    I love the tip about using a project bag to remember decreases. It has also never occurred to me to place a marker halfway when casting on. Thanks for sharing these!

    Socks are my go to project for my ‘waiting room’ bag, in which I keep my project in project bag kit much like you. For stretch I use old German (sometimes called old Norwegian) cast on. I have homemade stitch markers from yarn. Very easy to glide across the needles. I place one every 20 sts when I cast on. They get removed a few rows in. Because I have so many after I get going different colors of these homemade markers will be designated for important points of shaping or pattern changes. I work socks cuff down. Every 20 rows I place a lightbulb pin to keep track of how tall to make the other cuff. I use the Chiaogoo mini tips with a really long cord (37 inches I think) so that I can magic loop. This allows me to keep the instep on the cord while I use the tips to work the heel flap. From here the end of round shifts to the center back heel and I keep the work in a triangle through instep, which helps me visualize shaping. Depending on the stitch pattern I may or may not keep the end of round at the bottom the instep through the foot. (If it’s plain stockinette it won’t matter and it will be easier not to) I will use light bulb pins to count the rows from the last instep decrease to the toe shaping, however. One other thing I do is that I made up a work sheet years ago of my preferred toe shaping and heel instructions. I fold up a copy and tuck it in a pocket of each project bag for quick reference on the go. This was something I worked up before smart phones and I’m just not in the habit turning to my phone for that. My old eyes probably couldn’t see it anyway, lol.

    Thank you! I’ve made many pairs of socks and have several of the issues you addressed. Such good ideas. Thank you and Jenny. I do the Shadow Wrap Heel (Earth Tones Girl) so I don’t have to mess with all the decreases. I hope you’re over your (September) bug and congratulations on your fair ribbons.

      @@DogMomKnits , my first thought, I have a one of my dad’s shirts, and he has now passed away, was, “Oh, I could send him the shirt and he could make me a project bag, and my dad would always be before me, helping me, as he always did.”

    You can also get a stretchy cast on with the German twisted cast on, and the slip knot is eliminated.

    • @DogMomKnits
      @DogMomKnits  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I didn't have success with the German Twisted Cast On. For me it was too tight and wouldn't go over my heel. I'm not sure what I do wrong, but I cannot get that one to work.

    You are my “less math is better” soul sister! I can spell any number, I just can’t add or subtract them! Love your tips! I do something similar for identifying the beginning of the slip stitch heel, leg and toe decreases. I use only the rose gold Crazy Sock Lady light bulb markers for rows of 10, and three colored light bulb markers for the beginning of the slip stitches, leg and toe.

    I color code my lightbulb markers and use them to keep up with k rows =silver. decrease rows =black. I know I have lots of markers. But that is how I keep up when knitting Celtic plait cable sweaters.

    I am not sure I totally understand the sock ruler. How do you know each person's size? I am a size 8 or 8 1/2, depending on shoe width. Or do you measure from heel to toe for each person?
    I have a high instep, so I do 18 rows for heel flap (then do heel turn) and pick up 19 for each gusset.

    • @DogMomKnits
      @DogMomKnits  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are very welcome!
      There are websites that will show the conversion of shoe size to inches, but if the person is with you, they can stand on the ruler, and you can see their measurement.
      That is correct regarding the number of stitches for the gusset.

    I’m not an English teacher but I always wonder why folks don’t say I knitted instead of I knit when they are speaking about past tense. I’m certain you can address this since you are an English teacher. I noticed you did the same thing.

    • @DogMomKnits
      @DogMomKnits  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had to look it up because I wasn't sure but I found that "knit" is a past, present, and future tense verb. "Knitted" is also grammatically correct in English. I think because the people I am around say "knit" as past tense, that is what I say. 🙂
      Thank you for watching and helping me learn something new. 💜

      I always wondered this but in reverse.
      I grew hearing knit used as an irregular verb. Last week I knit a sweater. Today I hear younger people saying knitted. Last week I knotted a sweater. The evolution of the English language 🥰

    Drea English teacher, “fewer”, not “less”. When you’re talking about individual units.
    And…”if I were to”, not “if I was to”. Subjunctive mood.
    “I’m not somebody who…”; as opposed to “I’m not somebody that…”.
