's a must, but for a small group like a family I tend to just set up a dataset for each person and update the ACL rules so each user only has access to their own dataset. It's a bit tedious to start, but I find it allows you to more easily audit what is in each dataset, and there are some other advantages such as being able to set per dataset rules for encryption and backups and so on.
      If you have anything more than maybe 5 users though, the effort involved in setting up individual datasets is too much and home directories are (unfortunately) the way to go.
      Slight Edit: I've put home shares on my list of things to wrestle with and put together a good guide on how to get it working "right". Unfortunately it will be a few weeks before I get around to tackling it properly.
